S.F. MARRY-IN producing art
Photos, creative nonfiction, blogs, songs, exhibits, books? Do you know of creative projects related to the Marry-Ins? Tell the world on IndyBay.org
Many social revolutions produce artworks, from crude songs to timeless classics.
Our historic 2004 San Francisco Marry-In is beginning to do so.
The first fruits, in February and March, were mainly photos and features by Hearst's San Francisco Chronicle
( http://www.sfgate.com/samesexmarriage/ ),
which left queer weeklies running to stay in place.
Plus the online writings of Zak Szymanski
( http://www.authenti-city.com ).
In the crude songs bin, please see "What shall we do with a HATE Amendment?"
The second major achievement is a photo exhibit, "Just Married", ongoing thru June 30 in San Francisco Exposure Gallery, a part-time venue at 801 Howard Street, in the SOMA near 4th St., 4PM to 6PM on Thursdays and Fridays, and noon to 5PM on Saturdays. Also showing on "Gay Pride Day" (?), June 27, a Sunday, 9AM to 5PM, trying to compete with the big LGBTIQ Pride Parade and the clothing-optional Pride festival
( http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?file=/c/a/2004/04/10/DDGM662C751.DTL ).
Also please see (http://www.ExposureGallery.org).
[Suggestion by SUN: Since this exhibit consists of easily-copied JPGs, the gallery should print a duplicate set of hardcopies, and exhibit these on June 26 and 27 at the Pride festival site; rather than hoping celebrants will leave a fun party in the Civic Center area and trek six blocks to 801 Howard. (Too expensive? Ask Pride to find a sponsor.) ]
In the future, we'll see nonfiction anthologies, those zine-like books by which queer trends and sub-communities explain themselves.
Karen and Melody are "putting together a book called SPOUSES FOR LIFE, which will feature the stories and faces of the gay couples who were married in San Francisco." They're "looking for same-sex couples to tell us their stories and help us document this historic event of first same sex marriages!" For info, please visit the couple's website (http://KarenAndMelody.com/spousesforlife.html ).

In SF, April 12 protest is cancelled, circa April 9
April 12 marked one month since the Cal Supremes halted the historic San Francisco Marry-In. So one activist group announced a rally, outside the court building in San Francisco.
But the Monday event was cancelled. One activist sent out a cancellation email on Friday the 9th. By then, the original announcement had been forwarded to many more netizens, and posted repeatedly on news websites like IndyBay.org (http://www.indybay.org/lgbtqi/ ). The cancellation notice reached only a fraction of those who had received news of the planned event.
Such a cancellation is very counter-productive behavior, IMHO. The group shouldn't have announced the event in the first place, if they weren't firmly committed to carrying it thru. A few good events make a better impression than a long list of not-so-good events.
Cancelling an event, unless there's an obvious and overwhelming reason (like a national day of mourning, or another terrorist attack), undermines the credibility of the sponsor(s).
It makes activists [and media persons] wonder whether future events may also be cancelled; and so they'll wonder whether to include events in their crowded schedules.
Sadly,
protester

In addition to the book project mentioned in the article above, there's at least one more.
Also about gay & lesbian married couples.
The second project will apparently be based on interviews,
rather than asking each couple to write a chapter. (?)
