Will the Crazy Right Shut Down a SF Art Gallery for showing art about Abu Ghraib Prison?
The same right that storm trooped Florida's election count and gave it to Bush has closed a gallery here in San Francisco. Is this a time to make a stand?

Last straw for art gallery
Threats and attacks over Iraq painting force owner out.

A North Beach art gallery owner who has been attacked and threatened for showing a controversial painting of American soldiers torturing Iraqi prisoners has decided to call it quits.
After having her life repeatedly threatened, her business egged and her face spat upon, Lori Haigh papered up the windows of her Powell Street gallery, Capobianco, on Tuesday.
"I'm totally disheartened by this -- this was my dream," Haigh said. "I felt like this was a legacy I could leave my children; that we had a gallery in North Beach."
The painting, titled "The Abuse" by East Bay artist Guy Colwell, shows Pfc. Lynndie England and another soldier smiling gleefully as they look upon a trio of naked, hooded Iraqi prisoners who are hooked up to electrical wires. In the background, a third American soldier is escorting a Muslim woman in a dress into the torture chamber.
The painting is black and white, except for American flag patches on the soldiers' uniforms, which appear to be splattered with blood.
A week ago, Haigh realized the nerve the painting had struck when she arrived at work to find the place egged and heaps of trash dumped at the gallery entrance. On her computer and voice mail were stinging messages calling her anti-American for showing the artwork.
Even after she took the painting out of the front window, she received six threats against her life. The last straw was when a man spat at her.
"He came walking in with a fisherman's cap and a fatigue jacket on and slowly made his way along the wall, looking at the pictures," she said. "Then he put his fists on my desk, put his face close to mine and spat. It was a real big loogie spit -- it was not a tiny spit."
As Haigh ran to the back of the gallery for some napkins, the man fled. Haigh has filed a police report on the incident.
Among the messages left on the gallery answering machine were, "You f---ing coward, you're dead" and "I think you need to get your gallery out of this neighborhood before you get hurt."
She said she felt like a "a sitting duck."
"I feel like my gallery had finally reached a level where I represent important Bay Area figures like Winton Smith and Guy Colwell," she said. "If I can't do that, then I don't want to have a gallery. This is a labor of love -- galleries don't make a lot of money."
On Saturday, Colwell will bring a U-haul to the gallery to retrieve his artwork, and a number of the artist's supporters are expected to turn out. The next show scheduled by famous punk rock and counterculture artist Winston Smith has been cancelled.
Smith, a North Beach resident, who was himself denounced in the 1980s when he was the album cover artist for punk rock band The Dead Kennedys, said it was "too bad" that the gallery was closing.
"It is a good location, and [Haigh] is a sincere person who is a hard worker and was going out of her way to feature local talent," Smith said.
Smith said he didn't understand why those outraged by the graphic depictions of torture in the Iraqi prison would have such a strong reaction to a painting depicting one artist's vision of the abuse.
"They must be anti-American if they despise freedom of speech so much, which is the essence of American freedom," he said.
Smith said Haigh was respectful of artists and didn't approach her gallery with a political agenda.
"If someone wanted to show a flag-waving solider in Iraq, she would say, 'You're the artists, do whatever you want,'" he said.
Haigh's lease runs out at the end of the year, and she hopes to sublet the gallery in the interim. She said she is disappointed with North Beach, which still clings to its reputation as an artists' haven developed in the 1950s. One figure from that era, poet and City Lights Bookstore co-owner Lawrence Ferlinghetti, stopped by the gallery to offer his support.
"I gave it a week and weighed the options," Haigh said. "Had I felt that there was enough support, my gallery wouldn't be closed down right now."
Book publisher Ron Turner, whose company Last Gasp published Colwell's art, was sympathetic.
"She got threats," he said. "She is a single woman with two kids trying to be a business woman and there are crazies threatening to roast her children."
Neighborhood activist Marc Bruno said he "felt terrible" when he heard what was going on at the gallery.
"I brought flowers there," he said. "I felt bad for her."

These apologists for torture won't stop at closing a little art gallery on Powell Street.
Does Ms. Haigh know of any leads related to the perpetrators who threatened her business and livelihood? Please email me, if possible. Thank you.
It's pathetic, It's soooooo bush-american, it's so brainless...
Keep up the good work and keep making art work which shows the truth about American policy and government

There appears to be a group of people who run everything, from cradle to grave. They have echelons of tag alongs who are like trolls acting on their behalf.
I have been through sheer hell to discover the truth about America and I have concluded we are ruled by an elitist dictatorship with their own agenda, which is to conquer the world and all within.
The artist who was closed down is not alone. Throughout history we have had times like these. The South East is worse. The South West is like a Hitler dream now, with forced injections and false justice.
We are the television generation if you are 30 or older. Television is their tool of manipulation. I keep waiting for the Nazi types of America to seize all. You have heard this on Indy media before. Let us pray that if it gets worse that we have extinction of the human species.
I wonder if there are symbiotic creatures in some humans, much like a worm in the brain that has its own agendas. Our species is lost and imprisoned on planet earth, but I can not say that leaving planet earth would change things.

Its unfortunate to see that terrorism and extremism in our country has actually attacked our freedom of expression. I'd like to see that assho_le that destroyed and vadalized that gallery try to take on a person who is willing to fight back.
From what I've read about this incident it lookes like it had been organized by several people.

well, the right-wing ksfo/freepers in sf aren't all talk after all... they have successfully driven out this lady, it's time for us to stop talking too, we can't rely on the police to be serious about this we already know their stance on the iraq war, look what they did to the protesters in sf. 'regulators! mount up!'
I looked on the free republic but couldn't find anything near the surface, which doesn't mean that they aren't discussing this on some thread. I suspect that there is a mailing list out there where people organized it.
If you don't want to be treated like a traitor, don't side with traitors like Colwell.
Mobilize for battle? Since the majority of the armed forces are conservatives and I suspect pro 2nd amendment rights folks have one strapped on or handy do you silly lilly flower children really want to go there? ROFL
The "asshoes" that do and support these things make a mockery of the claim (which I never believed, anyway, because intolerant Americans/Patriot Act are more of a threat to freedom than Saddam ever was) that "our brave men and women are over there protecting our freedom". If they are, there are millions of treasonous asshoes HERE who are working to UNDERMINE that freedom, and impose their own fascist, anti-American views on the rest of us. It's time to expose these COWARDLY HYPOCRITES for what they are, and those who oppose this war (because they love what their country used to stand for, among other reasons) should seriously consider arming to protect themselves and their families. Those Americans who oppose this invasion/war may be less blood-thirsty and violent than the ignorant and violent flag-wavers who allow media puppets and radio entertainers to dictate their political philosophy, but they should seriously consider arming nevertheless, as deterrence against these conscienceless fascists. Neo-nazi ANTI-FREEDOM TERRORISTS cannot be trusted to respect even women or small children (Iraqi or American), and for the good of the gene pool (and hence the future of America if not the world), it would be better to REMOVE these pimples from the face of freedom!!! "I may not agree with what you say, but I'll defend to the death your right to say it" does not apply for these asshoes-those days are gone, and the sounds of storm-troopers can be heard, as the clicking of the boots of fascism becomes louder and louder. Arm to defend the rights and lives of your children!! Study martial arts to kick fascist ass! (in self-defense, of course). Denounce these ANTI-FIRST AMENDMENT HYPOCRITES for the FASCISTS that they are, or before long they're won't be any "freedom" left to defend!!! Since, as one of the right wing wackos here pointed out, most military are conservatives/gun owners, and the anti-war camp is outgunned ("might makes right" mentality), it may be necessary to step up guerrila war tactics in the workplace and elsewhere, through legal/legislative means, etc. Let's combine our superior intelligence to defeat the ENEMIES OF FREEDOM (those who the Constitution referred to when they said "enemies foreign AND DOMESTIC"), so that freedom of speech can continue to exist in America, not just on paper, but in reality!!!! The soldiers who believe they are fighting for "our freedom" in Iraq would be embarrased, ashamed and disgusted by cowards who beat up women and make anonymous death threats against those supporting freedom in the arts, and elsewhere. Denounce them, expose their INCREDIBLE hypocrisy, make them look like the morons/imbeciles that they are, take from them their arrogant and IGNORANT claim that the only ones who love their country are those who want it to become an aggressor, killing thousands of innocent people, blackmailing the world, and violating the sovereignty and self-determination of other nations by imposing our will through economic and military warfare!!! Not only are they against the spirit of America and freedom, but they are making America LESS safe than it's ever been, by provoking legitmate hatred in others, and INCREASING (not decreasing!) the threat of terrorism here, as Israel has done very well with its continuing occupation, killing and humiliation of the Palestinian people in the West Bank and Gaza for the past 37 years....Fascism did NOT die with the end of WWII, it is alive and well in America, and we need to be extremely vigilant, and crush it at the grass roots level...not just by putting flowers in the barrels of their guns, but by taking the fight to the enemy, the American neo-fascist. It's time THEY were on the defensive for awhile...
I am an artist... I have no problem with the Guy Coldwell art that was displayed in the window. These are lame brain piece of crap people who did this abuse... no question about it...
My only problem is why this poor quality art was even on display in an art gallery in the first place. I would hope Guy Coldwell could produce better quality art than that excuse for an adolecent-quality drawing.
It really brings no emotion other than the desire to see real masterful artwork.

Surely you're not suggesting that "higher-quality"(like yours?) artwork would have prevented this attack?
if you are really an artist, it would behoove you to get out there and support this independent gallery's right to exist. Your ass is next. Stop being foolish.
And by the way, his name is Colwell, and he's pretty famous.

All I am saying is anyone with any artistic talent could have drawn that picture.
People always say that. The real question you should be asking yourself if you could draw a picture is why didn't you then?
I could technically build a house, if I applied myself, or learn advanced math or be an actress, if someone let me be in their play, or develop weight lifting ability. But, I couldn't take credit if I didn't actually go about doing these things.

...it is not me.
I don't feel anything for the subject matter. The photo's are enough anyway. Who needs to draw a pic about it. Just look at the photos.
Why would I want to waste my time on it? Unless I was there in person and I had a unique perspective I could lay down.
I am not going to tread those waters. I mean... why should I? To prove a point that has already been proven by photographs? If I did anything I would make a collage of the photos themselves but that's it (as pointless as that would be).
If my point were to shock people then yes... it would be easy but I don't feel that.
The photos ARE the artwork...they stand on their own as being shocking and timeless. Anything I did would only be a trite expression of them.
so... no thank you.

Since local artist Guy Colwell and gallery owner Lori Haigh are now being effectively silenced by thugs, perhaps the people of the Bay Area can find another way to disseminate free speech far and wide. The original image by Colwell, entitled "The Abuse", is at the link mentioned. Here is a modification, suitable for flyers and stickers.
An Injury to One is and Injury to All.

Obviously it is good enough to stir strong emotions in at least a few people. Art is not all about "pretty" or for that matter good (whatever that really means), it about gut responses. It is about happy, sad, and or disgusted.
It's not about whether the art is good, bad or indifferent. It's not about whether Saddam Hussein's thugs did the same thing as our soldiers.
The point is- that in a supposedly free country (which happens to have invaded another sovereign country), the freely expressed opposition of an artist is being silenced. Whether you are left or right, hate the art or love it, is irrelevant.

I think what has happened to Lori Haighs is what was happening in Nazi Germany with HITLER.... It is a direct assault on our freedom of speech. This administration has whipped up the fanatasim, fear, and politics of division. I support Lori... I could imagine this happening in some bo-punk Bushite midwestern town.... but not here in SF. I think it has alot to do with the fact that even here in SF the am radio waves are monopolized by Rush, Hanity, Savage, etc....... who preach the politics of hate and intollerance for any views but their own. Not only that, stations like Air America or any liberal voices are not allowed on the airwaves because of the neoconservative right wing take over of the media (Fox, Clearchannel, etc.....). Can I get a message of support to Lori Haigh.... I hope that the we can find who assaulted her and hold them accountable.... that is one jury I would love to sit on! Sincerely, Erin

Wake up and get with the Real World.
What happedned in the prison has happened for centuries during every war and will continue to happen. It just so happened there were cameras there.
Most liberals would be "appalled" at what we have to do to get information out of thugs and killers like the Iraqis being held at prisons throughout Iraq. We get data by any means necessary to protect cities like SFO and the people who live in them.
If you don't like it then go fight for Iraq or Al Queda.
We will continue to protect no matter what type of "Art" or whatever other form of ignorant protest the liberals come up with.
The painting demostrates just that. Ignorance on the part of the artist.
She has the right to do any thing she wants but must realize in the Real World, there will be repercussions.

by the Army's own admission, up to 90% of the people held prisoner were there by mistake.
The rest were patriots, defenders of their country from a foreign invader.
If you r country was invaded, wouldn't you do the same?

Those people in the prisons know who makes bombs and where bombs are.
If torturing 100 of them can save one American life, then that is what we need to do.
Perhaps someone should paint a picture of Americans in Iraq getting blown up by a makeshift bomb because we were too stupid to interogate prisoners in such a way to make them talk, whether it be through pain or humiliation.
We are not doing enough. Thank god there are no longer cameras allowed in prisons so now we can carry on as we were.
Maybe one should paint a picture of what SFO would look like after a chemical attack because we were "too compassionate" and did not interogate hard enough or long enough.
If any Iraqi's MIGHT know where a bomb is or when the next attack will be, we need to do anything it takes to find out IF and WHAT he/she knows....and like it or not....the interogations go on, just somewhere else, and, like it or not, we will continue to protect Americans in Iraq and in America.
That artist should be ashamed for painting what is the equivalent of spitting on an American servicemans face.
We should all spit on her face in return but are too busy protecting her right to spit on our faces.
If Karma is real, then she needs to watch her back...

First I want to express my disgust at what was done to this woman and her gallery by a few fools with large fists! I want to emphasize that word--FEW! Most of us in San Francisco do believe in freedom of expression and will continure to believe in it--and likewise believe in due process. What is happening in Abu Gharib prison has nothing to do with freedom or the American Dream but it does have everything to do with ignorance and brutality--unfortunate components of the human character. I believe that I as an American have the right to say what I feel, when I feel like it, where I feel like it--and when that changes--when I become afraid to do that--folks the dream is dead and gone. I smell a little fascism in the air! And this is how it begins--threats, forcing people to shut down their businesses--making them afraid for themselves--for their children. This is a sad and ugly day here in our fair city when someone gets away with this kind of intimidation. And I hope to god the real San Franciscans--all of us that came here to be a part of something bigger and better--will get off their buts and go out and make some noise over this one! Thomas Jefferson would turn in his grave! And one more comment! To the man who spoke of the so-called "real world"! Underneath your words I sense a good nazi waiting to bloom! It would only take a good talker like old adolf--with his one testicle--to convince you and all the good ole' boys that think what has been going on at Abu Gharib is just fine--it would only take a little sweat drop to get you to raise your right arm. And what's next? A fist in a woman's face? And by the way, The Patriot Act is a violation of the bill of rights and of the constitution--it is and was a mistake and now it's becoming clearly a problem for all of us! Let's NOT give up any more of our freedoms--and most of all let's not let a few unenlightened seed benders destroy what San Francisco is really about! FREEEEEEDOM to BE who we are! Let's support this woman--let's support the arts--let's support freedom of expression--and by god--lady--go back into your gallery, open your doors and try again. San Francisco is behind you and watching your back!

Wow, that's a *real* patriot speaking. Listen bub, my ancestors happened to have fought in the Revolutionary War for the right to freedom of speech, freedom of religion and all those other fine words. Even for people like you who are happy to have them yourself, but quick to snatch them away from people you happen to disagree with. They're only words unless you're civilized enough to guarantee human rights to all. Otherwise, hey- let's all go back to the jungle.
You should be ashamed of yourself for forgetting what thousands of other American servicemen have fought and died for: "I may disagree with you, but I'll defend to the death your right to say it."
Listen to yourself.... aah forget it. You're already in the jungle.

that painting looks great
just noticed this from the examiner:
"In the background, a third American soldier is escorting a Muslim woman in a dress into the torture chamber."
That's no ordinary Muslim woman. I believe it's supposed to be the image of Justice, often depicted as blindfolded in order to be impartial. Usually she holds scales. Ironically however, in the painting, she is handcuffed.

Those arabs sure do have small dicks
Not as small as the man who sent us there in the first place.
Anyhow, why do you care about the dick size of the people who sell you your oil?

Lori Haig and Guy Colwell should be "congratulating" themselves because they they hit the Faschist Bush Regime's open, raw "Nerve" with a Bull's Eye!!!
Since when is the expression of an unpleasant truth treason?
Treason means giving aid and comfort to one's enemies - like the criminal psychopaths who ordered and conducted the torture.
What you can't stand is being forced to confront the crimes you have supported.
You are coward.

" That artist should be ashamed for painting what is the equivalent of spitting on an American servicemans face.
We should all spit on her face in return but are too busy protecting her right to spit on our faces. "
Idiot.
This young woman should be applauded for her courage in forcing curs like you to look at the actions they have supported.
Art is a powerful medium for the expression of reality. The reality is that what went on in Abu Ghraib is contrary to all standards of common decency. The perpetrators of these crimes should be held up for public opprobrium not hidden out of sight so you do not have to acknowledge the evil you support.
Last time I checked we were supposed to be the good guys - NOT NAZI/BOLSHEVIK perpetrators of evil. Allegedly, to hear the supporters of this inhumane rampage, we were there to remove an evil dictator that tortured people. Was this done so we could change the nationality of the torturers?
Fascists like you who in your craven fears would throw decency to the wind because you are scared are one of the great sources of evil in this world. Your support of this kind of evil is the whining sniveling of a coward.
Torture is the act of a beast and a coward. That this occurred under the American Banner is to our eternal shame.

A "Make Art, Not War" campaign has begun in Florida.
I have posted three of an "Alert" series at
http://www.FloridaArtistsRegistry.com/artists/gabriel/
The images of torture are intermixed with news
report photos of 9-11, and the ubiquitous U.S. flag
including burnt images of Old Glory.
I am circulating a series of original art notecards and
distributing them without cost, to each person I believe
who wants to get out that message.
Last month, a 56-year-old High Springs, FL artist
was arrested and held over night for displaying a
4x5 poster of an upturned Bush rearend with a
protruding flagpole and flag. The arrest occurred
at the University of Florida in Gainesville.
A local City-funded Thomas Cultural Center has
stated that it will remove any art note cards with
a political message, e.g. "Make Art, Not War."
Please let me know of ongoing adverse actions.
Also note that Progressive Magazine has picked
up on the travesty in San Francisco.

Here is an appropriate modification, sighted at Saturday's protest in SF.
Hope you don't mind if I use it as a sticker. I was glad to see someone had used it at the protest!
Someone please explain to me why vandalizing an art gallery and spitting on its owner is wrong, but vandalizing See's Candy Store and spitting on the police during a biotech protest is OK?
By the way, I'm being facetious, I think both are wrong.

M&M Mars and Hershey Foods Corp. are not alone. Other companies whose chocolate is almost certainly tainted with child slavery include: ADM Cocoa, Ben & Jerry's, Cadbury Ltd., Chocolates by Bernard Callebaut, Fowler's Chocolate, Godiva, Guittard Chocolate Company, Kraft, Nestlé, See's Candies, The Chocolate Vault and Toblerone. While most of these companies have issued condemnations of slavery, and expressed a great deal of moral outrage that it exists in the industry, they each have acknowledged that they use Ivory Coast cocoa and so have no grounds to ensure consumers that their products are slavery-free.

Chocolate makers sued for lead content of products [USA]
Reuters 09 May 2002
An environmental group yesterday sued chocolate companies including Hershey and Mars for not disclosing the amount of toxic metals such as lead that are in their products, as required under California law...the American Environmental Safety Institute said research shows that dangerous levels of lead and cadmium in chocolate pose a serious health risk, especially to children...The environmental group cited Mars Inc., Hershey Foods Corp., Nestle USA Inc., Kraft Foods NorthAmerica Inc., Rocky Mountain Chocolate Factory Inc. and See's Candies Inc. for violating California's Proposition 65.
