Thursday, March 10
This Thursday, March 10, 2005, the House Appropriations Committee will vote on President Bush’s proposed supplemental increase of eighty billion dollars ($80,000,000,000.00) for the war. This is in addition to the 160 billion ($160,000,000,000.00) already misspent and wasted.

Please ask your friends, family, co-workers, and allies to write their Congress members immediately urging them to vote AGAINST the Bush plan. It is easy to do, free, and very effective!! Demand that any new funds approved be allocated solely for troop withdrawal and interim troop protection. Just click here http://capwiz.com/pdamerica/issues/alert/?alertid=7157066&type=TA

In addition, please ask your Congressperson to support amendments to the appropriations bill that call for an end to the occupation and support for Iraqi sovereignty, such as Representative Lynn Woolsey's (D-CA) House Resolution ( H.Con.Res.35 ) to End the US Occupation of Iraq.

Also, Thursday will be a National Call-in Day for this issue. Please contact your Congress members at their local district offices. Our Representatives and Senators need to hear from the grassroots NOW !

The Reedley Peace Center presents: WHO'S COUNTING? MARILYN WARING ABOUT SEX, LIES AND GLOBAL ECONOMICS. Hope Nisly and Stan and Delores Friesen. Abortion has become a contentious and divisive topic in our society and in our churches. There are no easy solutions for this issue, and the discussion tends to be vitriolic. How can we listen to the pain-filled stories that surround a decision for or against abortion? How does our social and cultural milieu shape our attitudes? This evening will be an attempt to put the discussion into historical and ethical perspectives in a way that promotes healing and transformation. The emphasis will be on a process of meaningful and constructive dialogue and not solely on finding answers.

Light potluck at 6:30. Program begins at 7 pm. This event is sponsored by the Reedley Peace Center and will be held at the Fellowship Hall of First Mennonite Church, on 'L' street between 12th and 13th streets in Reedley. Admission is free. Contact Don Friesen by email at dfriesen@telis.org

Greenaction for Health and Environmental Justice - in Modesto. Residents of communities on the west side of Stanislaus County and community and environmental justice groups will hold a protest on Tuesday, March 15, 2005 at 6 p.m. in front of the City and County Government Building to demand an end to the importation and burning of wastes from other states and counties at the Covanta garbage incinerator in Crow’s Landing.

At 6:30 p.m. community members will attend the Stanislaus County Board of Supervisors meeting and testify about their concerns. Many residents are upset that County officials actively seek to import waste from other areas to burn at the incinerator, especially since the incinerator emits dioxin and other highly toxic pollutants into the air. Dioxin is the most toxic substance known to science, even at low levels of exposure. Dioxin causes cancer, birth defects, reproductive illnesses and other health problems.

The Grayson Neighborhood Council recently got documents from Stanislaus County officials documenting the types of waste imported for incineration from other states and counties. Residents were alarmed to learn that waste was being burned from Oregon, Nevada and Washington and many counties across California.

Although many believed the incinerator just burned garbage, it also burns drugs and other contraband, firearms, used oil filters, shredded plastic, toner cartridges and pharmaceuticals.

Women’s Foundation Hosts Summit to Release the Central Valley ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH REPORT. The Report Looks at Impacts of Industry on Public Health in the Central Valley

The Women’s Foundation of California will host an environmental health summit at the UC Merced Center—Fresno and release their report Gasping for Air: Why We Must Cultivate a Healthier Central Valley. The Summit, which is open to the public, will provide an opportunity for community dialogue around strategies for decreasing the pollution impacting the health of Central Valley residents.

Gasping for Air combines statistics and anecdotal stories to paint a picture of environmental conditions that the Foundation reports are becoming serious public health issues for the entire state. The Valley supplies one-quarter of the food that America eats, contributing to California’s $27 billion in agricultural revenues. Foundation staff and collaborating organizations believe that there are several contributing factors, including the Central Valley’s large industries, which can be linked to unhealthy conditions in the region.

"While we’re not challenging the need for available and affordable food, it is essential that we look at the whole cost — including the costs to human health," says Judy Patrick, Vice President of Programs for the Women’s Foundation. "Given the statistics, it’s hard for industry to continue to argue that the ‘science isn’t strong enough’ to warrant changing the way they operate."

Funding for the summit and report are provided by: Kaiser Permanente, The California Endowment, The California Wellness Foundation, The Ford Foundation, The Marguerite Casey Foundation, Marisla Foundation and the van LobenSels/RembeRock Foundation.

This event will be held at the UC Merced Center – Fresno, 550 East Shaw Avenue, Fresno, California. For more information, please visit www.womensfoundca.org

Unitarian Universalist Church Presents Mark Graham and Orville Johnson in Concert. Why would two of the most talented, zany, and widely-respected roots musicians in the United States—both of whom have appeared on Garrison Keilor's Prairie Home Companion—choose to go on the road as a duo? Simple: Mark Graham and Orville Johnson love the magic when they play together as much as their audiences do. "People comment on that all the time," says Orville. "They can tell we're having a good time up there. We play on a lot of different emotions." Wry humor, virtuoso harmonica, soulful blues, hot pickin', and sweet country vocals—that’s what you get when Orville and Mark combine forces as the Kings of Mongrel Folk.

Graham's harmonica virtuosity on Irish and American fiddle tunes and his rich, woody sound on clarinet are well-known to fans of Kevin Burke's Open House. Graham's sardonic skewering of contemporary life, in such songs as "I Can See Your Aura and It's Ugly" and "Zen Gospel Singing" have been cult classics for years. His songs have been recorded by many, including the Austin Lounge Lizards, Bryan Bowers, and the Limelighters.

Orville Johnson, an instrumental gunslinger whom the Seattle Times describes as a "player's player," has a gift of finding the "secret ingredient" that makes a song sound letter-perfect, whether it's an R & B tune from New Orleans, a country blues, or a jazzy ballad. Orville's guitar, dobro, and quavering, honeyed vocals have seasoned more than a hundred recordings, soundtrack, and countless TV and radio commercials. He also produces records and teaches at events like the International Guitar Seminar and Pt. Townsend Country Blues Workshop. He has shared the stage with artists such as Doc Watson, Bonnie Raitt, and John Lee Hooker.

Between the two of them, they have played many of the most coveted gigs in North America and Europe: the Newport Folk Festival and Caffe Lena, out East; South by Southwest, in Texas; the Bay area's Freight and Salvage and Kuumbwa; London's Festival Hall and Glasgow's Celtic Connections Festival, in Europe; and on their home turf, Bumbershoot and the Northwest Folklife Festival.

Though they were longtime acquaintances on the Northwest folk scene, it was at a Folklife Festival jam session in 1991 that they hatched their plan to expand their kingdom of mongrel folk nationwide and, yes, even worldwide. Wherever they go, their performances and recordings have inspired raves: Sing Out Magazine says "[They] performed with taste and skill and [were] boosted by the nuttiness of Graham's songs."

Mark and Orville will be performing on Friday, March 18th, at 7:30 p.m. at the Unitarian Universalist Church of Fresno, 4144 N. Millbrook Avenue (just south of Ashlan). For ticket information contact Larry Bassman at 244-0562, or lbassman@pacbell.net
