San Jose Meeting Focuses on Police Killings
The Justice Review Committee of the Santa Clara County Human Relations Commission meet on Thursday Evening, October 21 to discuss killings by police. In attendance were members of the family of slain citizen Rudy Cárdenas, including his daughter, activist Regina Cárdenas, seen below.
The Committee has been working with community members on issues of police accountability for some time. It was pointed out that in San Jose six of thirty homicides in the year were committed by police, a whopping twenty percent.
Indymedia spoke with Regina Cardenas in the following interview:
Peter Maiden: What’s your take on what happened tonight?
Regina Cárdenas: There were a lot of good suggestions. Hopefully they will take things seriously, and I’m sure they will. Hopefully people higher up will take notice and there will be changes made.
PM: Do you find this Commission to be made up of people you can work with?
RC: Yeah, they’ve all been very helpful so far, we feel comfortable speaking with them, and I feel like they’re going to help us to do some good.
PM: Where does it go from here, to an open Grand Jury in Zaim Bojcic’s case?
RC: Well, that’s what we’re hoping for. They’re hoping that [the officer who shot Zaim] gets prosecuted as a civilian. But we hope that at least the Grand Jury happens.
PM: How are things going right now in the case of your father?
RC: We’re sort of at a standstill. Mike Walker, the agent who shot my father, his lawyer is actually trying to get the case dismissed at the moment. Which is I guess to be expected. We’re going to keep fighting that as much as we need to.
