David Horowitz at UC Berkeley Feb 3

by cp
Well, I have modest mouse tickets that night, and I saw him the last time. There should be some good people watching dynamics if you can sit through this. Horowitz typically delivers an uncontroversial talk on free speech, and the crappy set of people he worked with in Berkeley during the early 1970s who murdered people.
If you read up on his history though, he is a big jerk who is incapable of non-black and white thinking. He behaves like a dry drunk. I don't have to prove this- go read for yourself

Lecture: Conservative pundit David Horowitz on academic freedom
Feb. 3, 8:15 p.m., Valley Life Sciences Building

David HorowitzAt the invitation of the Berkeley College Republicans, author and civil rights activist David Horowitz will lecture on "academic freedom." A founder of the New Left movement in the 1960s — and a Berkeley alum — Horowitz in his later years has exchanged liberal activism for conservative commentary. His current focus is on promoting his "Academic Bill of Rights", an eight-point manifesto that seeks to eliminate what he considers to be political bias in university hiring and grading. Horowitz charges that conservatives are systematically excluded from faculties and that liberal bias in universities is so widespread as to amount to indoctrination.

In 1996 Horowitz was a spokesman for the California Civil Rights Initiative, preventing government from discriminating against — or granting preferential treatment to — any individual or group on the basis of race, sex, color, ethnicity, or national origin. A self-described outspoken opponent of censorship and racial preferences, Horowitz supported Ward Connerly’s Racial Privacy Initiative. He is the author of "The Politics of Bad Faith"; "The Art of Political War"; "Radical Son," his autobiography; "Uncivil Wars : The Controversy Over Reparations For Slavery"; and most recently, the pamphlet "How the Left Undermined America's Security."

David Horowitz may well have worked with "crappy set of people ... in Berkeley during the early 1970s who murdered people". But for the last couple of decades he's been a paid attack dog for a truly crappy set of people -- our capitalist ruling class -- who murder more people every few seconds than his pseudo-left Berkeley pals might have murdered in their lifetimes.

And calling Horowitz a "civil rights activist" is like calling Joseph Mengele a health care activist. The only "civil rights" David Horowitz is concerned about are those of people, usually white men, whose "rights" (i.e., privileges) are threatened by those below them in the socio-economic heirarchy. His "Academic Bill of Rights" is an attempt to shift the political climate on campus even further to the right than it already is, just as right-wing media activists have managed to shift the media further to the right by constantly repeating the absurd charge of "liberal bias".

There's nothing "uncontroversial" about this guy. He should be protested as loudly and boisterously as possible.

Don't knee-jerk jump to the bait and his hostile photo-op. Let there be only rows of anachronistic white college republican males shown in the news photos there to hear him. The left shouldn't jump for raw meat everytime it's dangled out. Let the event newspaper photos look like a 1950's classroom of preppy white males - and turn horrorwitz into a non-event.

That's what happened last time when he was on his african-american baiting tour, where he had put an ad in the student newspaper saying that americans descended from slaves owed a debt of gratitude to white americans for saving them from Africa.
Black students didn't show up at all. The only group was the loud spartcist league, which unfortunately gave his outside right-wing radio listener audience some meat to grasp on to. So far I've seen zero advertising on campus, which is a good thing. Horowitz, more than anyone else, would have his ego stroked with every protester who shows up. He likes to think he's dangerous.
by have i told you?
It is good that cp has posted this info here on indybay. If I had to choose between seeing Modest Mouse (to have a good time) or seeing David Horowitz (to protest the messages of hatred) I think I would choose to see Modest Mouse.

Last night in Santa Cruz, I saw Modest Mouse for the first time, though I've been a fan since 1998. The show had its moments, but overall it was not a very good show and from what i heard after the show, people had a lot of complaints. Issac Brock had a lot of complaints too, mostly about the sound at the catylyst. Even though the sound was not very good, and the set was kind of short and without an encore, I still had a very good experience. We must remember the importance of enjoying ourselves! (even though the emo-indie rockers, modest mouse, are on Sony's label).

All that said, I also feel it is important to directly challenge the messages of hate which will, without a doubt, spew forth from the mouth of David Horowitz and his little army of haters. Horowitz runs the hate-site FrontPageMag.com which is a key resource for haters such as Lee Kaplan and DAFKA. An excellent expose of Lee Kaplan, DAFKA, David Horowitz, and other haters such as the Protest Warrriors has been published on Indybay and should be read by all. It may take about twenty minutes or so to read, but please do, the information is key for understanding the types of organizations fighting against our movement.

Issac Brock asked at last night's show, "Did you hear about the elections in Iraq? Bush won again."

If you go to the show, i really hope you have a great time. you deserve it!

If you fight back the hate with the truth and show up at the David Horowitz event, may peace be with you. Thank you for resisting the haters and spreading the truth and true compassion.
""Like the “frontpagemag” operation, Students for Academic Freedom is one of several organizations under the leadership umbrella of David Horowitz . SAF doesn’t actually promote “freedom” as much as encouraging students to turn in their teachers for saying things they don’t like or giving them grades they don’t want. If this seems eerily similar to approaches used by fascist campaigns throughout the world, that’s because it is. This website includes organizing tools, blank complaint forms for students to pass out and an “Academic Bill of Rights,” which amounts to a plan for academic censorship. It also has a “National and State Legislation” section (on the left scroll-down menu) and files on teachers nationwide they deem to be “too liberal.” The homepage even includes an insult aimed the target audience --- a graphic of the “hear-no-evil, see-no-evil, speak-no-evil” monkeys, traditionally a representation of people who want to ignore reality.""

Horowitz doesn't give a rat's ass what you think. He will speak. You can't stop him, and he (and you) know it.
by cp
yes.. but you're missing the point. Go to his event and watch, and I would almost bet money that they're not going to fill that auditorium with students this time.
There is the possibility that a right wing radio station will drum up some supporters, but the students there aren't interested or don't know who he is. I bet that there will be 200 registered students or fewer, and almost all of them members of the 500 person college republicans club, i.e. less than 1/3 of the 600 person introduction to biology class or 1/5 of the introduction to chemistry class. Or perhaps if the college republicans totally swing into action generating a fiasco tomorrow, there could be a few more. When conservative justin Raimondo was in that room, there were about 30 people.

Ah yes, instead of debating Horowitz's comments let's just rip down his flyers because I don't like what he says. Good to see that students of Berkely are so open-minded about things and have such great respect for the first amendment.
by radical
"Fellow Traveller" is obviously a Horowitz fan trying to tar his opponents as oppressive and pre-emptively explain away the small crowd that he'll be drawing.
by Fellow Traveler
If I do see any flyers I'm not going to rip them down cause I don't like what Horowitz says. He isn't here to say anything, or try to make a point. I've seen him speak before and all he wants to do is stir up the 20 active college republicans and have everyone see "how opressed they are".

If you want to go make noise and protest him, disrupt his speech, argue, whatever, by all means go ahead. Give him hell. I went to protest Michelle Malkin (sp?) when she came around saying that internment was justified. But in Horowitz's case I don't think that noisy protests are the best way to deal with him.
by Fellow Traveler
The other reason I'm not going to see Horowitz is that there's a far more interesting discussion going on in Barrows hall at 8 PM on Thursday. Someone from Iraq Veterans Against the Wat is going to be speaking, which I reccomend to anyone who wants to learn something Thursday night.

They sent this out to workers in the area. I bet Horowitz demanded such security:

Controversial conservative author David Horowitz will be speaking in
2050 VLSB tonight. Protesters are likely and UCPD will be present.
Though it is not likely that anyone will take out their disagreements
with Mr Horowitz on the building, it is possible. To ensure the
safety of your people and your work please make sure all of your
areas are locked after 5pm. Do not work in labs this evening with
hallway doors open or unlocked.

STANDARD ULTRA-RIGHT /DAVID HORRORWITZ /DANIEL PIPES /LOONEY ULTRA-RIGHT WING SPEECHES OPERATING PROCEDURE TACTIC.

RIGHT-WING S.O.P.:

1) MAKE SURE ALL THE PROGRESSIVE/LEFTISTS KNOW YOU -- SOME FLAMING INCENDIARY ULTRA-RIGHT-WINGER -- ARE COMING TO CAMPUS. (Send them special notices; sliip them under the leftists' doors).

FLING WILD INCENDIARY ACCUSATIONS LIKE, "BLACK MOTHERS SAY THEY'LL ALL GO ON WELFARE!!", OR "LEFTISTS PLOT ASSASSINATIONS AGAINST MAINSTREAM-TO-CONSERVATIVE PROFESSORS!!"

MORE PROGRESSIVES/LEFTISTS WILL KNOW YOU'RE COMING TO CAMPUS THAN CONSERVATIVE OR MAINSTREAM STUDENTS! (Most mainstream undergrads won't even know who Horrorwitz, Pipes, etc are! -- but the progressive/leftist horror will inform them.)

ESPECIALLY MAKE SURE THAT THE SPARTS KNOW. YOU CAN COUNT ON THEM -- ESPECIALLY TO SHOW UP WITH GRAPHIC SIGNS CALLING FOR THE START OF THE REVOLUTION AND THE WORLDWIDE MASS OVERTHROW OF THE CAPITALIST STATE -- OR MAYBE THEY WILL EVEN BURN AN AMERICAN FLAG!!

2) NOW MAKE SURE THAT THE CAMPUS COPS KNOW THAT YOU'RE COMING. CAMPUS REPUBS WILL DEMAND *PRESIDENTIAL*-LEVEL SECURITY!

HIRE A *PHALANX* OF OFF-DUTY COPS IN UNIFORM TO MAKE HORRORWITZ/PIPES/ETC *LOOK* **REALLY** IMPORTANT, OR LIKE THEY REALLY HAVE SOMETHING DAMNING TO SAY, AND THUS UNDER DIRE THREAT FROM THE LEFT!!

(because the campus cops are only going to send out about 4 or 5 cops at the most)

3) MAKE INCENDIARY SPEECH WITH SUITABLE PAUSES FOR LEFTIST HOOTS AND HOWLS RIGHT AFTER SOME PARTICULARLY RACIST (AGAINST BLACKS, ESPECIALLY ARABS, LATINOS, ETC) OR MISOGYNIST REMARK.

4) GET THE HOSTILE PHOTO OP AND VIDEOCLIP OF THE 'MURDEROUS' LEFT-WING THRONGS, HOSTILE GAPING MOUTHS AND THREATENING RAISED FISTS THAT YOU CAME THERE FOR IN THE FIRST PLACE!!

The local and even student newspapers will cooperate in getting just the unrepresentative photo (say, a flag burning by *one* person) or the most ineffective random 'leftist' reaction quote that you need.

(You really didn't expect to change anyone's mind. After all this wasn't *EVER* meant to really be an *open* dailogue/debate/Q&A in the first place -- just an ultra-right-wing fundraising platform.)

5) SEND OUT GLOSSY RIGHT-WING BROCHURES WITH CAPTIONS SAYING:

"YOU SEE!!? CONSERVATIVE SPEAKERS, PROFESSORS AND COLLEGE REPUBLICANS UNDER *SEIGE*!!: SEND ME MONEY *NOW*!!"

AFTER ALL, THAT WAS THE WHOLE PURPOSE OF THE GAMBIT (in particular to enrich Horrorwitz/Pipes/etc *himself*!) -- AS AN ULTRA-RIGHT-WING PROPAGANDA TOUR AND CAMPUS FUNDRAISER WITH LEFTISTS AS UNWITTING ACCOMPLICES IN THE WHOLE CHARADE!

It's okay to protest a *REAL* threat to the campus/community/world -- I certainly have -- but pick the right person, place, circumstances, and time, when there really *is* a threat instead of just a hype. And come armed with a specific tactic or demolishing information -- NOT just an emotional backlash -- like I did when I shot Horrorwitz down back when he came to campus on his anti-Black/anti-Reparations tour a several years ago. (I forced him to admit that the 1st Amendment did not require a student newspaper to accept a paid ad -- especially a verbally-spiked racially-stereotyped incendiary one.)

I also participated in the wonderful Netanyahu protest! I followed up with effective newspaper columns about both (my Horrorwitz one was published in student newspapers nationwide), intellectually reinforcing the protest. But, we don't have to attend Horrorwitz's publicity gambit to write letters to the editor (Daily Cal, Daily Planet, Oakland Trib, Chronicle, etc.) intellectually ripping apart his bogus position.

The majority of university professors -- almost regardless of political leanings are already *NOT* behind Horrorwitz's academic McCarthyism which they know ultimately potentially threatens them all!

BUT LET'S NOT JUMP EVERYTIME THE ULTRA WACKY RIGHT DANGLES OUT RAW RED MEAT!

(Otherwise, one day the right will trot out *Gerhig* or *non-Critical Thinkifier* and *hype* them!)
