CALIFORNIA STATEWIDE STUDENT WALKOUT
Students, Faculty, Staff Hold Statewide Walkouts Against Anticipated Further Cuts to be Announced in Gov. Shwarzenegger’s “May Revise” of State Budget

Wednesday May 12, 2004

The California State University is the most populated system of higher education in the state, yet it is also being subjected to severe budget cuts that will cause a wholesale elimination of many undergraduate and graduate degrees and programs.

California State Governor Shwarzenegger will be releasing yet another revision of the state budget on Thursday May 13, 2004. Students across the state are joining as a unified voice on Wednesday May 12, 2004 to oppose any further cuts in education from K-12 to Higher Education.

SAN FRANCISCO STATE UNIVERSITY

The situation is grim: While nearly a third of available budget funding is cached in administration, most lecturers will not be rehired to teach, hundreds of course sections will be removed, tenured faculty will be instructing already overcrowded classrooms, and crucial programs which provide outreach to lower income communities, such as EOP (Equal Opportunity Program), face the very real threat of being eliminated altogether.

The general student body at San Francisco State University walked out of a Town Hall meeting on Thursday, April 29, 2004 and initiated a statewide call for all California State Universities, UC campuses, and Community Colleges to collectively walk out of their classes in May 12, 2004. This date was chosen to show state politicians that students cannot, and will not accept any further proposed cuts to education in the state budget May revision on May 13.

We, the Students, Faculty and Staff of San Francisco State University stand in solidarity with all participating campuses against statewide budget cuts.
WALK OUT TIME IS 10AM AND WILL CONGREGATE IN THE MAIN QUAD, AND PROCEED TO MARCH THROUGHOUT THE CAMPUS CAUSING A SHUT DOWN OF THE ENTIRE UNIVERSITY.

Thursday, May 13, 2004

JOINT PRESS CONFERENCE: 10 AM
Held in front of SFSU Administration Building, off of Holloway & 19th Ave.
