Amnesty International USA, the UNA-USA East Bay/UNICEF Center, , the Bears for UNICEF and UC Berkeley Model UN, extends to you an invitation to participate Human Rights Day at UC Berkeley.
The purpose of the event is to bring an awareness of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights to the UC Berkeley campus and community, and to commemorate this universal document pioneered by Eleanor Roosevelt at the UN, which has become a solid foundation for many human rights treaties and resolutions around the world. The Center and groups will have an opportunity to present their information tables with materials, and candles representing struggle for human rights.
This event is open to the public and targets anybody who will be passing by on the Sproul Plaza on that last day of classes. A Tentative Program includes: an Opening Statement by Rita Maran, UCB Professor of Human Rights and UNA-USA East Bay Chapter President at 11:45 a.m., followed by Brief Reflections (3 min. each) by the representatives of the student groups on the importance of human rights work in their organizations. Around 12:15, Merrill Collins will lead the group into a chant, which she wrote based on the text of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
