IDF troops take over Palestinian family's home to watch soccer

by Haaretz
Israel Defense Forces soldiers barged into a Palestinian home and commandeered its television room so they could watch a soccer match, a military source said on Friday after a TV report on the incident.
Footage on Channel 10 TV showed broken furniture and windows in the room of the house in the West Bank city of Hebron where the television station said the troops watched Wednesday's Champions League final between AC Milan and Liverpool.

The Palestinian family living in the house said the soldiers caused the damage. The military source confirmed five soldiers entered the dwelling to view the match but said they stayed only for a few minutes and did not break anything.

Nonetheless, the source said, the commander of the squad had been suspended.

"The military takes a severe view of such incidents," the source added.

Palestinian teenager Anan al-Zrayer said he was walking down the street when soldiers asked him if his family had a television set and a satellite dish.

"I said 'yes,' and told them we don't have Israeli channels. (After they entered the house,) I gave them the remote control and they carried out a search. We were kicked into another room," he said.

Another Hebron resident said it was not the first time that soldiers had taken over Palestinian houses to watch television.

Khigaji al-Batch said about two weeks ago, 11 soldiers entered his home and stayed through the night.

"They are using our houses like a cinema," Batch said.

The commander of an Israeli Army unit has been suspended over allegations his soldiers barged into a Palestinian home so they could watch the final of the European Champions League soccer.

Palestinian teenager Anan al-Zrayer says he was walking down a street in Hebron when Israeli soldiers asked him if his family owned a TV set.

When he replied "yes", the soldiers went to his house and began watching the European Champions League soccer final between Liverpool and AC Milan.

The al-Zrayer family says the troops moved them into another room.

Family members say that when the solders left, they discovered their furniture had been smashed up.

An Israeli military source has told the Reuters news agency that the Army commander of the squad had been suspended.

"They entered the house and I gave them the remote control. We were kicked into another room."

An Israeli military source said the soldiers had been suspended pending an inquiry.

GAZA, Palestine, May25, 2005 (IPC)-- Amnesty International said on Wednesday that the Israeli occupation troops perpetrated war crimes against the Palestinian people, as more than 700 Palestinian residents including 150 children were killed last year, 2004.

In its annual report for the year 2004, issued today, the Amnesty asserted that most of those killed have been shot dead for no reason, during indiscriminate firing by Israeli troops from land and air and due to excessive use of force by these troops.

The report highlighted the demolition of hundreds of Palestinian-owned houses, as well as the use by the Israeli soldiers of Palestinian residents as ' human shields' during military operations.

Also, the report demonstrated the continued frequent Israeli armed settlers attacks on the Palestinian residents during 2004, particularly the assaults on local Palestinian farmers, in which such settlers used to bar harvest of crops.

In addition, the Amnesty outlined the main factors behind the failure of the road map alongside the resumption of Palestinain-Israeli violence.

Among such factors there have been the ongoing building of an Apartheid Wall in and through the West Bank, incursions into Palestinain cities, towns, villages and refugee camps, imposition of curfew on such areas as well as the extrajudicial assassinations, which have left many innocent Palestinians dead, the Amnesty numbered.

The 2004 report focused as well on the strangulating restrictions the Israeli troops have been placing on movement of the Palestinian population and security forces, leading to weakened Palestinian juridical system, as many reports indicated frequent Israeli troops attacks on Palestinain prisons.

The Amnesty concluded its figures by pointing out that the Israeli occupation authorities have denied access of many human rights organizations' staffs into its territories and restricted movement of such crews across the occupied Palestinian territories.

Most of you will be unaware of the humor in this story.

Both Israelis and Palestinians are great fans of "football". There was a major Israeli film centered around a captured Israeli soldier who had tickets to the world cup and how he and the band who captured him are making desperate attempts to get to see at least parts of games on television or at least listen on radio as they progress through Lebanon.

The commander of an Israeli army squad has been suspended after his patrol took over a Palestinian home and confined the family to a spare room so the soldiers could watch Liverpool's victory in the Champions League final.

A Palestinian youth, Anan al-Zrayer, told Israeli television that he was stopped in the West Bank town of Hebron by soldiers who asked if his family had satellite television.

After he confirmed that it did, he said the soldiers barged into the house, forced the family out of the living room and settled down to watch Wednesday's final between Liverpool and AC Milan. "I gave them the remote control and they carried out a search. We were kicked into another room," said Mr Zrayer.

Yesterday, an Israeli TV channel showed broken furniture and windows in the Zrayer home that the family said were damaged by troops.

The military confirmed that the five soldiers and the commander took over the house to watch the match but said they only stayed for a few minutes, and did not break anything. The only Palestinian at the house was the youth who let them in.

However, the army said such behaviour was unacceptable and was being investigated. "The commander in charge has been suspended from duty and further disciplinary measures will be taken against the soldiers."
