Tanks destroyed by depleted uranium in the '91 Gulf War

by tristan
Pictures I took of destroyed tanks on the "Highway of Death" where the US bombed Iraqi troops reteating from Kuwait to Basra.

Tens of thousands were killed and the depleted uranium has given cancer to thousands and will continue to do so. In the most recent war massive amounts of depleted uranium were used throughout Iraq. The consecuences will be fealt for generations to come.

A memorial to the impotency of radical Islam

They should rejoin the civilized world and regain the power they had during the Ottoman Empire. Arafat and Hussein and these morons can't lead them anywhere but back to the Stone Age. With the Eurosocialists cheering on their self-destruction on the sidelines with rhetoric, slogans, and romanticism. Oh yes, and with phoney malarky about DU.

DU dangerous? Oh yeah, that's not true... I mean, how could URANIUM possibly hurt anyone?

It's radioactivity is only 70% of normal uranium and it has a half-life of a mere 4.5 Billion years. So what's to worry about?

Really, if the Pentagon says it's OK, then we can rest assured that it's safe.

Spread some on your toast!

Just like agent orange.

Trust the Pentagon. Our veterans did... and nothing bad ever happened to them, did it?

I thought depleted uranium sabot rounds were SUPPOSED to be non-radioactive... is there something they're not telling us? The poor guys(iraqi's) in the tank prolly never knew what hit'em, as it was shot in the back... and the u.s. say the insurgents are cowards for hiding, pff! we shoot guys in the back, and when they're down, so the USMC and the u.s. army are cowards TOO!!!

Foprtunately, your science is non-existent. There are no long-term effects from deplteed uranium. It is only mildly radioactive and is comparable to wearing watches with dials that glow. No excessive blood levels of toxic compounds or radioactivity have been observed in any Bosnia, Kosovo, or Iraq populations studied. US troops have been extensively examined and have been found to only have extremely low levels. These conclusions are all supported, not only by the U.S. DOD, but the International Atomic Energy Agency, the World Health Organization, and a published article in the New England Journal of Medicine. See July post at mottsblog.blogspot.com for links and quotes.

"... American taxpayers paid to ship the tanks to Iraq and to return them for disposal or re-building in the United States. The tanks are 12 feet wide and weigh a stout 70 tons, or 140,000 pounds.

The enduring vigorous stupidity of the U.S. military pretends that radiation is one of those things that if you can't see it, it can't hurt you. They are thoroughly delusional, of course. A National Academy of Sciences report released June 30, 2005, finds that there is no safe level of radiation. Any radiation is bad...."

i just found this discussion and thought i add my 2 cents. iam no native english speaker so plz be patient with my spelling and grammar.

i think the danger of the DU rounds is the "smal/invisible/whatever word to use" uranium dust wich gets kicked up in the air and settles down around every vehicle/structure wich got hit by a DU round. you breath it, so you got uranium dust in your lungs wich will kill you slowly. by radiation or not isnt importanat. uranium is poisonous even without radiation if you have it in you lungs.

end of storry.

I like looking at old battle tanks that remind us of battles of yesteryear. I am fully aware of the horrors of war, but to hear Americans dissing Americans is just stupid! Americans shooting people in the back? What the hell kind of comment is that? Dude, it's WAR! Kill or be killed! If you don't shoot them they shoot you get it? It is the same on all sides of any conflict! Of any country, in any time period! Is war a good thing? No it isn't but I am sick of hearing Anti-American Sentiments, hell at least we do something about it unlike half the countrys out there that just stood by and died off when Nazi Germany was practicing Expansion policies, The people of Europe didn't know what hit em! So they all whined for the us to come and save there ass! In more modern times, Kuait, begged the us to liberate them!, they criticized us for waiting so long! I remember clearly! They sent people to my school, telling us to write congress and press for liberation. You see, the real backstabbing going on, is the American Uneducated Public, That insists that the country they live and work in is somehow just bullying the rest of the world. You should at least know that people have died so you can sit on your dumb ass and write about your dumb opinions as if you wouldn't get your head chopped off if you set foot for one day in one of these "poor victimized countries" Countries that marry their women young then beat them like animals! Yeah, we shoot them in the back, the ass, or their balls, so you can live a life with blinders on.

I agree. There is a part of the American population that is suffering from too much of a good thing. They are spoiled plain and simple. Since WWII, generations have had it pretty damned good. No experiance with epademics (1918 flu e.g.), deppression (1929), or a world war. They haven't had to do without. There is nothing wrong with enjoying peace, its just that generations tend to forget why they have it so well and that it wasn't free to aquire. The biggest crime that this generation is guilty of is being able to enjoy their peace while others in the world cant even get a taste of it in order to see what it is like.
Remember that things that are worth having arent easy to aquire or come with a cheap price tag, otherwise it wouldn't be worth having. It took lots of time for freedom to work its way into places like Japan, S. Korea, Germany, and Italy. Now they have some of the best economies. It is just sad that some think that everything can be solved by talking. That doesnt work when not everyone is listening. I believe more have died in the name of peace than in war. While they talk and talk about what should be done about something, more and more die.

I guess that I don't really understand the issue. In previous wars, a non uranium armored piercing tank round entered the confined area and lit up anything that would burn or melt and pretty much instantly fry those inside. I don't understand thel negative use of deleted uranium sabots to pierce armored vehicles when they seem to be using a similar armoured composite to repel them. Please educate me on the subject.
