Community members are invited to join prominent local activists Paul George and Michael Closson in debating the question of whether anti-war activists should oppose or support a new military draft.
With talk of a renewed military draft in the air - and legislation for a new draft sitting in Congress - a disagreement is brewing within activist circles. Michael Closson, Executive Director of Acterra, says a new draft will build opposition to the continuing occupation of Iraq, much as it did during the Vietnam War, and will spread the burden of the conflict more equitably than the current “economic draft”. Paul George, Director of Peninsula Peace and Justice Center, opposes a new draft because he believes it will serve only to fuel the current and future conflicts, and because it stands in stark contrast to the ideals of the peace movement. The discussion will be moderated by Elliot Margolies, Executive Producer at the Community Media Center.
Free; sponsored by Peninsula Peace and Justice Center.
