Start tapping those toes now for “Swing Into Spring,” the third annual swing dance benefit for the Lorenzo Theater Foundation, to be held on Saturday, May 21, 2005, 7 pm to midnight. Reflecting the Lorenzo Theatre’s 1947 opening, the event will once again have a unique 1940s ambiance as, through the generosity of Mather Aviation, it will be held in one of Mather’s airplane hangars at the Hayward Airport, 19990 Skywest Drive, Hayward.
Now in its third popular year, “Swing Into Spring” is a great evening for couples, singles, and groups of friends to get out and dance the night away. Live music from the 1940s by "Three O'Clock Jump," featuring the lead trumpeter and female vocalist from well-known local orchestra "Blast from the Past," will provide fabulous Big Band music for swing dancing. Top-rated exhibition dancers will present several numbers, and an array of vintage cars, planes, and 1940s memorabilia will be on display. Hors d’oeuvres, a no-host bar, and a raffle of several exciting prizes will round out the evening, which raises funds to help save the vintage Lorenzo Theatre in San Lorenzo.
"At last year’s event, people were already asking us to do it again this year," said Nancy Shelvy, president of the board of the Lorenzo Theater Foundation. "We’re looking forward to a wonderful evening with hundreds of people out on the dance floor in support of the Lorenzo Theatre. Anyone who enjoys swing dancing, the 1940s era, or—especially—wants to see the Lorenzo Theatre restored to its former glory should make sure they don’t miss Swing Into Spring 2005.”
The Lorenzo Theater Foundation Inc. is a non-profit organization dedicated to preserving and restoring the historic Lorenzo Theatre in San Lorenzo. The Lorenzo Theatre, built in 1947, is an Art Deco gem which has sadly fallen into disrepair since it closed its doors in 1982. Due to the efforts of the Lorenzo Theater Foundation, the Theatre was named a California Historic Resource in 2001. In September of 2002 the Lorenzo was designated an Historical Preservation (HP) District by the Alameda County Board of Supervisors.
“Swing Into Spring” is generously sponsored by local businesses including Arroyo Veterinary Clinic; Bohannon Foundation; Bonanza Realty; Civic Partners; Ellie Mae, Inc.; Hayward Area Historical Society; Hesperian Cleaners; Supervisor Alice Lai-Bitker; Supervisor Nate Miley and Vickie Perreira, First California Title.
