Peninsula Peace and Justice Center is organizing a protest rally with guest speakers Fernando Suarez del Solar and David Harris on June 30th, the day on which the U.S. is scheduled to hand over nominal power to the new Iraqi government.
Activists and community members will gather to demand that there be a complete pullout and a true end to the occupation. As it stands, the U.S. is slated to hand over control of some aspects of governance to the Iraqi Governing Council, but the U.S. military intends to remain in Iraq in large numbers for many years, and will be largely independent of the Iraqi government.
Featured speakers will be Fernando Suarez del Solar, a leading critic of the war whose son, U.S. marine Jesus Suarez, died in Iraq in Spring 2003; David Harris, a draft resister, leader in the student anti-war movement during Vietnam, and author of Our War; and Susan Galleymore, founder of MotherSpeak, an organization of U.S. and Iraqi mothers with children in the war. Music will be provided by the local band Annie and the Vets (a project of Veterans for Peace).
