Bush Elected, People in Streets!

by Peter Maiden (pmaiden [at] pacbell.net)
Over 5,000 people hit the streets in San Francisco the night of November 3 to protest the re-election of the worst president in living memory. The demonstration was sponsored by Not in Our Name and included the participation of the ANSWER Coalition and many others.

As the shock of Dubya's relection dissapates ( undoubtedly this will take longer for the ABB crowd - Michael Moore may need a period of cardiac rehab ) anti-war and anti-globalization activists are beginning to talk about the need to mount the most militant, powerful counter-inaugural protests possible, with the intent of completely derailing the coronation ceromonies in January .

Such an convergence - rather than the usual permitted march and rally scenario - could inspire a sustained national effort to raise the social and material economic costs to our rulers for pursuing the Bush agenda -- and make the country ungovernable...if we have the courage and determination to see it through in cities and towns across the country. At the very least, we can force Bush and Ascroft et al to completely militarize the nation's capital, and project a powerful image of resistance from the heart of the Empire.

Resistance is fertile.
by do that. go there
while they pass every law they ever wanted, and spend every penny of social security on weapons.

wonder who's gonna win that one.

sure wish we had even an opposition party.........

When will you people fucking realize that all your bullshit posturing about revolution and making the country ungovernable is not only unrealistic but it's completely absurd. You want to change the world? Here's a novel concept- organize. Organize for real, concrete change. You want to make this country better start working on issues that actually resonate with people- access to affordable health care, living wage, the right to form a union, environmental justice, immigration reform, decent public services- not fucking revolution. Nobody gives a shit about your sophisticated anti-capitalist analysis- its is meaningless to someone who is struggling to pay the rent or feed their kids.

You want to know why the right kicked our collective ass nationwide on tuesday night? Because they are better organized then we are. They've been building a real political machine for thirty years while we've been running around like idiots championing one stupid wedge issue after another. You know, it's so niave to think that we can create an organization in two years that is strong enough the fight against a beheamoth that's been growing for close to thirty.

So with that in mind I leave you with this- If you don't want to live in a world controlled by people who don't represent your issues, start actually doing something to change that. You know, the wonderful thing about living in this country is that people have the ability and the freedom to create organizations so that they can do things together that they can't get done alone.

So please- put down your Bakunin or your Kropopkin or whatever, stop hanging out with those annoying ISO kids, leave you black ski mask and hoody at home, take a fucking shower, get out on the streets and start organizing.

What is real, Not this democratic nation, nor this war on terror, its a war of greed, to up hold sad american ideals about working a life away to realize some consumer satisfaction which is disguised by political lies and sold to you and I through the material world.
The protest yesterday was an insightful experience and should be as starting point for us all. some of you are right we need to organize but to be a revolution is to alway be having a revolution it is never ending, for years our society has collectively been silent, the anachist demenstration last night was a fight against the dominant power to show that we do not FEAR arrest or assult. And Bush and his slave cops can not stop what must be done to insure that we Americans do not fuck the rest of the world over any more.
SO I thank all the activist wheather you beleive in peacful demonstrations or more extremest methods. On thing I did hear yesterday which I urge all of you to understand the profoundness of is that "If they take one they take us all" fight the lies and save the truth, peace to all

Thank you Peter Maiden for your excellent photos of our march.

i agree for the most part that there is often a disconnect between real life issues and demonstrations/direct action. it is difficult at times to find adequate words to connect a socio-political analysis with action, however, direct action must be informed and somehow shaped by this theory. without an anti-imperialist ideology backing and shaping our actions we will never be able to understand what we are fighting for or how to fight for that cause. yet, it is not enough to simply be able to drop names or quote a few lines from vanguard political theorists. this theories must be applied to actions on and off the streets.

oh man, i can't wait to move to the bay area. you guys have got it going on!

I was there the other night. I needed to do SOMETHING. I am feeling totally disempowered. I know four years of Kerry would be more of the same imperialist and capitalist bullshit. I just cannot take Bush anymore. We need to get creative and serious here people!

Did any photographers follow the black blocers after the initial protest?
by sh
to protest is not to do it for just one night then go home . No it is some thing we you do for a life time every day every week and so on the rest of the world understand this-so why don't we. that is the only thing that will change any thing.

the vast majority of the anti-capitalist contingent, and very likeley many of the other marchers, are actually engaged in organizing with and within communities of color and working class communities. just 'cause you don't see pix of it on indybay doesn't mean it in't happening.

remember that we are all going to be clobbered by the right wing on a regular basis, so let' be gentle with each other, especially when we disagree.

Another way to freeze these assholes is look up online who supported funds to the Bush campain, and totally not do business with them, they need us and without us; there is no business, and even if it means giving up some of your favorite deodorants and cosmetics, even foods, dammit start planting your own in your backyard if you have one. I'm in Florida, but I am campaining to put this clown out of business by spreading the word out to coworkers, family and friends.
