Oakland opposition to school closures
Today, March 16, 2004, hundreds of mostly high school students came to Oakland city hall to express their opposition to the announced closure of 5 small schools, which have primarily African-American students.
Enclosed are pictures of some of the students and a couple of speakers/performers present at the rally before the Oakland city council hearings. The rally condemned both the school closures and the nuisance eviction law, linking both as targeting especially youth of color who are being deprived of an education and a place to live if the police chose to harass them.
