Monday Rally at Diane Feinstein's Home
The Real ID Act is one more frightening piece of repressive legislation, aimed at gutting the human rights of both immigrants and citizens alike, in the bipartisan tradition of the Patriot Act. Among many other provisions, it would set up a national electronic identification system, and make it illegal for states to issue driver's licenses to undocumented immigrants. (More info on the Real ID Act below.)
Last week, the House of Representatives attached the Real ID Act to President Bush's bill to appropriate an additional $81 billion to his war fund. The next day, the House passed both bills, by a vote of 388-43, with the support of San Francisco's Nancy Pelosi, the Democrats' minority leader. The Real ID Act and the war appropriation now go to the Senate.
"WAKE UP CALL TO SENATOR DIANE FEINSTEIN!
"Join immigrant communities to tell Senator Diane Feinstein that we won't tolerate her denying driver's licenses to our communities. Join us for a vigil in front of Feinstein's house.
"Senator Diane Feinstein came out in favor the Real ID Act, which, among other things, will deny undocumented immigrants driver's licenses at a national level. If this law passes (it has already passed the US House of Representatives and will be considered by the US Senate in the next few weeks), it will destroy our efforts to obtain driver's licenses for immigrants here in California...
"The vigil will include speakers, music, candles, and a public display of driver's licenses on Feinstein's front lawn.
"For more information, please contact Renee Saucedo, (415) 553-3404."
WHEN:
Monday, March 21
Vigil begins at 5 PM at Feinstein's house.
(At 4 PM, there will be vehicles to transport people
from Centro del Pueblo to Feinstein's house.
Please bring your car to assist in transportation.)
WHERE:
Feinstein's house: 30 Presidio Terrace (near Arguello)
Centro del Pueblo: 474 Valencia Street (at 16th Street)
· Make it illegal for states to issue driver's licenses to undocumented immigrants.
· Expand the definitions of "terrorist" activity, by creating broad "guilt by association" standards that will prevent many immigrants and their families from gaining legal status.
· Make many procedural changes that make it much more difficult for refugees to get asylum in the US.
· Waive all environmental, labor and civil rights laws that would prevent the building of a 14-mile fence along the San Diego-Tijuana border.
· Implement new high-technology ground surveillance techniques on the border.
· Give unprecedented authority to bounty hunters to "pursue, apprehend and detain" immigrants in deportation proceedings.
One blatant example of the outright racism in the Real ID Act is a provision that requires judges to deny asylum to refugees who have a bad "demeanor." The act also bars the reversal of a judge's denial of asylum based on the lack of documentary evidence. Decisions about legal status and asylum would extend to an applicant's spouse and children, even if they are wholly innocent of the alleged wrong-doing of the applicant.
The Real ID Act's provisions go far beyond its anti-immigrant posturing. As is often the case, anti-immigrant hysteria is being used as a wedge issue to attack the rights of citizens as well.
The American Civil Liberties Union claims that the Real ID Act sets up a "de facto national ID card." The act requires that states issue driver's licenses and identification cards which include "machine-readable technology, with defined minimum data elements," including Social Security numbers. Regulations defining these requirements will be written by the Department of Homeland Security. States will be required to link their motor vehicle department databases to the feds. All applicants will be required to prove their citizenship or immigration status.

What will it take to wake Bush and company up, an atomic bomb? What with all the corporate money to be made off near-slave labor, I'm not even sure that would work either.
I'm a liberal in almost everything, but I'm "republican" in that I don't really feel like having my taxes pay for people who sneak into the country.
California is SCREWED economically because of the insane floods of illegals...
that's the most phoney thing to say ever. who you think you foolin'? you think the left will be tricked by you into your xenophobic scapegoat march against the darker ones? get real
MY RESPONSE:
I don't want my tax dollars to pay for people coming into the country illegally who can barely speak english, can't function in regular society, and work under the table, so americans who actually pay taxes on their earnings go unemployed.
Can I keep my tax dollars and let you pay double for you and me, then?
I am not "against human beings." This is a country. Our tax dollars fuel the country. I don't want to pay for people who sneak into the country illegally and can't even function so they just wind up on welfare and using "free" clinics and other stuff that we normal tax-payers have to pay for.
I'm liberal in everything, but that doesn't mean I want to give my hard-earned money COMPLETELY AWAY.
MY RESPONSE:
My ancestors, when they immigrated to america, learned english, worked hard to excel in school, got normal jobs, and paid taxes.
Illegal immigrants from mexico barely speak english, lack education, are limited in what work they can do, usually wind up using "free" services that WE THE TAX-PAYERS pay for, and often do illegal work, and don't even pay taxes. And when they get sick and go to the hospital, we the tax payers are paying for it.
No thanks.
It isn't about "feeling better than another human." it's about REALITY. This is a COUNTRY. I work hard to earn my money. I don't like my money being taken away and given to other people who shouldn't be receiving it.
If you are so eager to give your money away, please give away double the amount, so I can give nothing. THanks
-- illegals tend to use less gov't services than citizens out of fear of deportation and never collect on social security taxes they've paid
-- without illegal labor, you yourself would be paying *much* more at the cash register for many items you buy every day
you still ain't foolin' anyone with your phoney liberal talk. you're to the right of W with what you speak. even he knows this country runs on cheap illegal labor and wouldn't betray his corporate masters by completely cutting off the supply of below minimum wage workers. they'd have his head.
Not liking illegals flooding into the country isn't "proof" of being liberal or republican
"you're to the right of W with what you speak. even he knows this country runs on cheap illegal labor and wouldn't betray his corporate masters by completely cutting off the supply of below minimum wage workers. they'd have his head."
This is correct about W's corporate masters. But guess who funds your "ally", the National Immigration Forum? Wall Street and Corporate Foundations.
The Immigration Lawyers support this for their pocketbook, they would make millions off another illegal alien amensty. They don't care that amensty and not enforcing the immigration laws discriminates against non-Hispanics, they just want the money.
All you goofed up people can't see who is pulling your strings, you are just patsies for Wall Street and the 15 WHITE billionaires who run Mexico.

I agree,
and ALSO...the reason wages are low, it's BASIC Economics 101. If you have 10 Mexicans in line to work in the feilds, you better keep them, and you will raise wages to keep them. However, with the HUGE flood of Mexicans, you now have 1000 in line. If you don't pick ther fields for 50cents a bushel, there are 100s( 1000s) in line who will.
So, less immigration will result in wages going up.
A worker with few rights that s/he can safely avail themselves of is an employers wet-dream.
Wages are driven down when a large section of the work-force is scared that the bosses will call INS in response to any signs that collective organization and activity is afoot.
That's why people who sincerely care about the interests of workers believe in open borders.

******* now that you have run on at the mouth, it's time to back it up with your facts. I want to see "real sorces" for this info. or- a retraction of your rant
aaron also doesnot have a job, or a life so aaron has nothing to loose except a welfare check.
"Wages are driven down when a large section of the work-force is scared that the bosses will call INS in response to any signs that collective organization and activity is afoot."
Guess what dude, half of the membership of the UFW and SEIU unions are ILLEGAL ALIENS! If you weren't stuck in a purple haze, you would know this, and you would realize Wall Street is pulling your strings.
This is why you make exactly the same statement as the Wall Street Journal: "keep the borders open" (for cheap labor). This is why you oppose the Real ID Act, just like the Wall Street Journal does. They are pulling your strings!
My mom was an immigrant to america, and she learned english, did well in school, and contributed. She didn't sit on a stoop, pick her nose, and mug people
Stop using Native American Indians as an excuse to destroy American. 3% of the Minuteman volunteers are American Indians, a higher number than their percentage of the US population. Not only do most "Anglo" Americans want illegal aliens deported, so do a majority of black, Asian, and Native Americans. Plus a majority of Hispanic US citizens.
Why don't you focus instead on the white minority in Mexico that keeps the Mestizo and Native Mexican majority poor and oppressed. Right now all you are doing is helping this white minority by reducing the social pressure on them to enact sorely needed positive reforms.
Tim claims I'm doing a wall street's bidding because i don't support enacting more repressive measures against immigrants. He asserts that half of the UFW and SEIU membership are illegals but he: 1) conveniently "forgot" to supply any evidence to support this claim or bother to mention that the vast majority of illegal immigrants work in non-unionized jobs for low-wages; and 2) fails to address the fact that repressive measures, like the ones he supports, are tools used selectively by employers to keep undocumented workers from fighting for better conditions.
What makes Tim's pretense of opposition to Wall Street especially laughable is that his group--"Vietnamese For Fair Immigration"--is clearly composed of ex-South Vietnamese supporters who wish the US had continued bombing their country for another decade or so. Hey Tim: is that another expression of your opposition to Wall Street? HA!
While Tim fronts as a principled opponent of big capital, John pretends to care about the fact that a small number of white billionaires controls Mexico. If he really cared, he'd be opposed to the US government's long-time SUPPORT for this very same white elite, and among other things, call for an end to US military aid and assistance to it--like radicals and leftists have been doing for years.
Joe at least has the decency not wrap his anti-immigrant zealotry in a progressive little box. He's just straight-up racist.
wrong. the majority of illegal aliens DO NOT pay taxes, not even property tax (excluding sales tax, being that EVERYONE pays that, including tourists).
-- "illegals tend to use less gov't services than citizens out of fear of deportation and never collect on social security taxes they've paid"
true, only approximately 1/3 of illegals do, but only because of their current numbers. i'm not sure you could say the same in 20 years if the problem flourished like it's past levels.
another point is that if we gave them driver's licenses and other benefits, i think eventually they would feel comfortable enough going to the welfare office.
-- "without illegal labor, you yourself would be paying *much* more at the cash register for many items you buy every day"
by mere cents, it's been analyzed. companies would simply have to hire only LEGAL residents for a liveable wage. aww, boo hoo. and even if i did have to pay a substantial amount of money for a head of lettuce, i'd gladly do so.
"you're to the right of W with what you speak. even he knows this country runs on cheap illegal labor and wouldn't betray his corporate masters by completely cutting off the supply of below minimum wage workers."
he's a neo-con and a globalist. he's in bed with companies that gain from subsidized labor. and the public is slowing acting upon some real long overdue solutions for this mess.
and i'm never supporting that stupid psuedo-punk/anarchist organization known as "food not bombs".
i'm not a racist, or a south vietnamese anti-communist, or anti-immigrant. i don't use "leftist" arguments, i use logic and facts.
i AM opposed to the US government's long-time SUPPORT of the big elite in Mexico, but 1) i would never associate with your neo-anarchist ilk, (which carry some strange and hilarious ideals behind your actions) who would fight that issue, and 2) i don't know of any large "military aid or assistance" from the US being sent to Mexico to support these big elite, directly. i'd like to see some proof of that.
1. the burden of proof is on the employers.
2. wouldn't it make more sense to go after the employers that violate worker's rights as opposed to so-called "repressive" laws?
that follows the same logic of: let's get rid of laws because too many times, cops violate people's civil rights (instead of simply going after specific cops who are the culprits).
If you want to find out about the UFW and SEIU membership, call them up and ask. I did. Plus why do they spend millions trying to get amnesty for illegal aliens?
"repressive measures, like the ones he supports, are tools used selectively by employers to keep undocumented workers from fighting for better conditions." We support strictly enforcing the laws against hiring illegal aliens. If employers cannot hire illegal aliens, how can they be repressed?
How do you know what South Vietnamese wanted, you weren't there. We wanted the US to keep supplying us with equipment and weapons as they promised in the 1972 agreement. This would have cost much less than what the Americans wasted when they were there. But the US reneged and cut off all support.
Yes, we support capitalism, but not corruption and all power being held by a rich few. This is Wall Street's method and purpose in supporting illegal immigration.
But the best part is you say 1 million Vietnamese immigrants are "anti-immigrant". Like I said, stuck in a purple haze.
Maybe there is a better name for them.
Beware it is coming in 2005, the RFID passport starts over the next couple mos.
I know many americain citizens who are not allowed to legally drive. There called divorced fathers, no right to an identity, no right to work. Thats what happens to a CITIZEN.
You cannot legally open a bank account overseas either, a passport is required and a US passport makes the bank liable to the patriot act for all customers.
You cany get around this, there is no more provacy, no more right to free media as they know every person and can have you arrested without charges as they do now with unwanted reporters in IRAQ.
Mexico won't accept americain immigrants they have FREEDOM there and they want it protected.
In a few months the border with mexico is set to close for americains leaving, you will have to answer to "papers please" and have a passport that requires a REAL ID to leave the USA!
