It is a stark cinematic portrait of a neglected community struggling to
survive amidst gang violence, environmental issues and economic decline in
one of the world's wealthiest cities. Set against the backdrop of a vibrant
Hip Hop subculture, this raw and gripping film depicts a spirited black
ghetto confronting harsh realities.
Where: Berkeley's Fine Arts Cinema
2451 Shattuck @ Haste in Berkeley CA

This is an opportunity to see the documentary film by first time director
Kevin Epps that has garnered acclaim via previous one off screenings at
independent film festivals around the U.S. It returns by popular demand to
the Bay Area after a weekend of sold out shows in February @ Berkeley's Fine
Arts Cinema and San Francisco's Red Vic.
Winner of the audience choice award at SF's Black Film Festival, Straight
Outta Hunters Point was recognized by the San Francisco Bay Guardian with a
Goldie Outstanding Local Discovery award last November. Recently Epps has
presented the film in an educational outreach role at high schools, colleges
and universities including UCLA, Sonoma State, and UC Berkeley.
Since screenings at festivals in Santa Fe NM, Park City UT and elsewhere,
the director, in association with Berkeley based editor Josh Callaghan have
retooled the film to a taught 75 minute cut.
S.O.H.P will be screening each night for a full week at 9:15 p.m in Berkeley
beginning Friday May 10th - 17th at The Fine Arts Cinema. This is also a
good time to visit the Fine Arts Cinema before it closes in June for a
construction project that will darken the theater until 2004.
The film will also show again at San Francisco's Red Vic Moviehouse May
23rd - 27th and for one showing in San Rafael's Film Center on May 29th.
Director Kevin Epps will appear at selected screenings
