Phyllis Lyon and Del Martin
Among the most beloved figures in the lesbian community, Del Martin and Phyllis Lyon got married in San Francisco on February 12, 2004. A couple since 1953, they first earned a spot in queer history by founding the first national lesbian organization, the Daughters of Bilitis.
From its modest beginnings with eight members in 1955, the Daughters of Bilitis grew into a major force, helping lesbians meet outside of bars, documenting their lives, and promoting civil rights.

I loved seeing the "back then" photo!!!
Staying married is a tough enough chore for straight people (even with the blessing of the Rev. Lou Sheldon & Jerry Falwell)--look at the rising divorce rates.
Del & Phyllis, thank-you for reminding us of what is not impossible. Now if only the "defense of marriage" kooks would evaporate or realize that their "union of one man with one woman" dogmatism neither defends marriage nor stabilizes society.

Congratulations to Del and Phyllis! Their book Lesbian/Woman got me through difficult times in my adolescence, and I'm overjoyed to see them able to marry at long last.
*blush* I thought they were insisting on my title. I'll just slink away in embarrassment now....
