On March 20th Many San Franciscans Also Marched For An End To The Occupation Of Palestine

by Z
The "Global Day of Action against War and Occupation" wasnt just aimed at the occupation of Iraq. Many signs and banners expressed outrage at Israel's "aparthied wall" and the oppression of the Palestinian people by the government of Israel.
1_protest.jpg
We will also demonstrate on March 20 in solidarity with the Palestinian people and their right to self-determination, including the right to return to their homes and land. The March 20 demonstration comes only ten days before the anniversary of the historic March 30, 1976, Land Day in Palestine. Calling for liberty, right to return, and self-determination for the Palestinian people on March 20 is an essential political necessity, without which the end to colonial occupations cannot be fully realized. The U.S. invasion and occupation of Iraq is part and parcel of the administration's larger colonial project targeting the people of the Middle East. While the Bush administration spends $2 billion per week to occupy Iraq, it spends $15 million each day to support Israel's war against the Palestinian people.

§Israel's Apartied Wall
by Z
2_wall.jpg
Since June 2002, Israel has been busy erecting an Apartheid Wall which cuts deep inside the Occupied West Bank. Upon completion, the Wall will be some 700 km long and will facilitate the Israeli annexation of approximately 52% of the West Bank, leaving the Palestinians with only 12% of historic Palestine. Nearly 16% of the Palestinian people will be caught on the \'wrong side\' of the Wall, facing expulsion due to unbearable living conditions with little or no access to their lands, markets, water resources, and communities. On the other hand, approximately 98% of the settlements in West Bank will be included in the de facto annexed areas. The Wall is the latest display of long-standing Israeli plans of land grab, Apartheid and expulsion in Palestine.

The \'first phase\' of the Wall was completed in July 2003; it is 145 km long and runs through Jenin, Tulkarem, and Qalqiliya districts of West Bank. It has isolated some of the best farm land in the West Bank from more than 3000 farmer-families, separated flourishing markets from traders, and directly affected the lives of more than 200,000 people.

Currently, destruction for the Wall is taking place in countless localities in the northern West Bank, but in particular in the central West Bank in the Jerusalem and Ramallah districts. With greater international attention around this crime, the number of areas facing daily devastation through the military and Occupation bulldozers has only increased, a clear message by the Occupation. The Palestinian people know full well of the intentions behind the Wall, as stated in a slogan from anti-Wall demonstrations: \"We Will Not Relive the 1948 Nakbe\"

The construction of the Wall has dramatically exacerbated the ills of life under Israeli Occupation. It has robbed the Palestinian people of their livelihoods and freedom of movement, creating ghettos—at times called by those affected \"cages\" - with high levels of unemployment and total dependence on foreign aid for survival. Therefore, a popular grassroots-based movement against the Apartheid Wall becomes an integral part of the struggle against the Occupation, and restoration of the rights of the Palestinian people. Demolition of the Apartheid Wall is to be seen as an integral part of ending the Occupation of Palestine.

§pro-Israel protesters
by Z
6_pro_israel.jpg
Several hundred pro-Israel protesters gathered in front of the courthouse before the march arrived. While many signs refered to Israel wanting peace, but the hostile nature of the group towards all antiwar activists and the jingoistic waving of American flags and signs accusing peace activists of supporting suicide bombers seemed to indicate that the pro-Israel protesters had no interest in peace.
§Freepers

There was also a strong anti-UN sentiment among many in the pro-war crowd. Many people organized by Protest Warrior and the Free Republic intermixed with the pro-Israel crowd uniting in support of a moral system centered around ideas of nationalism and "might makes right".

I was there too and didnt hear any such thing. Some of the proIsrael crowd were really antiUN as can be seen in the picture above. Hamas and the sucide bombers have little support on the left. Most of the support for suicide bombers seems to come from Conservatives who have been undermining the PA for years and helping Hamas gain power. Sharon's latest assasination pretty much guarantees the end of any alternative power structures in the West Bank and Gaza. The biggest enemy of Hamas is a secular Palestinian state and the more Likud and US Republicans make that impossible, the more power Hamas gains.

""Settler" is a racist termed selectively directed by terrorist-supporting thugs like yourselves against the Jewish people. "

Perhaps settler is the wrong word. Israelis living in the West Bank are more like Serbians who moved into Bosnia to displace the population in a form of ethnic cleansing. Children of "settlers" can vote in Israel's elections, wheras Palestinians born in the West Bank and Gaza have no vote in Israeli elections. Why? Is the West Bank and Gaza part of Israel with a racist system that prevents most Palestinians from voting or are settlers invading a foreign country with the help of the IDF? Either all Palestinians born the the West Bank and Gaza should be given the same rights as the childrens of "settlers" born in the West Bank or Gaza, or the settlements should be removed and the Palestinians should be given self government. I guess even under a two state solution immigration from Israel should be allowed but the Israeli's who choose to immigrate under a two state solution would have to live under a Palestinian government and wouldnt get to have Israeli troops spending millions surrounding small farms containing in some cases only a few dozen people.

For those who post here supporting Israel I ask this question. Is it acceptable to deny a people a vote because of their religion? In Israel proper there isnt legal descrimination, but if you really see the West Bank and Gaza as part of Israeli than Israelis position looks worse than apartheid South Africa. If the West Bank and Gaza are not part of Israel, why would you support settlers? Those who support settlers are at some level stating support for a one state solution where eventually the West Bank and Gaza become part of Israel proper and the Arab population is given full voting rights. With a good constition this would still guantee rights to Jews and nonJews, but one rarely hears the supporters of "settlers" admit that the future they are pushing forward is in some sense the destruction of Israel as a Jewish state.

The Israeli occupation of the West Bank and Gaza began in 1967. What was the status if those areas before then? Why couldn't Palestinians vote BEFORE the Israeli occupation?
by hmm
"Status of West Bank/Gaza BEFORE 1967"

Being occupied by an outsider pisses people off more than living under ones own dictatorship but that doesnt justify either situation. Palestinians ARE worse off now in that the current government rulling over the W Bank and Gaza has no interest in the Palestinians. Its easier to oppress an other especially when the other provides no needs to the oppressing population.

People who oppose the Occupation are not demanding a return to the British mandate or Ottoman rule. And they are not demanding a king like in Jordan. One can't use the poverty of the past to justify racism. S Africa used the same logic. "Why should S African give blacks the vote when most African countries are dictatorships?" Whats the problem with that logic? Treating a population differently based off ethnicity is different than treating everyone badly If the US decided to tax one ethnic group twice the amount as the rest of the population, pointing to higher tax rates in outher countries cant be used as a justification.

Many Israelis might respond that Palestinians in Israel can vote. But, Settlers born in the W Bank who are Jewish are treated differently from Palestinians born in the West Bank (or even Israel proper) who now live in refugee camos in the West Bank and cannot vote. There isnt even a convoluted argument for settlements or long term occupation of a population while denying that population basic rights.

"Hamas and the sucide bombers have little support on the left."

Really? You would never guess that by visiting this site or any of the other IMCs where there are reports expressing solidarity with the recently assasinated Hamas leader. After all, many on the left consider Hamas a "humanitarian" organization.

"After all, many on the left consider Hamas a "humanitarian" organization. "

Hey, don't all humaitarian organizations kill Jews?
by Who is killing Who
And Israeli Jews (I do not want to lump all Jews together, because I know that their are more good Jews then bad) kill more Palestinians, Do you expect the Palestinians to sit there and do nothing while their land is confiscated and their homes are demolished and not fight for their freedom.
The U.S. is for freedom for all is it not?

To see who the real victims are in this struggle for Palestinian freedom take the time to see who has died and how:
