This information is crucial for building our case!
The Story:
On June 8th 2004 at the end of the Reclaim the Commons biotech protest, over one hundred activists were corralled in a mass arrest during a Reclaim the Streets against the G8 meeting in Georgia. Thirty-Eight of the activists arrested chose to withhold their names in continuing protest against their illegal arrest and violation of their First Amendment rights, amongst other things. The sheriff’s department attempted to break their solidarity by violently extracting them from their cells and subjecting them to pain compliance which resulted in serious injuries ranging from broken bones, nerve damage, and torn ligaments to bruises and psychological trauma. Their charges were ultimately dismissed “in the interest of justice.”
The Struggle:
The activists and their legal counsel have met deadlock in the information discovery process. The sheriff’s department refuses to disclose pertinent documents and video that are crucial in building a case. Although a sparse number of documents have been revealed, the sheriff maintains that the video and other documents requested are not public information. Even after a Sunshine Taskforce hearing unanimously found the sheriff in violation of the Sunshine Ordinance, which is meant to insure transparent government, the sheriff refuses to release pertinent video and documents.
