SF Bar Exploits Native Remains (photos)

by Native Soliidarity Activists
These are photos from the SF bar mentioned last week by Ward Churchill
outside2-sm.jpg
Those who heard Ward Churchill's speeches last week will know of a San Francisco bar that displays various memorabilia including photos, Custer's guns, and teeth taken from a Native woman referred to as Custer's "Live-In Squaw."

Included here are several photos from the bar & restaurant -called Capt. Eddie Rickenbacker's - located in SF's financial district.

Read the pictured note, which explains that one of the woman's teeth was knocked out by Custer in a "jealous pique."

The bar's owner, when questioned about why he has a Native woman's teeth on display, replied that concern for cultural sensitivity was "not living in reality."

The fact that Rickenbacker's has been voted one of the city's best bars illustrates that the "Little Eichman" mentality pointed out by Churchill after 9/11 remains prevalent, even in a "liberal" city such as SF.

Unfortunately, the existence of this display presents us with an opportunity to demonstrate real solidarity with Native Americans, and to point out the connections between the occupation of native lands in America and occupations taking place throughout the world today.

This museum would be a good resting spot for her teeth - which are actually a type of bone. http://www.ok-history.mus.ok.us/mus-sites/masnum03.htm
Maybe someone could ask the owner if he'll send the teeth back there. The guns and even those posters are okay, because it's important to remember the symbols of what things were like then rather than assuming things have always been like in the present. It is creepy to show her teeth like that though.

Looking at these pictures made me want to vomit. And now that people have confirmed that what Professor Churchill said as true, a question remains: What are we going to do about it? If anybody wants †ø plan some open action about this, wrrite me or post it here..

Not much web stuff out there on this woman unless her name can be spelled differently. Here is a paragraph:

Perhaps the most infamous officer-Indian sexual relationship was the rumored affair between Lt. Col. George Armstrong Custer (1839-1876) and a Cheyenne woman named Monasetah. Retired Cpt. Frederick Benteen of the 7th Cavalry, who despised Custer, claimed that, following the Battle of Washita, Custer invited officers "desiring to avail themselves of the services of a captured squaw to come to the squaw Round Up Corral, and select one!" Custer, Benteen charged, took first choice, Monasetah, and lived with her during the winter and spring of 1868 and 1869. Benteen also maintained that army surgeon Renick had "seen him not only sleeping with that Indian girl all winter long, but [had] seen him many times in the act of copulating with her." Benteen"s obvious disregard for Custer, whom he labeled an "S.O.B... murderer, thief, and liar," certainly undermined his objectivity and perhaps even his reliability on this matter. Since many 19th Century men maintained, at least in public statements, that sexual relations with Indian women degraded non-indians, Benteen may have intended to slander Custer's memory by making these accusations. However, whether or not Custer and Monasetah were actually lovers, rumors as this one demonstrate such entanglements were not considered impossible.

Give it back to the corresponding nation. duh!!!

here's another idea.

In San Francisco, for a lot of folks, being seen as pc and culturally sensitive is far more important than actually being so. so folks who will happily hang out at this nasty place might think twice if there's a lot of publicity over the whole thing.

So, while I now it might be more satisfying to go fsu or something, going and picketing and flyering the place would probably have an impact.

I mean, make it clear that by supporting that bar, you support genocide, cultural imperialism, racism, etc, etc, and shame the owners and patrons.

now, due to the kittens I can't get out there and organize such a thing, but if someone else organized it, I'd show up and put some cat hours into it.
by mama cat
and complained...the guy who answered the phone wouldn't let me talk to a manager because it's really busy, it's happy hour. So he at first seemed amused, then annoyed, but said he'd make my concerns known to the manager.

All in all, that just took me about 2 minutes. try it!

The bar's number is 415-543-3498.

At a minimum, let's make it clear we know and we don't like it.
by deanosor (deanosor [at] comcast.net)
I got a great idea. Tomorrow is April Fool's Day and there will be St. Stuped's Day parade roaming around the Finaancial District. At some point maybe during happy hour we pay a visit to the bar and ask to speak to the manager in person.

where can we find more info on the parade?

Thank you for identifying the cesspool, commonly known as a bar, in particular the notorious Eddie Rickenbacker's and taking the pictures. Now that we have the evidence in front of us, there are many things we can do.

Generally, let us all remember that there is no such thing as a good bar; they are all cesspools. This writer does not drink alcohol or patronize bars.

Let us also remember that racism and male chauvinism are common in all capialist societies, and in the long term, will be eliminated when we eliminate capitalism, which only a labor movement can do.

This particular cesspool bar has absolutely nothing to do with the 9/11 Inside Job, the poor workers at the World Trade Center or Adolf Eichmann. This is simply a sign that we have not be doing as much as we should here in my hometown, so let's all get to work.

1. PICKETLINE TIME
The fastest way to get rid of the teeth, and probably also the guns and motorcycles, is to picket the joint as that will eliminate the profits of this bar. The only thing a private business cares about is its profits. I suggest the picketline start at noon on any weekday, and run for as long into the evening and for as many days as necessary. We need an informational leaflet as well. Please post the date and time the picketline starts at Rickenbacker's so we can all attend. There are lots of people who can do a lunchtime picket as the Financial District/South of Market area is filled with hundreds of people during any weekday, and Second Street near Market is very accessible by public transportation.
We won our civil rights demands in the 1960s by walking many picketlines in front of the many auto showrooms that existed then on Van Ness.
Labor won all its advances with mass picketlines. Let's get a mass picketline in front of Rickenbacker's soon.

2. Complain to City of San Francisco and State of California
The obvious racism and male chauvinism are violations of CIty and State laws prohibiting such obviously racist and anti-woman displays. This bar is probably in violation of the City & State's earthquake code as one good earthquake will knock those motorcycles onto the customers. The gun display is also questionable. All of this should be included in your letters.
Probably the most likely to respond are the 11 Supervisors. Individuals and organizations should send letters and these pictures to the Board of Supevisors either by mail at City Hall, 1 Dr. Carlton Goodlett, San Francisco, CA 94102 or via Email. They can be reached per the Board's website at which will be printed at the end of this article. See:http://www.sfgov.org/site/bdsupvrs_index.asp?id=7271
The State of California's Alcohol Beverage Control Department should also receive your complaints. They have an office near Rickenbaker's and an Email address, at:

Eddie Rickenbackers License Information may be viewed at:
http://www.abc.ca.gov/datport/LQSData.asp?ID=195064000
As you can see, the owner is Hat In the Ring, Inc. and the person who owns this bar is Norman Hobday. The license number is 195064. The license expires this year, April 30, 2005. He had his license suspended in 2000 when the SF Police sent a decoy who was apparently a minor, and that person apparently was able to buy alcohol at Rickenbacker's. We can thus conclude that Rickenbacker's is either not liked by the San Francisco Police, which made the complaint, or the ABC.

First - it would make sense to try to identify any distant relative. I know that many of the cheyenne were massacred at Sand Creek and Washita - so maybe there aren't so many descendants from that time, but it would be advantageous to find a Cheyenne and ask them what they want to do with the bones.

additionally - check this out! oh my god.
This is a video game someone wrote called "Custer's revenge" where the player has to negotiate through various levels where they fight enemies, and at the end if the Custer character wins, he has sex with a squaw who is tied with rope to a stake - all visually depicted with Atari graphics. Since people made and purchased this game, it can't be claimed that society is really okay, and just is unaware of history.

Here is a comparable case, that I remember from several years ago. The anthropology grad student who let his section arrange this protest as part of their class is now at CU Boulder, by the way. I was one of his subjects in his thesis, where he studied economic choices of Seattle youth. In the olden days, Margaret Mead was an innovative anthropologist for trying to understand the culture of others, but now her work seems to have flaws because samoans can point out many areas of her work that were misinterpretations. Now, it makes more sense to let anthropologists interpret their own culture, and allow people in other nations to have enough power to interpret their own culture.

Anyway, the chef Wolfgang Puck had a restaurant called ObaChine on the street where Niketown and Cheesecake factory are. It had a painting at the entrance that looked like one of those racist caricatures from the early 1900s. That is actually less bad than the teeth because those pictures are part of our real history, but aren't actual remains. Here is how that went. They didn't storm the restaurant but did a picket. I don't remember if they took the painting down.

1. The St. Stupeds parade begins at 12 noon at Justin Hermann Plaza, More info can be found on the Indybay calendar. 2. Any fight against Eddie Rickenbackers that i would support, work on, and recommend to my friends, comrades etc. to support and work on, would have to deal with the bar's anti-Indian racism and sexism, and not to do with it being a bar, that it serves alcohol, that it has motorcycles hanging from the ceiling, or whetheer minors might getg served at the bar. Anybody trying to fist these other issues on a coalition or united front would be creating what some marxists call a "bad block". I'll unite to deal with Eddie Rickenbacker's racism and sexism by many different means, but i don't want moralism as suggested by "Socialist" to have any part in this. FYI, "Socialist" also suggested that Porfessor Churchill was a CIA agent, so she/he seems to be ff the deep end.
by another native solidarity activist
Word about this situation has and is being been sent throughout Indian Country, including Native American newswires. I think it's important to find out what her people want (granted that these teeth are Monasetah's). As is stated in the first paragraphs of the article, "If the display is real, than it could be in violation of the Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act." Who are the enforcers of this act?

Personally, I think the ideas of a puke-in or stink bombs that a couple people have posted are ineffective at the least. The actions that people take could affect the outcome of where these remains end up going and how effective this could really be. Again, I hope to hear from the Cheyenne people. There are many ideas floating around. Someone kindly posted many official contacts -names, numbers, emails to notify them of this situation and to apply pressure on as well. Another person suggests a picket. WHO would be the speakers at these picket events??....How about letters to the editor or to the Weeklys as well? After all, the city of SF voted this one of the citys best bars....

I intend to continue notifying Native contacts...Lame Deer / Cheyenne Tribe to find out what they might like to see happen as well as the local chapter of International Indian Treaty Council.

When asked about the artifacts and such, the owner, Norman, said he acquired many of his things from auctions. When asked specifically about the teeth, the native womans remains, he sarcastically said "Remains!? You mean the teeth? and asked if I'd ever gotten any of my teeth pulled. Yes I replied but "not quite the same way as "Custers live-in Squaw", some knocked out by Custer in a jealous pique." Norman laughed and said the reason the teeth were pulled out was because she had rot in her mouth. He laughed at me, asked where did I get that info I replied well right behind you in your glass case on that note there. Norman stated that I was just splitting ends, referring to this 'argument of mine' to be a dead end. He sarcastically asked me what he should he do with them, "Would you like me to bury them?" (snickering) He was told to return them to her people, that there are cultural ways and taboos especially when dealing with a persons remains and that cultural sensitivity should be taken into account and respected. He laughed, said that these are just teeth and sarcastically asked how are native people different than he and others standing nearby (he pointed some non-Native Americans.) He (Norman) replied that concern for cultural sensitivity was "not living in reality" and that we were crazy.

The video game mentioned by CP called "Custer's revenge" is deplorable and we cannot let that one slip by either. "... where if the Custer character wins, he has sex with a squaw who is tied with rope to a stake - all visually depicted with Atari graphics. Since people made and purchased this game, it can't be claimed that society is really okay, and just is unaware of history."

So please, lets work together on this, and think what is most strategic and effective. Getting the teeth returned may be one goal, working in solidarity another, drawing attention to this mentality and how Native Americans remains, ways, sacred sites and lands are getting desecrated. The very uranium used in Iraq is right now poisoning the Navajo and Hopi lands. People are sick there. The Alaskin Wildlife Refuge is another related issue. Nuclear testing and dumping is taking place right now on Western and Goshute Shoshone lands --coming from nuclear poisons and devices MADE RIGHT HERE IN OUR COMMUNITY at the labs in UCBerkeley and Livermore. I believe that Ruckus is working with the Goshute Shoshones currently. Anyways, as Winona LaDuke writes, Native Nations are the host nations. Without them and these ancestral lands, this empire would not be.
Norman is just one small guy, like Eichmann, but is indicative of the larger picture.

That post/picture "business as usual" captures this shithole best, I think: bunch of rich pigs smirking at each other over their class supremacy, in a setting redolent of race supremacy, no less.

I wanna be at the puke-in!! Come on, let's do it! I'll ingest straight knorr gelatin, whole earthworms, and ipecac and projectile vomit into their hair
by Kenton
Any Native who had relations with Custer, doesnt deserve my sympathy, I dont care if those teeth stay there forever!

Maybe if anyone has the arrow that killed Custer than maybe it could hang up there too!

LOL
by x
I thought of not responding to 'Kentons' racist and sexist comment but the thought of it not being addressing just sickened me more. Violence against women, whether they are held captive sex slaves or not, is deplorable. This insensitive behavior is the very same mentality that allows the displays such as the one at Rickenbackers to continue.

Non-native activists should be active in seeing what it is that the native nations want and support that. I agree that this display, (along with the video game mentioned earlier) is deplorable but hold off on *some* of these ideas or bring them to Cheyenne people, native news wires and grassroots organizations yourselves. Allow room for the tribes to take action, at the very least to find out what their wishes may be.
In the meantime, alert more people in the San Francisco community what this bar is doing.
by deanosor (deanosor [at] comcast.net)
Our goal should be to return the teeth and maaybe the guns to her tribal ancesstors. How we get these to go back, should be determined by those doing the acticvity. This bar is a blight on our community. I believe we should begin by demanding the owner return the teeth and clean up his act. (Maybe some reparations might be good.) If that doesn't work in a specifed shsort amount of time, we should begin a campaign that might include picket lines, other forms of community embarassment, and direct actions to affect his business including the ones mentioned here. Remember there are differences within the Indian community. (Some even say Professor Churchill is not an Indian.) Unless there is unanimity amongst the Native American communy, we should not let any one group, no matter how vital it is to have them help figure otu what needs to be done, to hold sway over how we deal with things within our community. People don't have to agree with each other's tactics as long as they/we don't step on each other's toes.

The first thing you do is to go to city hall. After all , who is the Mayor, David Duke? Are the members of the Board of Supervisors Klanspeople? Talk to them about possible violations of federal law re Amerindian remains. And maybe an ordinance should be passed prohibiting exhibitions of firearms in places that serve liquor. Might inspire some drunk to engage in violence after staring at those guns over his beer for a few hours.

Prove that any of the things you mentioned is "fake." Do you work for AIM Inc. or just swallow their lies? Also, referring to those who agree with or respect Churchill as "disciples" is highly laughable - he ain't a fucking prophet or demi-god or whatever - he is just more insightful and on-target than the majority of commentators (especially self-identified "liberals") out there. People who tend to agree with him are often (usually?) the types who refuse to worship at any altar - much less deify people.

Oh yeah, lets all figure how to apply some real pressure (economic is prolly most effective) to this shithole bar.
ummm....Why not just raise some money and buy the teeth? Then we can give them to the appropriate people for burial/rites/whatever. I wouldn't think that the teeth would be that expensive. If everyone chiped in a 20, I'm sure we'd have enough in no time. Heck, we might even be able to persuade the owner of the bar to donate the money we raised to a good charity, maybe even a local Native American one. That'd be a good win-win situation. The teeth get the respect they deserve, the bar owner gets to say he did a good thing by donating to a charity, everyone is happy.

I'm glad to see many people enraged by these pictures and taking that to the next level to ask what to do about it. Very related to this question is what we are going to do about the attacks on Ward Churchill by the University of Colorado.

Hopefully some of you will join us in demanding prosecution of the civil rights violators who are attacking Churchill for taking a strong stand. We're calling for a protest:

Saturday, April 16th, at noon
16th and Mission streets (in San Francisco)

Bring your own posters, noise makers, etc. See below for more on why we'll be out there:

Defend Ward Churchill!
Prosecute the civil rights violators!

At the request of the Colorado governor, the University of Colorado is considering firing tenured professor Ward Churchill for a speech he made about 9/11 in which he called out civilian Amerikans for their complicity in this country’s imperialist attacks on the world. Churchill compared at least some World Trade Center victims to a Nazi named Eichmann who was a bureaucratic cog in the fascist machine.

The firestorm set off by the lynch mob has resulted in over 100 death threats to Ward Churchill and a generally violent climate resulting in the cancellation of speeches. This is intolerable. The federal government should prosecute the leading activists involved and people on Colorado payroll running this witch-hunt for conspiring to deprive Ward Churchill of his civil rights.

The bureaucratic witch-hunt against Churchill should come as no surprise. Ward Churchill had badly hurt the u.$. imperialists with his past books on government documents related to FBI repression of the American Indian Movement and the Black Panther Party.

Churchill’s speech titled “Some People Push Back” came from the quote: “You’ve got to learn, that when you push people around, some people push back.” Amerika pushes around most of the world, invading countries, aiding brutal military regimes, murdering key politicians, and destroying economies, all in the interests of making a profit. Some of those people being pushed around by Amerikan imperialism are going to push back. The real issue above all others is that Ward Churchill told Amerikans they have to take responsibility for their own actions. What he said about World Trade Center victims being little Eichmanns was in fact less extreme than what Amerikans told German civilians after World War II in 1945 and 1946, when there was a collective responsibility movement, the likes of which still present themselves in the commemorations of the Allied bombings of German civilians in Dresden in World War II.

Colorado should impeach its governor for organizing for Ward Churchill’s firing. It’s a violation of civil rights. The governor of Colorado is not protected by the First Amendment to the Constitution. He is part of the government and the First Amendment contrasts between the “government” and the “people.” The governor along with his collaborators on government payroll are organizing this civil rights violation. The Governor proclaims that taxpayer money is funding Churchill, but the legislature only provides 7% of the University of Colorado’s money. What a bunch of cheapskate, posing windbags trying to create the impression that they actually do anything for education by lynching Ward Churchill.

MIM calls on all who want to defend civil rights to defend Ward Churchill. Instead of attacking the messenger (who tells it like it is about Amerikan imperialism) we call for impeachment or prosecution of the civil rights violators, starting with the Colorado governor and the leadership of the University of Colorado.

>>>"Those self-professed "anti-racists" Critical Thinker, gehrig and Sererad don't seem to care about this enough to contribute to the discussion. Why do you suppose that is?"<<<

I haven't read the article and don't want to get embroiled in this particular debate, what with having to put up with your pernicious trolling presence here.

That tells us everything we need to know about how much of an anti-racist Criticle Thinker is. Now let's see what kind of excuses gehrig and Sefarad come up with.

Common people it was Custers concubines Teeth.

any other Native Americans teeth and I would be outraged.

But this women willingly consorted with Custer and I hope she was

at the little big horn when the sitting bull took out that Crazy

Custer.

I suppose all the women raped in acts of war were willing "concubines" too from your logic?

from a previous post:
"Perhaps the most infamous officer-Indian sexual relationship was the rumored affair between Lt. Col. George Armstrong Custer (1839-1876) and a Cheyenne woman named Monasetah. Retired Cpt. Frederick Benteen of the 7th Cavalry, who despised Custer, claimed that, following the Battle of Washita, Custer invited officers "desiring to avail themselves of the services of a captured squaw to come to the squaw Round Up Corral, and select one!" Custer, Benteen charged, took first choice, Monasetah, and lived with her during the winter and spring of 1868 and 1869."

I contacted Eddie Rickenbacker's and talked to the manager on duty, who told me that the teeth are actually from a cocktail waitress who worked there a few years ago-- which is totally different than what other folks have been told. this makes sense, since the teeth are so white and unweathered-- what do folks think about this? are covering themselves? the manager i talked to said that the note about "Custer's Squaw" had been removed from the display due to complaints.... also said that the display is not a glorification of custer but a historical display of his harsh killing methods. to me it seems more like a glorification. so even if the teeth are from a cocktail waitress, there is still work to be done.

How and why would a coctail waitress give the bar her teeth? It sounds like far-fetched, like the bar is covering up. And this even before we did anything substantial. They're on the run.

this is why i took the photos, to document it, for proof! because I knew that once pressure were to be applied to the owner and restaurant as people were finding out, that there was the possibility of these remains disappearing. He needs to be accountable AND RETURN THE REMAINS TO HER PEOPLE. We cannot take his word. The owner explained to those of us who went there initially as tourists that everything in there was "authentic", from auctions years ago. Lets get them returned, tested. Native people go through this all the time and they have to check these things out for themselves for proof. Can we enact the Native American Graves and Repatriation Act?
And lets start a campaign, Worst Bar In SF, lets make up for this indecency. As pointed out by a friend, can you imagine if this were Jewish lampshades? And this was-AND IS a glorification. Just look at that poster "The Winning Of The West".
Action needs to be taken. The teeth will probably appear months later, or just collect dust with other 'artifacts'. they need returned and all of this needs spotlighted in my opinion

I think Ward Churchill rightly called him a "sick fuck". He should be left alone - i think his whole idea is to grab attention. To put this in proper perspective - think how hitler could have been stopped before 1933? - i think its the same mentality.

Didn't Custer get his scalp removed with a dull cutting instrument?
by to J-boy
No, in fact the courageous Yellow Hair had his girly locks cut prior to Little Big Horn to make himself less of a target. The brave one also saved himself a bullet, and used it. I've heard that Native Americans wouldn't touch the body of a suicide. Such is the glorious end of George Armstrong Custer, his only survivor, an old horse. Karma sure -is- a bitch ain't it?

>>This museum would be a good resting spot for her teeth...<<

I read this person's post a few times, but damned if I could tell the color of his or her skin.
