Berkeley Peace & Justice Commission to Consider Resolution Limiting Corporate Rights, Mon

On Mon. May 3rd at 7pm, the City of Berkeley Peace & Justice Commission will consider a resolution limiting corporate rights. The meeting will take place at the North Berkeley Senior Center on Hearst at MLK (towards the back, hall on left.)

If Berkeley residents show support, they may pass it, and send it to the City Council. Public comment starts at 7pm and generally is completed by 7:30 or so. Speak politely or
passionately--very briefly or at length, after introducing yourself. If you don't like to speak in public, hold
a sign such as "End Corporate Rule," or, "Corporations are NOT Persons," or "Reclaim Democracy."

Pursuit of corporate profits with little regard to public interest is what is at the root of most of the world's problems including
untrustworthy mainstream media reporting, environmental degradation, campaign finance contributions bribing politicians, healthcare woes like the new medicare bill and anti-depressants marketed to kids when they increase suicide risk, the recent weakening of Workers' Comp, the nuclearization of space, a renewed arms race and most wars including Iraq & Afghanistan.

The goal of the proposed resolution is to build public awareness of and support for reclaiming democracy from corporate interests. It calls for an eventual constitutional amendment revoking constitutional rights of for-profit corporations. Currently their rights exceed human beings'
rights. Corporations would still have privileges to operate and profit under statutes, but would be held accountable for harms.
