FACES OF HAITI 2005

With the approach of the first anniversary of the US-sponsored coup and the ouster of democratically-elected President Aristide, a slide presentation and discussion will provide details of what life is like today for most of Haiti’s people. The program is scheduled for 7:00 p.m., Wednesday, February 23, 2005, at the First United Methodist Church, 9 Ross Valley Drive (at Fourth Street), San Rafael.
Two members of the Let Haiti Live Women’s Delegation will describe current problems facing women as a result of last February’s regime change. From January 13-22, 2005, the delegation visited several geographical areas in Haiti and interviewed women from a broad range of backgrounds. The focus of the trip was on the social, economic, and political challenges facing women, including women’s health, HIV/AIDS, violence against women, human rights, and labor rights. In Port au Prince they interviewed representatives of several women’s cooperatives. The delegation also visited a highly successful community-based health clinic in an outlying village.

Members of the Marin Interfaith Task Force on the Americas will share highlights of their experience at the World Social Forum in Porto Alegre, Brazil, from January 26-31. MITF was instrumental in arranging the Haiti Workshop at the Forum and sponsored the participation of Haitian nationals, who clearly presented details of the worst humanitarian crisis in our hemisphere to the largest gathering of progressive non-governmental organizations and individuals in the world.

A $5-10 donation is requested. No one turned away for lack of funds. For more information, please call 415/924-3227. This venue is wheelchair accessible.
