Gardeners over the millennia have noted that certain plants thrive alongside certain other plants and that some plants help keep pests away. Learn how to use companion planting techniques to keep your vegetables happy. Learn about plants that attract beneficial insects that will pollinate and keep pests away, and learn about plant guilds and the importance of polycultures in keeping your garden healthy. This class will use permaculture principles and will emphasize growing vegetables in the East Bay microclimates. Taught by Christopher Shein, who runs Wildheart Gardens, an edible, native, medicinal and other useful plant permaculture nursery, design and landscaping business in Oakland. He teaches at Merritt College, and helps run the Bay Area Seed Interchange Library and SPACE, as well as other urban agriculture projects.
Cost: $10 Ecology Center members, $15 others, no one turned away for lack of funds.
Info: Beck, 510/548-2220 x233.
