The City Council will hear the second reading of the NEO on APRIL 6. PLEASE BE THERE TO LET THE CITY COUNCIL KNOW OAKLAND TENANTS OPPOSE THE NEO!

----MORE ON THE NEO----

******ACTION ALERT*******
*****PLEASE FORWARD WIDELY******

On April 6, Oakland City Council looks likeley to pass a frightening
ordinance called the "Nuisance Eviction Ordinance" (NEO). This ordinance would give landlords, neighbors and the police the ability to evict tenants for actions considered "nuisances" without:
a) charging tenants with a crime or
b) having any real evidence.
This ordinance threatens everyone's rights who lives in Oakland. Councilmember Larry Reid has introduced this measure
supposedly to increase safety in Oakland.

What will this Nuisance Eviction Ordinance mean for Oakland?
* abuse - tenants will be evicted without evidence or due process
* increased homelessness
* families torn apart
* decreased safety in our communities
* the likelihood of increased racial profiling, and a disproportionate
impact on communities of color and other marginalized Oakland communities.

What you can do:
- COME TO THE APRIL 6 MEETING AT 6PM, at Oakland City Hall!
We need to show that there is opposition to this ordinance.
- Call City Council members to tell them to vote NO on
the Nuisance Eviction Ordinance
- Email / fax City Council members to tell them to vote NO (see sample email below)

Please also sign up to speak at the APRIL 6 City Council meeting:
http://www.oaklandnet.com/government/city_clerk/testclerk.cfm.
Let croakland [at] criticalresistance.org know if you've signed up, so we know how many people are coming out in support.

More about this ordinance is at the bottom of this email. This email also includes a sample email to send to city council members, and the phone numbers of city council members.

Questions? Call 510-444-0484, or email croakland [at] criticalresistance.org.

I am writing you today to urge you to vote NO on the Nuisance Eviction Ordinance which comes before you on APRIL 6. A "NO" vote on the Nuisance Eviction Ordinance (NEO) means that you understand that:

- the NEO does not address public safety in our communities -- instead, it criminalizes and exiles members of the community without providing real solutions to problems in our communities.

- The NEO will increase homelessness, which our city does not have the resources to deal with.

- The NEO will destroy families by not permitting families to live together.

- Denying people housing will not make Oakland safer.

- Oakland needs a comprehensive approach to safety that deals with our community's real needs: housing, services, and jobs.

- Everyone in our community deserves stable housing.

I urge you to vote NO on the Nuisance Eviction Ordinance.

Sincerely,

What should I do if someone's dealing drugs in the unit next to mine?
by joe hill
First off it kinda depends on what kind of drugs? But why blame the small dealers. An old black panther vet made this point at the last Oakland City Council meeting. Councilmember Nadel also seemed to be addressing this fact, by talking about supporting social programs and better job opportunities. Many other people talked about similar issues that come up around issues of recovering addicts or people re-entering the community from jail & prison; and their right to have access to housing in their community. There are a lot deeper issues here and that is just glancing over a few briefly. If you want to keep up this dialogue. Please explain your rationale behind supporting this measure. I have always lived near one drug dealer or another in Oakland, and I don't deal myself, but I find no problem with people dealing "soft" drugs or life drugs as the Panthers called them. Especially if it means that those people can have the basics to survive in these lean times in the mean streets of Oakland. I do understand the problem with the possibility of violence when dealers get into one sort of argument or another over turf and other business related disagreements. But a lot of that violence is enabled by the way that we are trying to treat the problem of shitty drugs in our communities, and it doesn't make sense to deal with the dealer on the street, without fixing the problems that have people buying them and selling them on all levels. Going after the root causes to get at the problem seems to make a lot more sense than kicking people into impossible situations where things can only get worse.
And allowing the Oakland Police and Oakland City Councilmembers like Reid and De La Fuente to administer this gets into a whole other list of arguments and discussions.

Guess I had a little more in me. Later.

What if someone is dealing drugs in the unit next to mine and I don't like it? What if I have no problem with drugs or drug users, but because drugs are illegal, the type of people who get involved in selling them are not always the nicest of characters?

Until the revolution comes and everyone has a schedule of daily activity that supports and promotes their best instincts, what do we do about the communities we live in? Although a lot of people don't "mind" drug dealing next to them, ask anyone and they'll tell you that they would rather live in an area with no drug dealers.

And don't tell me to go up and talk to them, because nobody ever does that, no matter what their ideology.

I am producing a short video segment for Streetlevel TV about the NEO. I can't make it to the protest or meeting tonight. If you are shooting tonight, please email me and let me know if I can use some of your footage for the segment.
