Message in the music: an interview with Boots from the Coup
The Coup are major players on the Bay Area Hip Hop scene and have been since the early ‘90s, their revolutionary lyrics still used to articulate solutions to the people’s oppression. Boots is the front man for the Coup. Other members include Pam the Funkstress, the turntablist, and T-Kash, the hype man.
The Coup got into some controversy over the cover of their last album, “Party Music,” which showed the World Trade Center blowing up. It was set to go to print days before Sept. 11 went down. The Coup got a lot of international publicity, which Boots used to address some of the everyday issues of basic survival in the community and some of the flagrant violations that go on against the people in the community at the hands of this government and the new corporate world order.
