Support Cheesecake Factory Workers!

Wednesday, September 29, 2004

4:30 PM - 6:30 PM
Event Type:

Organizer/Author:
Sonya Mehta
Location Details:
Union Square, in front of Macy's (off Powell BART)

Current and former employees of the Cheesecake Factory say the company owes them more than $1 million in back wages. Supervisors Chris Daly and Matt Gonzalez will join them and Young Workers United for a rally Sept. 29 at 4:30 p.m. in Union Square to demand the company pay up—and commit to fair and legal operations in the future.

More than 140 workers filed claims with the California Division of Labor Standards Enforcement against the Calabasas Hills-based Cheesecake Factory for illegally denying them breaks prior to 2003. Now they and Young Workers United want the company to negotiate a settlement of these claims that includes both back wages to compensate for the missed breaks and a legally binding Code of Conduct to protect workers in the future.

After the rally, current and former employees of the Cheesecake Factory will deliver a petition to management in support of this settlement demand signed by more than 100 workers. They say a thriving, multi-million dollar operation like Cheesecake Factory can afford to give them a fair slice. Supervisors Gonzalez and Daly will accompany them.

Young Workers United is a worker center that organizes low-wage and unemployed young workers in the service sector of San Francisco and played a key role in passing the minimum wage initiative in 2003.
