7/21, 7pm, meeting at Gill Tract

by Urban Roots
Since 1945, various UC Berkeley faculty members have used this land as a site for research in biological control, the practice of controlling pest populations by creating a system with stable populations of natural enemies. In the past ten years the Gill Tract has, at times, been utilized as an urban farm, employing at-risk youth and providing food for local non-profits and community members. Currently, UCB faculty members use the Gill Tract for agricultural-related research.
Dear Urban Roots members and supporters,

There will be a Potluck at the Gill Tract this upcoming wednesday at 7:00, July 21st. The evenings at the fields are really quite beautiful and we hope you'll join us.

This summer has been both challenging and inspiring. Our summer garden
is
planted and we are conducting some really good experiments controlling
pest
problems without pesticides. Earlier in the summer the kindergarden
classes
from OceanView Elementary joined us to plant our pumpkin patch and we
have
been teaching a weekly farming and food education course to a group of
kids
from a summer camp. Unfortunately, though, just weeks ago the UC
Regents
passed the general plan for the development of the Gill Tract inspite
of
letters of protest by a rather large portion of the Albany/Berkeley
community,
in particular Urban Roots members.

Many of us have been involved with the Gill Tract in a variety of ways at a
variety of times, some of us may never have even been to the Gill Tract
yet
understand its importance and potential. We hope this potluck can be a
way
for all of us for whom the Gill Tract is a meaningful and special place
to
come together to see the fields in their summer glory and to experience
this
rare and wonderful urban farm. And we also hope to talk about how the
community can remain involved in the development process and how we can
work
together, in what ever ways we can, to further the Urban Roots vision
of
promoting education about sustainable agriculture, a healthy urban
future in
Albany, and the creation of a Center for Urban Agriculture at the Gill
Tract.

Contact us with any questions and please check out the website if you
havent
see it in a while, we have a new version of the Urban Roots Broshure.
Also,
please forward this email on to any and all who might be interested.

Looking forward to seeing you Wednesday,
The Gill Tract Team
