Thousands oppose anti-choice march in SF

by Jeff Paterson (jeff [at] paterson.net)
In opposition to anti-choice SF mobilization, thousands marched from Powell and Market to the Embarcadero to keep abortion legal. Most then lined the march route to confront the anti-choice marchers.

i'm so proud of all of you. you really are educating people when you take to the streets. most people wouldn't even recognize the importance of these pressing concerns if it wasn't for the visibility of demonstrations such as this one.

in the good 'ol usa, we have such rampant corruption in bush's government, that street protests have become increasingly more important to let our voices be heard. without large, unified demonstrations there are few significant forums to directly express ourselves at noticeable proportions.

public displays are absolutely necessary in building the america we all know is possible.
by great website of women's stories
Great pictures!

Here's a great site that gives women's stories of what abortions were like before abortion was legal.

You will own us? So is that what Bush means by his "ownership" society?

You don't get to own anything but your own responsibility for your hatred.

You want to control people and then you get mad at them when they don't want to be controlled.

There are lots of names for that. Control freak. Egomaniac. Sociopath. Facist. Pick one. Heck, pick two or three. They all apply.

My body is my right, is not my mother's right
My baby's body is my baby's right
My mother doesn't have right to take away my life
I don't have right to take away my baby's life
Had my mother chosen abortion, I would not be here, standing in the street on January 22nd 2005, protesting to pro-life people.

You are tissue. Anthropomorphizing tissue is not an argument. And if you were well along in term and your birth threatened your mother's life, although it is sad, your birth would need to be terminated. These people are putting words in your non-existant mouth and trying to appeal to irrational emotion. That's what they do, because they don't respect your mother.

Radical sisters, your progressive light shines through...I love you all. I've marched with you for 40 years and my love just goes out to you who want a peaceful world and a healthy planet. But...
the truth is that love is not enough...marches are not enough...forty years in the streets have taught me to look at his-story more closely and at her-story. Because we did not organize a radical political arm to take power...we have failed to take power...we are failing the children...and the planet.

The patriarchs don't give a damn about our marches. They see them as a circus. Fascists organize their own alienated and oppressed women to stop us from getting a political arm
but we can get their women back when we can prove to them that we will save the planet from destruction by putting the military money into social programs we have the real power -the consumer power!
Radical Sisters, stop begging...organize your own political party...move forward or go backwards!

I would certainly hope some right wing idiot things that we SFers are fucked up (unlike you I actually have the balls to type the word). SF is the greatest city in the world. If you don't like it don't come. We didn't want you here anyway.

"And if you were well along in term and your birth threatened your mother's life, although it is sad, your birth would need to be terminated."

Er. While I agree that if at any point the only way to save the mother is to abort the fetus, then so be it, I don't think this statement is accurate. If "you" were well along in term and threatening your mother's life (most common cause would be pre-eclampsia, eclampsia, or HELLP) it would be no safer to abort than to deliver via C-section. In fact, the section might be safer in many instances, as C-section scars rarely impact future fertility as much as D&C's do, and the recovery is usually shorter.

I meant if the mother's life was at risk at any time and there was no other option.
