UNVEILING THE CESAR E. CHAVEZ STAMP:
WHAT IT MEANS TO FARM WORKERS
PRESENTED BY TINA FLORES
Cesar E. Chavez was born before his time. Way back in the late 1950’s, when he was a migrant farm worker himself, he protested spraying crops with pesticides since so many migrant farm workers were coming down with cancer. His fight against cancerous pesticides eventually brought reform to U.S. agriculture; selling the worst pesticides to American farmers was finally prohibited. But the very same pesticides were then sold to Third World countries! Today we are eating fruits and vegetables from these countries that use the same prohibited pesticides on their crops! Because Cesar was a spiritual person believing in the dignity and wholeness of the human being, the new stamp in his name symbolizes healthy food and wholeness for all people, not only Americans. Tina will show a short video on Cesar and talk about his fight for wholesomeness. His dream is being realized in Cuba where sustainable farming –permaculture – has been practiced for decades. Tina will also be showing a series of short films from Cuba -- the first four to show here Sunday afternoon, April 27.
