One less recruit
This morning the Counter-recruitment demonstration for buses arriving at the Military Entrance Processing Station, 3870 Rosin Ct, #105, in Sacramento, California celebrated when a mother and her daughter changed their mind and left before the young girl was administered the oath or signed the eight-year contract for military service.
Obviously nervous and a bit embarrassed, the recruit and her mother did not take questions or converse with the cheering protestors, but they were smiling as they waved and shared the two-finger 'V' salute for peace as they sped away.
My reaction when I first saw the recruits getting off the bus in the pre-dawn darkness in front of the well-hidden Processing Station was that none of them seemed old enough to be signing up for military service. These recruits looked like a group of kids going to an amusement park or the State fair. It seemed like there were a lot of girls, maybe even half, or maybe it was just that the boys had not even finished puberty and still had child's faces. One clearly disillusioned youngster gleefully exclaimed, "We're going off to war!" as if he was going to a football game or something. Probably following instructions given to them on the bus, most hung their heads as they hurried to get their bag from the bowels of the bus and enter the building without looking any of us in the eye.
I have decided that Congress must pass a law that requires every recruit's mother to accompany him or her on this crucial day when they hand over their lives to the government for eight years. There should also be a 72-hour 'cooling off' period when recruits can change their mind, without fear of reprisal, just like car buyers have.
Meanwhile, I have adjusted my sleeping schedule so that I wake up in time to ride my bike over to join the demonstration by 4:30 A.M. from Monday through Thursday. Crazy, you say? It turns out this is a swell deal for me, since during my ride the road is mostly clear of the Weapons of Mass Destruction (WMD) that make bike riding so hazardous, which are safely put away in their garages and driveways, and the cool morning air is as clean as it is likely to get each day, until the WMD wake up and join the mad commute.
So for me, I get a nice 6-mile ride each way, plus I get to start my day doing something positive to resist the illegal ongoing war. I get to share my message of conservation as the pathway to peace and explain to others how we fuel the military industrial complex with jet air travel and the 201 million motor vehicles that are ruining our water, air, land and lives. Part of my demonstration is my bike, and I use the flashing red light to draw attention to whatever sign I am holding while standing near it. Sometimes I ring the handlebar bell to attract attention too.
One child went home with her mother today and this lifted the spirits of the several passionate demonstrators. I hope it does the same for you. There is one less recruit for the wars today; wish us luck tomorrow!

You are a true hero! Thank you thank you for rising so early and making the case for true resistance and the cukture od possibility as opposed to destruction. I am proud toshare the planet with you!
Is it too much to hope that perhaps 10 others will join you tomorrow, and 10 more on the morning after that?
Keep up the good fight! Our message of non-violent resistance will take time, but it WILL slowly erode the NeoCons' warmongering indoctrination; the "tipping point" is already near...
On July 2, we mid-Pac Peace activists will also hold a Peace Festival of Resistance in Honolulu to educate the public, and we will have Tim Goodrich, founder of the GI War Resistance group, as a key speaker(plus 30+ community NGOs have signed up already to have literature tables and interactive games, all on the theme of creating alternatives to the Bushwhacked agenda.

I wish I lived in the Sacramento area Tim as I would join you early in the morning. Thank you so much for what you are doing.
My East Bay counter-recruiting group STIR (Supporting Truth in Recruiting) does what we can to educate kids to the lies recruiters tell kids and the dangers of military service (exposure to depleted uranium and experimental vaccines). We pass out brochures to high school kids and have gotten a lot of press. Recently the Contra Costa Times mentioned are efforts. Hopefully, the more we get out there the more we can make a difference.

On May 2, Sacramento Veterans for Peace, Chapter 87, and Operation Enduring Reality started a daily action (4:30 a.m.) at MEPS, Sacramento. On May 26 a press conference was called to announce the submission of a petition for a 72-hour cooling off period to the enlistment contract. Every weekday morning delivery of a newly signed copy of the petition is submitted. A Sergeant is now posted outside with a trashcan to deny VFP 87 & OER the right to petition for redress of grievance.
MEPS, San Jose, is located at 546 Vernon Avenue, Mountain View. Veterans and activists in the Bay Area are encouraged to join Sacramento VFP and OER to take action at your local MEPS.
VFP 87 and OER will gladly share any ideas and lessons learned.

sure we can use the extra efforts of the unemployable mentaly ill to increase our numbers but to we have to put up with all this crazy behavior. is it really worth it
I wish it was possible not to have to fight wars. But they have to be done. I have served proudly as a Marine and I am returning to military service as a National Guardsman. I joined of my own free will. Contrary to what you folks might think, we are able to make our own decisions at age 18. I am 28 now. I have a 5 year old son. I pray he decides to do something with his life besides the military. But if he chooses to go, I will let him. I love my country and am willing to protect it. Some do it with banners and signs, some do it with weapons. Why? Because there are bad people in the world wanting to do bad things. So while there may be one less female recruit for war, my best friend and I have decided to go back to protecting our country. Protecting your right to stand outside in the chilly morning and wave a banner showing your distaste for what we are doing. And no matter how wrong I think it is, I will continue protecting you. Wether or not you or your friends believe it. Semper Fidelis.
Sadly, it sounds like you really believe everything you just said. From a sociological standpoint, it is understandable. You have been indoctrinayed to this kinding of thinking and when this kind of message is repeated over and over, it's guaranteed that a good percentage will eventually grow to internalize/belive in these kind of ideals. The reality is that if you go to Iraq, you will not be fighting anything that could be remotely referred to as a 'just war' (or justifiable for that matter). This is a war, based on lies and a concerted propaganda campaign--see http://www.csmonitor.com/2003/0314/p02s01-woiq.html

note the signatures at the bottom--if you surf around this site--you will notice an errie/familiar ideology, set in place long before Bush-the lessor--was installed. The tragedy of 9-11 was exploited by these neo-conservatives to exploit this agenda.
Trusting your govt. is a dangerous place to be.
