Camping Out to get Married
Hundreds of same-sex couples are descending upon SF City Hall tonight (feb 15), camping out overnight to get in line to get married tomorrow.
As of 8:30pm Sunday (feb15), there were about 200 people camping out in line to get married tomorrow. More people were showing up by the minute. The line had already stretched around the corner. By morning... who knows!

You know how to take good nighttime pictures.
Night shots are more challenging, yes... But there are several key techniques that go a long way toward getting an interesting, usuable shot.
If you're shooting with flash, then you want to use it creatively. One way is to use the flash to light a subject that is near you, but still use a relatively long exposure time in order to get well-illuminated background. (e.g., flash on the Marry-In flyer, but long enough exposure to get the rich golden glow of City Hall in the background.
If you're not using flash, then you should probably be using a tripod to avoid shake and blur. However, both of the above shots were taken without a tripod. I have the advantage of shooting with a digital camera that allows me to quickly adjust to the film speed equivalent of ISO 1600 (or even 3200, if necessary) when conditions require it (e.g., you're on the move, or where flash is Not Allowed). Quality is reduced at these high-ISO levels, but it's better than not getting the shot. Such as this very grainy shot of Cup, from the local band, I Am Spoonbender. (Realize that this is a rough cut and the shot hasn't been properly cleaned up.)
Happy picture taking!
