Jeff Blankfort: Time to Take Back KPFA?
KSFO/KGO corporate executive Marnie Tattersall is now in charge of KPFA's General Manager hiring process.
One might have hoped that establishing local control at Berkeley's KPFA, with a governing board elected largely by its listener-supporters, would have led to a period of relative peace and harmony at the long embattled Pacifica radio station.
However, as one of the founders of Save KPFA in 1993, and later of Take Back KPFA in 1995, following mass purges of radical programmers by station management, I remained deeply troubled.
Within the station, those who had collaborated with Pacifica and KPFA management during those purges and who had arranged sweetheart sinecures for themselves in return, are still running the station behind the scenes, never having been called to account for their cowardly behavior.
What I never would have imagined, however, is that as a result of the "democratization" of the station's governing process, the chair of the Personnel Committee which oversees the General Manager Hire Subcommittee would be the chief financial officer of KSFO, the right-wing San Francisco radio station that advertises itself as Hot Talk Radio, but whose racist, anti-immigrant, homophobic commentaries have led to it being slammed by its critics, and rightly so, as Hate Talk Radio.
Marnie Tattersall, an elected member of KPFA's Local Station Board (LSB), is the controller of four ABC-Disney-Capitol Cities radio stations in the Bay Area, including the more mainstream KGO. On the statement that she submitted to the listeners when running for the board, there was no mention of KSFO.
While one must wonder how KPFA listeners would come to elect an apparatchik of one of the most reactionary media conglomerates to the board in the first place, we must assume they never would have done so if they knew she also worked for a station where Rush Limbaugh, Fox's Sean Hannity and Laura Schlesinger are the familiar voices, as was Michael Savage before he was recently lured away by KNEW.
It is also realistic to assume that had such an individual been hired by Pacifica or KPFA management during the struggles of the late Nineties, there would have been mass protests at the station.
But, ironically, those who have criticized Tattersall and expressed their concern about the power she has attained on the board, have been either ignored or marginalized, and, as in the not too distant past, no discussion of this situation on the KPFA airwaves can be anticipated. Hence, the need for this letter to every Bay activist concerned with the future of the station and of Pacifica.
At the moment, the station's General Manager Hire Committee, at Tattersall's direction, will be making its recommendations behind closed doors this coming Sunday, October 10th, keeping the process completely out of sight of the KPFA community.
It's not too late for listeners to demand that before any decision is made, they must be given an opportunity to view and question the candidates.
In the spirit of democracy as well as Pacifica's founding mission, listeners must call on the KPFA Local Station Board to have the finalists for the general manager position appear at a public meeting to present their vision of that mission, and answer questions from listeners and staff. There can be no excuse for not doing so.
Then, the station board has to figure a way for the listeners to actually know who, exactly, is asking for their votes and why in future LSB elections.
Certainly, the 10,000 people who turned out in Berkeley in 1999 to support the locked down station and those thousands of listeners who have loyally kept KPFA alive for the past 55 years deserve nothing less.

The full Local Station Board _will_ learn the identities of all the finalists, and will _not_ choose KPFA's next general manager. Under Pacifica's Bylaws ( http://kpfa.org/lsb/index.php?page=bylaws ), the Local Station Board must submit a pool of three applicants for the Executive Director of Pacifica to choose among. The purpose of this meeting is for the hiring subcommittee to present its recommendations for that pool, and for the full Board to either accept them, reject them, or ask the subcommittee for more information so it (the LSB) can decide at a later date. The actual hire will be made by Pacifica ED Dan Coughlin.
Confidentiality agreements are standard in most hiring processes. They exist to protect the privacy of the job applicant, and to shield the employer from liability. The most obvious example is an applicant who has not told his or her present employer that s/he's looking for a new job. If word gets back to the boss, s/he could be fired.
While it's possible to set up a completely open hiring process (whether it's advisable is another discussion), it is very problematic to tell applicants you will protect their confidentiality, then change your mind halfway through. The time to discuss an open hiring process would've been back in March, before the current procedure was approved by a supermajority of the elected board.
Riva Enteen, the only board member to sign on to this statement, was not permitted to vote on the resolution that established the current hiring process (under Robert's Rules, the chair may only vote when doing so would create or break a tie). However, as part of the Personnel Committee, she helped draft it. And, as a member of the hiring committee, she signed a confidentiality agreement that binds her to keep confidential "any and all information in these applications" on pain of "removal from my elected position."
The Local Station Board recently suspended Enteen from the Hiring Subcommittee following allegations she breached that confidentiality agreement and later attempted to schedule candidate interviews on her own, without the rest of the committee.

On July 24th, the Local Station Board had already begun the discussion of Enteen's conduct that would eventually lead to her suspension from the hiring subcommittee. You can see it on their agenda here: http://www.kpfa.org/lsb/docs.php?type=agenda&id=15&doc=13 (you can't see the actual discussion in the minutes because that part of the meeting was in closed session).
In fact, the Board's Personnel Committee had already voted eight to one to remove Enteen from its General Manager Hiring Subcommittee earlier that week. Enteen refused to recognize that decision, claiming (correctly, as I read the record) that since the full Local Station Board had created the General Manager Hiring Subcommittee, only the full LSB could remove one of its members.
The point, however, is that Enteen already knew she was in hot water for breaching confidentiality, and seized on the opportunity to take the issue of her misconduct and dress it up as a political battle over openness in governance.
Also, please note that the Mark Norton whose web site is referenced above is Riva Enteen's partner. To his credit, he discloses that fact in one of his articles.

Either they intentionally misled the people this statement was sent to, or they signed the statement on the basis of misleading information that was fed to them.
Riva Enteen is the only signatory who was actually involved in the hiring process; if she didn't actively mislead other signatories, then it was at least incumbent upon her to set the record straight when she was asked to sign this letter.

The reasoning used is that the candidate gave blanket permission for their application to be made public, but the committee indicated that the confidentiality agreement, which Enteen developed and signed agreement to, applied to members of the committee regardless of what the candidates may say or do.
Enteen's supporters claim that only the LSB can remove her, while the rest indicate the power of a committee to act to protect the sanctity of the committee rules on confidentiality applies.
At no time was there an effort to remove Enteen from the LSB that has made it to the table, nor as Chair of the LSB. Only the LSB or the Pacifica National Board has that power.
For the moment, as a compromise because of the problem in interpreting Robert's Rules in conjunction with the by-laws, Enteen is suspended from the GM Hiring Subcommittee until the Pacifica National Board can determine which answer is Pacifica policy.

Nowhere in Mr. "Real Fact's" statement does he directly address the evidence presented by facts nerd. He simply slams it as nonsense with no supporting facts of his own. The truth simply doesn't matter for people like Real Facts. It is his way or the highway. The truth be damned. The fact is Enteen signed a written confidentiality agreement, then promptly violated the same. She has admitted to the breach. She wasn't shoved aside. She was dealt with in the manner laid out in the confidentiality agreement: A breach means you forfeit your right to remain on the committee. Enteen has shown herself to be an egotistical, dishonorable and self-serving member of the board and her actions in regards to the hiring committee are only the tip of the iceberg. You can continue to make excuses for her childish and selfish behavior if you wish Real Facts. We're not having any of it.

Again, Mr. Realfacts simply refuses to deal with the truth. Enteen violated a written confidentiality agreement by her own admission. If you don't believe it, ask her. Tattersal never violated confidentiality, as she never spoke a candidates name in public, or expressed an opinion about any candidates in public. If you can provide evidence to the contrary, we'd love to see it. If not, please quit wasting everyone's time with your lies. Enteen did both of these things, again at her own admission. As for your question about an open GM hire, it's irrelevant because all sides in this issue rightly agreed that the GM candidate's confidentiality should be protected. Anyone with any experience in the working world, or half an ounce of professionalism, realizes that an applicant's confidentiality protects both that applicant and the organization to which, he or she is applying. Setting up the applicant for an inquisition from the public would be insane and unfair to the applicants. When the public voted for LSB candidates, they entrusted them with being able to consider the community's interests in the hiring process. I must reiterate that it is crazy for an applicant to be cross-examined by 50 different people, many of whom only have the thinnest grip on their sanity. It is a documented fact that Enteen admitted breaching the confidentiality agreement. Ask anyone who served on that committee, including Enteen. Enteen issued an apology to the same. That is simply the truth. Tattersal, unwittingly sent a reply to an email regarding the hiring committee situation to a list which included an ex-officio member of the LSB. Unlike Enteen, she did not reveal candidates names publicly, or express any opinions about any candidates; two things Enteen did, again to her own admission. As for a so-called open hire, whatever happened at LA is their business. We'll see what comes of that, given their recent history, probably not much good. The applicants to the KPFA GM position applied with the assurance of a confidentiality agreement being in place, an agreement that was agreed to ahead of time by all interested parties (inclucing Enteen). The "community" elected LSB members to act on their behalf -- suddenly that's not good enough. This so-called open process issue, has nothing to do with openness and everything to do with Enteen and her allies not being involved in the process. As for only being interested in attacking her, I'll remind you that it was you who first mentioned her and lied about her being driven off the board without giving any background or context. I'm sure that had she not been removed because of her own corrupt behavior, and her allies had not removed themselves, we'd be hearing nothing of this open-hire nonsense. KPFA is a progressive organization, but it is also a professional organization that's in tune with worker's rights, high among those rights are worker's rights to privacy. The posting where you allege that I named Bennet, or anyone else, as a candidate for the GM position is still there for all to read. Nowhere is anyone named as a GM candidate. Anyone who's interested can read it for themselves. You're amazing Real Facts, you'll even continue to lie in the face of incontrovertible evidence. Please cite the sentence in my posting where anyone is identified as a candidate for the GM position. That was your doing. Still, even if a candidate had been named, the hiring process is over and the candidates in question have already been named in postings all over the internet from people like you. On the so-called open hire issue, I've alread addressed that. But I guess it didn't sink in the first time. Everyone involved, including your beloved Enteen, rightly agreed to sign on to a confidentiality agreement, to protect the privacy of the candidates and protect the station from liability. Who violated whatever confidentiality agreement may seem critical to Real Facts and Real Deal, but I would bet that most KPFA listeners/contributers/volunteeers (like myself) feel as i do that this is all a bunch of petty squabbling by some unimaginative people with personality issues. Campanella helped form an African-American broadcast and print news service in college. He created his own studio "Director's Circle Filmworks" giving minority and women film makers an avenue to showcase their work in the closed Hollywood system. He has broadcast management experience as a media executive with CBS. He was Production Chief at the country's first and only African-American owned TV network, where he promoted black and minority themed film and TV productions, often ignored by the mainstream. How many times have *you* posted here? -- and under how many different aliases?
All the definitions that Anderson used to describe a blowhard apply to him in spades. Who is the one always calling radio programs to present himself as the answer man? That would be JA. Know-it-all, heal thyself. I can hardly think of a program on KPFA that hasn't been subjected to the inevitable "Joseph from Berkeley" call, with all of the glib and facile answers to the world's ills one could ever want.
How interesting that the alleged "victim" in not one, but two, recent public screaming matches, and who suggests violence on the part of his "attackers" is Joseph Anderson? In the last few months, he's been the "innocent victim" of a barely 5-foot woman (from whom reports say two women and another man had to pull him back) and a 70-year-old man all accounts say JA was also screaming at.

These are critical times for our nation. I encourage Pacifica network stations to fulfill a significant multi-dimensional function in their respective communities. KPFA should have a General Manager who can bring progressive visionary leadership and organizational guidance to Pacifica's flagship station.
I have known Roy Campanella II for over a decade. He has the type of leadership ability and organizational experience to be an exceptional General Manager. During my 1988 Presidential primary campaign, Roy was instrumental in procuring and editing a music video highlighting my candidacy. He came aboard the project at my request. I needed someone who could jump-start the project and bring decisive creative leadership without offending the individuals who were already involved. Roy did exactly that; he displayed a highly collaborative work ethic along with a coherent creative vision.
The resulting campaign video was screened at the Democratic convention to great success. I have no doubt that he can bring the same interpersonal people skills and management expertise to the job of General Manager of KPFA.
Although his professional background is film and television production, he can certainly adapt quickly to the radio medium. In fact, his impressive filmmaking background could be an asset to KPFA and Pacifica. He has expressed to me an interest in helping to develop and expand Pacifica's tremendous archive so that it gains more exposure on a global scale.
In addition, Roy's extensive knowledge and commitment to alternative news sources, progressive organizations, and multicultural issues is the kind of special strength needed in a General Manager. The role of General Manager of KPFA is a unique opportunity. In contrast to just submitting a standard resume I'm providing you with a more revealing personal and professional narrative. First, I want you to understand the reasons why a successful filmmaker like myself is interested in joining KPFA. I want to devote at least the next 3 - 6 years of my life to a media organization with the mission of Pacifica. My creative talent, progressive-humanist beliefs, management skills, and wide-ranging media background can benefit KPFA and Pacifica. If African Americans with my level of expertise and deep personal commitment don't serve our movement how can the Left build a strong, resourceful, multi-cultural leadership base? As we face the very real threat of growing authoritarianism and one party rule within our nation this is a critically important time to serve KPFA and its listeners. Finally, being part of KPFA will be fun, challenging, and personally rewarding.
Education
Harvard College, Cambridge, MA. Major: Cultural Anthropology; Minor: Film, Photography, Visual Studies. Cum Laude, honors graduate. Anthropology made it possible to satisfy my interest in various cultures around the world and the study of Humankind from pre-history to the present. As a student activist I was a member of the Student Organization for Black Unity (SOBU) -- a national student organization of Pan-Africanists. International News Editor - SOBU's publication, African World. We supported Black, Chicano, and Women's study programs on college campuses, and national liberation struggles around the world, especially Vietnam, South Africa, Angola, and Mozambique. My activist work and research studies provided a practical, real world understanding of struggles for peace, equality, and social justice. (1966 - 1970)
Work Experience
After graduation I continued as the International News Editor (African World) for three years. At Harvard I became a Teaching Fellow in the newly formed Black Studies Department, conducting a full course seminar -- Mass Media and the Black Community. I used the class to critique both corporate and independent media, including numerous guest speakers, such as the Editor of Muhammad Speaks. One class project examined creating an independent radio station. (1970 - 1971)
WGBH-TV, Boston. Associate Producer/Filmmaker for a weekly public affairs program, Say Brother. As Filmmaker (director-cameraman-editor) I created numerous documentary film segments focusing on political and cultural events, such as racial discrimination, prison life, a Black dance company, visiting national liberation spokespeople, and African Liberation Day. My documentary about the first African Liberation Day march and rally in Washington, D.C. was selected by Amiri Baraka as one of the ten best films of the year in the New York Times. (1971 - 1972)
Malcolm X Liberation University, Greensboro, N.C. Chairman, Communications Dept. My political documentary work, especially in connection with African Liberation Day, resulted in an invitation from Howard Fuller to join the teaching staff of a small, under-funded independent Pan-African educational project. I left the promising and secure career at WGBH-TV because of the school's central role in building a viable, progressive Pan-African movement. Since graduating from Harvard my primary focus was on using my filmmaking skills and media experience to expand our political and cultural base. Unfortunately, nine months after joining the faculty the educational project lost its funding. I learned that no one in leadership had a "Plan B" and everyone would going their separate ways. While I didn't harbor any regrets or ill will toward anyone this experience signaled a turning point in my life. Students and staff were caught in a harsh survival mode because no one had developed a contingency plan. (1972)
CBS News Division, New York. Film/Video Editor. After a few months of searching for work I landed a position at CBS. My political work continued on a volunteer basis, especially regarding the anti-Apartheid struggle. I helped organize demonstrations and contribute articles to Harlem's Amsterdam News. As an editor I became active in my union local. The work problems faced by Black employees lead me to organize with a small group of co-workers the broadcast industries first Black Employees Association. A year later, NBC's Black employees would follow. Our lobbying efforts resulted in modest but tangible gains within many of the CBS divisions. (1973 - 1977)
Columbia University, Graduate School of Business. CBS Fellowship. I entered a company-wide competition offering a fully paid fellowship, including salary. An independent panel from Columbia University made the selections based on the GSAT scores, recommendations, and career essay. It's important to note that for me acquiring an MBA meant developing my ability to manage and understand organizations. I didn't suddenly become an uncritical champion of rapacious capitalism. From the Graduate Schools of Business and Journalism I received the Louis G. Cowan award for excellence in Media Management. During this period I also wrote, directed, and produced three independent short films with grants from The National Endowment for the Arts, The American Film Institute, and as an Artist In Residence with WNET-TV. In addition, I became a founding board member of the Black Filmmakers Foundation. (1977 - 1979)
CBS Entertainment, Los Angeles. Programming Executive, TV Movies and Mini-Series. I relocated to Los Angeles and began work as a liaison between producers and the network. I worked on a creative portfolio of about 25 TV movie and mini-series projects with an aggregate production value of more than $50 million. I was helpful in developing a mini-series project about Paul Robeson, but other projects based on adaptations of works by James Baldwin, Ralph Ellison, Toni Morrison, and Richard Wright were rejected along with numerous historically significant dramas -- the Haitian revolution, Wounded Knee, Harlem's WWI 369th regiment, the assassination of Malcolm X, and the experiences of Black troops in Vietnam. These were the type of socially conscious films I wanted to make. My work as a board member of the Black Filmmakers Foundation continued and I became a Contributing Editor to the Black Film Review. (1979 - 1981)
Freelance Directing-Producing-Writing. Los Angeles. I began my career on a wide variety of independent, studio, and network film/TV projects, such as episodes of Lou Grant, Knots Landing, and Our House. I also became a founding board member of the Black Television Workshop (BTW). Our legal counsel had secured an FCC license for BTW to operate a non-commercial television station in Los Angeles. It would be the nation's second black owned and operated non-commercial station. . I considered this to be a very promising situation but within a year it became clear that BTW's legal counsel had the intention of selling the station once it had gone on air. He had stacked the board with surrogates. 4 year struggle. Myself and one board member. We used our term to try to convince the other members that a potentially valuable resource for the community was being wasted. Didn't have enough votes. FCC revoked the license. Two reasons - when Pacifica faced its crisis I was reminded of the bitter struggle I had fought and lost. You can imagine the empathy I had for those fighting to keep Pacifica a listener sponsored community based network and the eventual satisfaction I experienced when learning that you had been victorious. It literally brought tears of joy. My experience with BTW and the story of Pacifica's struggle have provided me with a powerful life lesson that I can bring to the role of General Manager of KPFA. My commitment to the Pacifica mission and listener-subscriber based democracy is deep and unwavering. In addition, I spent three months as a media consultant to the Nigerian government. I evaluated their state-run broadcast industry and developed a proposal to create the Nigerian Film Institute. (1982 - 1986)
Freelance Directing-Producing-Writing. Los Angeles. I continued my creative work on a wide variety of projects, such as a PBS documentary about racial stereotyping in Hollywood films, two CBS TV movies, and episodes of Frank's Place, I'll Fly Away, and Boston Public. I also produced a political spot for Rev. Jesse Jackson's presidential campaign of 1988 and did a public service spot for Drug Free America. On a volunteer basis I spent a decade, 1983 - 1993, as a media analyst for the Los Angeles Black Media Coalition, critiquing problems within corporate media and developing a handbook for media watchdogs to use as a resource guide. I directed a PBS television movie, Brother Future, which earned awards from the prestigious Directors Guild of America (DGA) as well as the Columbus International Film Festival. During part of this period I served as the Co-Chair of the DGA's African American Steering Committee. From 1999-2000, I produced ten original cable features for Black Entertainment Television (BET). The Black Filmmakers Hall of Fame film competition honored me in 2000 with an award for directing and producing Masquerade; a popular, critically praised feature made on a budget of only $800,000. My creative talent, progressive-humanist beliefs, management skills, and wide-ranging media background can benefit KPFA and Pacifica. If African Americans with my level of expertise and deep personal commitment don't serve our movement how can the Left build a strong, resourceful, multi-cultural leadership base? As we face the very real threat of growing authoritarianism and one party rule within our nation this is a critically important time to serve KPFA and its listeners. Finally, being part of KPFA will be fun, challenging, and personally rewarding.
Education
Harvard College, Cambridge, MA. Major: Cultural Anthropology; Minor: Film, Photography, Visual Studies. Cum Laude, honors graduate. Anthropology made it possible to satisfy my interest in various cultures around the world and the study of Humankind from pre-history to the present. As a student activist I was a member of the Student Organization for Black Unity (SOBU) -- a national student organization of Pan-Africanists. International News Editor - SOBU's publication, African World. We supported Black, Chicano, and Women's study programs on college campuses, and national liberation struggles around the world, especially Vietnam, South Africa, Angola, and Mozambique. My activist work and research studies provided a practical, real world understanding of struggles for peace, equality, and social justice. (1966 - 1970)
Work Experience
After graduation I continued as the International News Editor (African World) for three years. At Harvard I became a Teaching Fellow in the newly formed Black Studies Department, conducting a full course seminar -- Mass Media and the Black Community. I used the class to critique both corporate and independent media, including numerous guest speakers, such as the Editor of Muhammad Speaks. One class project examined creating an independent radio station. (1970 - 1971)
WGBH-TV, Boston. Associate Producer/Filmmaker for a weekly public affairs program, Say Brother. As Filmmaker (director-cameraman-editor) I created numerous documentary film segments focusing on political and cultural events, such as racial discrimination, prison life, a Black dance company, visiting national liberation spokespeople, and African Liberation Day. My documentary about the first African Liberation Day march and rally in Washington, D.C. was selected by Amiri Baraka as one of the ten best films of the year in the New York Times. (1971 - 1972)
Malcolm X Liberation University, Greensboro, N.C. Chairman, Communications Dept. My political documentary work, especially in connection with African Liberation Day, resulted in an invitation from Howard Fuller to join the teaching staff of a small, under-funded independent Pan-African educational project. I left the promising and secure career at WGBH-TV because of the school's central role in building a viable, progressive Pan-African movement. Since graduating from Harvard my primary focus was on using my filmmaking skills and media experience to expand our political and cultural base. Unfortunately, nine months after joining the faculty the educational project lost its funding. I learned that no one in leadership had a "Plan B" and everyone would going their separate ways. While I didn't harbor any regrets or ill will toward anyone this experience signaled a turning point in my life. Students and staff were caught in a harsh survival mode because no one had developed a contingency plan. (1972)
CBS News Division, New York. Film/Video Editor. After a few months of searching for work I landed a position at CBS. My political work continued on a volunteer basis, especially regarding the anti-Apartheid struggle. I helped organize demonstrations and contribute articles to Harlem's Amsterdam News. As an editor I became active in my union local. The work problems faced by Black employees lead me to organize with a small group of co-workers the broadcast industries first Black Employees Association. A year later, NBC's Black employees would follow. Our lobbying efforts resulted in modest but tangible gains within many of the CBS divisions. (1973 - 1977)
Columbia University, Graduate School of Business. CBS Fellowship. I entered a company-wide competition offering a fully paid fellowship, including salary. An independent panel from Columbia University made the selections based on the GSAT scores, recommendations, and career essay. It's important to note that for me acquiring an MBA meant developing my ability to manage and understand organizations. I didn't suddenly become an uncritical champion of rapacious capitalism. From the Graduate Schools of Business and Journalism I received the Louis G. Cowan award for excellence in Media Management. During this period I also wrote, directed, and produced three independent short films with grants from The National Endowment for the Arts, The American Film Institute, and as an Artist In Residence with WNET-TV. In addition, I became a founding board member of the Black Filmmakers Foundation. (1977 - 1979)
CBS Entertainment, Los Angeles. Programming Executive, TV Movies and Mini-Series. I relocated to Los Angeles and began work as a liaison between producers and the network. I worked on a creative portfolio of about 25 TV movie and mini-series projects with an aggregate production value of more than $50 million. I was helpful in developing a mini-series project about Paul Robeson, but other projects based on adaptations of works by James Baldwin, Ralph Ellison, Toni Morrison, and Richard Wright were rejected along with numerous historically significant dramas -- the Haitian revolution, Wounded Knee, Harlem's WWI 369th regiment, the assassination of Malcolm X, and the experiences of Black troops in Vietnam. These were the type of socially conscious films I wanted to make. My work as a board member of the Black Filmmakers Foundation continued and I became a Contributing Editor to the Black Film Review. (1979 - 1981)
Freelance Directing-Producing-Writing. Los Angeles. I began my career on a wide variety of independent, studio, and network film/TV projects, such as episodes of Lou Grant, Knots Landing, and Our House. I also became a founding board member of the Black Television Workshop (BTW). Our legal counsel had secured an FCC license for BTW to operate a non-commercial television station in Los Angeles. It would be the nation's second black owned and operated non-commercial station. . I considered this to be a very promising situation but within a year it became clear that BTW's legal counsel had the intention of selling the station once it had gone on air. He had stacked the board with surrogates. 4 year struggle. Myself and one board member. We used our term to try to convince the other members that a potentially valuable resource for the community was being wasted. Didn't have enough votes. FCC revoked the license. Two reasons - when Pacifica faced its crisis I was reminded of the bitter struggle I had fought and lost. You can imagine the empathy I had for those fighting to keep Pacifica a listener sponsored community based network and the eventual satisfaction I experienced when learning that you had been victorious. It literally brought tears of joy. My experience with BTW and the story of Pacifica's struggle have provided me with a powerful life lesson that I can bring to the role of General Manager of KPFA. My commitment to the Pacifica mission and listener-subscriber based democracy is deep and unwavering. In addition, I spent three months as a media consultant to the Nigerian government. I evaluated their state-run broadcast industry and developed a proposal to create the Nigerian Film Institute. (1982 - 1986)
Freelance Directing-Producing-Writing. Los Angeles. I continued my creative work on a wide variety of projects, such as a PBS documentary about racial stereotyping in Hollywood films, two CBS TV movies, and episodes of Frank's Place, I'll Fly Away, and Boston Public. I also produced a political spot for Rev. Jesse Jackson's presidential campaign of 1988 and did a public service spot for Drug Free America. On a volunteer basis I spent a decade, 1983 - 1993, as a media analyst for the Los Angeles Black Media Coalition, critiquing problems within corporate media and developing a handbook for media watchdogs to use as a resource guide. I directed a PBS television movie, Brother Future, which earned awards from the prestigious Directors Guild of America (DGA) as well as the Columbus International Film Festival. During part of this period I served as the Co-Chair of the DGA's African American Steering Committee. From 1999-2000, I produced ten original cable features for Black Entertainment Television (BET). The Black Filmmakers Hall of Fame film competition honored me in 2000 with an award for directing and producing Masquerade; a popular, critically praised feature made on a budget of only $800,000. Most recently, I've been developing TV and feature films projects about such subjects as Lena Horne, the Harlem Renaissance, Black Reconstruction, and Ralph Ellison's Invisible Man. (1986 - 2004)

It's fine when an anonymous poster asserts or discusses facts that can be independently verified, but anonymous assertions of unverifiable fact are worthless. And when those anonymous assertions are personal attacks on someone, they should be deleted by the editors of this site!
I'm fine with people criticizing JA's polemical style or arguing against his assertions, but allegations of violence aren't OK, unless made by people who claim to be witnesses to such violence and who are willing to identify themselves and answer questions. Anonymous witnesses may be acceptable to the NATO court trying Milosevic, but they shouldn't be acceptable on indymedia.
Regarding the incident between JA and Bensky at La Peña, several people who were standing nearby said that Bensky was the offending party. While JA could use a thicker skin, it would have to be fairly thick to keep out a prick (pun intended) like Bensky.

I'm fine with people criticizing JA's polemical style or arguing against his assertions, but allegations of violence aren't OK, unless made by people who claim to be witnesses to such violence and who are willing to identify themselves and answer questions. Anonymous witnesses may be acceptable to the NATO court trying Milosevic, but they shouldn't be acceptable on indymedia.
Regarding the incident between JA and Bensky at La Peña, several people who were standing nearby said that Bensky was the offending party. While JA could use a thicker skin, it would have to be fairly thick to keep out a prick (pun intended) like Bensky.

with all due respect to all the vociferous opinions, comments, strutting of intellect, humor and ascerbic wit, I must say: if anyone worries that community radio is missing an entire generation look no further than this thread to wonder why... could you folks gaze at your navels any more relentlessly? the public wants good radio, not the agonizing hair splitting that is what is left of the "movement"... KPFA's relevance beyond the dyed in the wool now 50s/60 year olds and as a lightning rod for people on threads like this is very questionable in my opinion. I'm not talking about historic or intellectual relevance but ACTUAL day to day... too many people with agendas are now running the show .. that would be both behind the scenes & in forums like this. I've never seen a great deal of difference from the so-called "power hungry pimps" as someone immemorably referenced in yet another tired group thread and the subsidized folks who have been on the other side of the wagon from management leading this sad tattered train to the ground.
