MEDIA ETHICS FORUM ON SATURDAY, APRIL 17, 2004 FROM
11:00 A.M. - 12:00 P.M. -- HOSTED BY THE SF LGBT COMMUNITY CENTER
Date: 4/7/2004

Media Ethics Forum: "Where to Draw the Line in Media Reporting?"

Join the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD) and the San
Francisco Lesbian Gay Bisexual and Transgender Community Center in a panel
discussion regarding journalistic ethics and the fine line drawn between the media's
involvement in the stories they cover and the possible perception of bias from
the public.

After the decision by the San Francisco Chronicle to reassign reporter Rachel
Gordon and photographer Liz Mangelsdorf, in light of their marriage to each
other, larger questions have been raised about the role of the media and the
evolving nature and responsibilities adhered to journalists and their editors.
For instance, many news reporters now write opinion pieces while others have
found themselves in the Sunday talk show circuit. As journalists strive for
stories that are fair, accurate, and inclusive, they also make personal sacrifices
and commitments depending on the demands of their profession.

Panelists will include staff from the San Francisco Chronicle as well as
others -- so stayed tuned. We hope we can have an honest and fair discussion about
the larger questions of journalistic fairness and accuracy when and if
journalists become part of the stories they cover, and what lessons can we learn
from the gray areas of media reporting.

Following the presentation, join us for photo montage of same-sex couples
that have been married or plan to marry -- courtesy of the San Francisco
Chronicle.

To attend this event, please R.S.V.P. to Eddie Gutierrez, GLAAD's Southwest
Regional Media Manager, at gutierrez@glaad.org (323-634-2011).
