The Commonwealth Club Silicon Valley Presents:
"Finding the News We Need: In the Age of Spin" with
Martin Turner, Bureau Chief for the Americas, BBC
Jim Sanders, News director, NBC 11
Andrea Kissack, Producer, KQED Radio
Fifty years ago, news was the province of three network newsrooms, a handful of radio broadcasters and established newspapers and magazines. Today, the advent of 500 cable and satellite stations as well as hundreds if not thousands of Internet sites has dramatically increased the quantity of news we receive but what has happened to the quality? Are we entering a new era of news producing and consuming? Facts are facts but which facts are selected for presentation? And how are they verified? Does the consumer care about facts? How should the news industry respond to consumer needs in this vastly different media landscape?
