Black and White Images of the Struggle for Marriage Equality

by Bill Hackwell (hckwll [at] cs.com)
The struggle for same sex marriages hits the streets of San Francisco after reactionary ruling by the California Supreme Court.

The struggle for marriage equality entered a new phase after the California Supreme Court with a stroke of a pen voided over 4,000 same sex marriages performed at San Francisco City Hall last February.

The cruel and strong response did not only rule that the city defied state law but throw out the marriages as well. By 5pm Thursday hundreds of couples, who had been married during that time, along with family, friends and supporters gathered at Harvey Milk Plaza. By the time the march hit Market Street the crowd was well over a thousand people. The tone of the march to city hall was strong and militant and louder than most marches out of the Castro. While this was a legal setback in the struggle for marriage equality, people in the march were much more defiant than defeated
