Rally for Justice at UC Medical Centers

by Meredith (meredith [at] union.org.za)
Rally for Justice at UC! May 20th - UC Service and Patient Care workers demand an end to Executive Greed.
Over 3,000 Patient care and Service workers at the UC Davis Medical Center and Campus are fighting for basic cost of living raises (which havent happened for over a year and a half) and an end to favoritism and executive greed. Last year the Medical Center made 43.3 million in profits, and executives at this public non-profit hospital took bonuses between $20,000 and $60,000+ in addition to raises of up to 20% each. The hospital is almost exclusively self-funded, and not reliant on State Budgets for the most part. Retention of many patient care positions is very difficult to maintain right now, which in turn jeopardizes patient care/ staffing ratios. Everyone from custodians to x-ray techs are between 8-22% below market in wages, and are being asked to accept 0-2% for the next 2 years. This is the largest hospital in Northern California. The only level 1 trauma facility.

Workers are kicking off their contract campaign for seniority based pay, fairness not favoritism, and protecting quality services and patient care. Show you support on May 20th at the front entrance to the UCD Medcial Center 2370 Stockton Blvd. 11:30am-2pm.

The union, AFSCME 3299, has fought and won many battles to stop subcontracting at UC, the use of "casual" workers, and much more.

These are mostly low-wage workers-- Hospital Assitants, Custodians, Clerks, etc. The nurse and many licensed techs are represented by other unions. Many of these workers make less than $15 an hour, even after over 20 years of service to the University. Also, the CEO of the Hospital, Bob Chason, will not meet with any of his workers. In fact, he has called the police on them when they marched to his office to make an appointment. He received a salary increase of over 20% last year (he now makes $410,000 yr) and a bonus of $61,000. Meanwhile, no raises for low wage workers, and increased parking fees! Shame on him!
