Demonstrate against the Patriot Act and government inspection of reading and internet activity.
Last week Representative Bernie Sander’s Freedom to Read Act was defeated by manipulation and skullduggery during a roll call vote in Congress. The library provision of the Patriot Act is one of the most controversial portions of the act. Known as Section 215, this portion of the Patriot Act gives the FBI power to monitor peoples’ reading, e-mail and internet use at public libraries without normal judicial authorization. Section 215 is one of the more blatant attempts to establish a climate of fear and undermine dissent.
San Francisco Chronicle writer Edward Epstein said in his article about the library provision on (7-9-04): The intense debate also provided a glimpse of the sharp battle expected in Congress next year when the overall Patriot Act must be renewed or lapse.”
