OAKLAND -- Alameda County supervisors Tuesday rescinded an ordinance that banned big-box stores from unincorporated areas for only three months.
Faced with a lawsuit challenging their decision, the five supervisors unanimously approved the repeal.
The ban, approved Dec. 16, prohibited retail stores larger than 100,000 square feet that devote more than 10 percent of their floor space to groceries and other nontaxable goods. The ban was backed by grocery workers, mostly employed by Safeway and Albertsons stores.
