Explanation of Newsom motivation

The 2/15/04 Sunday Chronicle's truth-telling of the Democrat Newsom's gay marriage promotion being a Democratic Party con game should not surprise anyone. The issue of gay marriage was on the California ballot in March 2000 in the form of barring gay marriage, Prop 22. San Francisco County led the state opposition in voting 68% No on Prop 22, but statewide, it passed with 61% of the vote. A total of 7 million people voted in that election in a state with 26 million adults. In other words, the workingclass did not vote and that presidential primary had a contest in the Republican presidential race, bringing out more of the fascist vote than might otherwise have voted.

The proposal that a county could just issue marriage licenses to gays and allow a court challenge to decide the issue has come up many times. Gay people have gone to various marriage license departments across the country to challenge the law themselves, and now we have the Democrats in San Francisco allowing the city to issue the marriage licenses, knowing full well there will be a court challenge. During this presidential election year, this is just a ploy for the Democrats to win votes.

This is the Democratic Party's con game over and over again. They cannot win the presidential race as they have nothing to offer the workingclass, but they can try to stop the Reds and Greens, the sole reason for the existence of the Republican twin party of capitalism, the Democrats.

Do not fall for this con game. Of course, support gay mariage,but do not vote for any Democrat or Republican at any level of government. Vote Red (Peace & Freedom) or Green and Yes on 56 and No on the other state propositions, and in San Francisco, No on Measure 2 and No on G and J and Yes on the rest.

it all though, Yuppie Mayor Newsom needed a life-saver and
the Massachussetts high court ruling gave it to him! With major charges of election fraud directed at his campaign team
and louder shouts for Newsom's Recall, it's no wonder he had to find a straw to grasp at : issue gay marriage licenses! Regrettably, the gay community is being played like a harp by
this shrewd G.Q. politician. Newsom knows all along that his
so-called "challenge" to the status quo will disappear into thin air once it reaches the U.S. Supreme Court. And, as for all the $82 fees collected for those licenses, considerate it Grand

First, the whole point is the court challenge. At some point both state and federal courts will decide this and the whole point of whats happening in SF is to force this. In Massachusetss the courts took the lead and it could be years before anyone gets married. Since it will take someone getting married and moving to another state, trying to claim immigration benefits or trying to get federal benefits from the marriage to force a federal case whats happening in SF is more likely to force a federal decission than the route take in Massachusetss.

Secondly, while Newson has a lot to gain the Democrats do not. Kerry has taken a stand against gay marriage but claims he supports gay rights ( http://seattletimes.nwsource.com/html/nationworld/2001856164_kerrygays12.html ) Nationally the country is conservative enough that this issue will not help the Democrats (especially when Kerry is going to be attacked from both sides)

Most Democrats are just in it to win and read polls to see what positions they should take. Newsom's stand on gay marriage is a publicity stunt, but who cares. If people can potentially gain some rights as a result of the stunt we shouldnt be criticizing Newsom for being Newsom (we should be cirticizing his other policies we disagree with). And at both a state and federal level this isnt just about marriage, it is a civil rights issue. In many countries one can be jailed or even killed for being gay. State sanctioned gay marriages in the US will be a huge step forward for gay rights worldwide.

Gavin Newsom is clearly playing "left" after nearly being beaten by Gonzalez and the Green/lib-left Demo/anarcho block.

Gonzalez correctly nailed Gavin over and over about being in a party that Opposes gay marriage.

That said, the masses of gay, lesiban, bi and trans folk who waited in line for hours and hours to get married are the ones making history. Newsom will prove to be incidental to the liberation of gay people.
