"Gotanda is a polemicist who sees both sides of a question, a writer whose grievances are balanced by a wicked sense of humor."
-The New York Times
Fist of Roses uses elements of personal narrative, live beat boxing and movement to explore the definition of masculinity in our culture and its relationship to violence-primarily violent acts in relationships. Developed by Philip Kan Gotanda and Campo Santo through a series of interviews, open readings and public discussions with audience members and community groups, Fist of Roses investigates what pushes a person to hurt-even kill-someone they love.
This play furthers a powerful relationship between Campo Santo and Philip Kan Gotanda (his play floating weeds premiered at Intersection in 2001) and continues the company's distinctive trajectory of working with this country's most important writers - not just playwrights, but also fiction writers and poets - to work in a small, community-based space. Unlike commissions, Campo Santo + Intersection are committed to developing unprecedented long-term partnerships that create a lasting space and an engaged audience for the development and realization of the boldest new theatre in the country. All of the plays are developed over a two to three year period and all the writers we work with, including Denis Johnson, Naomi Iizuka, Octavio Solis, Dave Eggers, Jimmy Santiago Baca, Greg Sarris, Jessica Hagedorn, Erin Cressida Wilson, and others.
Celebrating its 40th Anniversary next year, Intersection for the Arts is San Francisco's oldest alternative art space and presents challenging new works in literature, theatre, visual and interdisciplinary arts. We depend on the support of people like you. Please help ensure that Intersection is around for 40 more years and become a Member today.
