9/1 honor slain sexworkers, noon today, Ellis & Gough, SF
Demo for seworkers' rights, Sept. 1, SF, noon, Wed. (today).
SWOP and COYOTE will honor murdered prostitutes, Angel Lopez & Toni Green. [ http://www.swop-usa.org ]
Sex workers and advocates will hold a press conference and memorial
[at noon, Sept. 1, Wed, in SF at Ellis & Gough, SF,]
at the site where police found the body of Angel Lopez in San Francisco, to remind the public that prostitutes are regularly murdered.
"The laws that criminalize prostitutes stigmatize them so that sick people can abuse them. The Green River killer in Seattle said that `he was doing police a favor,` by killing prostitutes. This has got to end. Violence against prostitutes is violence against all women," said Robyn Few Executive Director of the Sex Workers Outreach Project (SWOP).
The event will commemorate Angel Lopez, as well as Toni Green and the eleven prostitutes who have been murdered (so far) across the country by the truck stop killer.
"One of the main motivations for the initiative in Berkeley is to address issues of violence against prostitutes. As criminals, prostitutes basically have no protection from police. Decriminalization can change that," said Carol Leigh of COYOTE.
Toni Green was murdered in San Francisco on 13 August 2004, in brutal fashion. Her hands were duct taped, and she was beaten and sexually assaulted.
Prostitutes across the southern part of the United States are being picked up at truck stops and murdered. Police have developed a sketch which is being circulated now. Angel Lopez was found murdered on the morning of 1 September 1993 at the corner of Ellis and Gough, SF.
