Apparently, a Bechtel employee really had to get out of the building. He almost fell flat on his face after deciding to leap over the human chain.

The police did not try and stop him

by Bechtel protest a waist of time!
this is totally the biggest waist of time I have seen since the start of the "peace movement"
when you are disrupting the rebuilding of Iraq how can you say you are the advocates of peace?
why to you wish to keep Iraq in this desperate
position? why to you wish Iraq to suffer?
by the news, fresh from my closet!
so
you are doing a little advertising for your homemade newspaper. are you selling these door to door?
or have you moved up to a paper rout!

Editorial what? Are you one of the editors? And what do you mean by "woosh". Your comments are really quite infantile and this will be my last comment concerning your obnoxious postings.

Hahaha, the protesting far left is moving further and further away from reality and their alleged goals with each passing week. I'm a liberal who feels totally alienated by you freaks, even though we allegedly share the same basic values.

by Eric Wagner (eric [at] basetree.com)
I am not sure why you have such glee at being alienated. Are you really a liberal?

by Peace Girl
Thanks to everyone who participated in the direct actions this past week. Wish I could've been there...But I'm standing on the sidelines cheering all my fellow activists out there! Let's keep it up!

-- "when you are disrupting the rebuilding of Iraq how can you say you are the advocates of peace?" --

You are making a rather large assumption concerning Bechtel. Unfortunately, Bechtel has a history walking away with large sums of money without actually doing anything and/or making things worse.

Iraq certainly needs to be built, however, are sweetheart deals with US companies the best way to do it?
by nando
Why do you want iraqi's to suffer??????????
that's the most ridiculous question ever asked, u moron!!
the iraqi's have been suffering for 12 YEARS during the us-led embargo. The us-terrorists didn't want saddam gone in 91, cause in that period IRAN was the big ogre, and the USA sponsored SAddams army!!
Yes! They gave Saddam chemical weapons. Saddam used them on iran and on the kurds, firing chemical weapons from AMERICAN choppers.....
you need some history lessons man, and not the ones they teach in american highschool.
In 83 Donald rumsfeld shook the hand of saddam in baghdad, and 10 years later he's the hitler of the middle-east.

And now, after the war the iraqi's are suffering more then ever, and the us army does NOTHING, NOTHING to help. they're to busy 'securing' the oil-rigs.

And now america is heading for various copys of nine eleven, and you know what.. in a way they've deserved it...

Nobody sold Saddam chem weapons. He built them himself, poisoning the land in the process. Is it our fault because we sold him helicopters? France sold him jet fighters! Which he used against innocent people! If Belgium made a decent aircraft he would have bought those! And would have protested that?

The sanctions were UN sanctions, not US. Arab states competing in the oil markets fought to keep them in place. I don't care what you say because you will hate us no matter what. Sanctions? We starve people. No sanctions? We support a dictator. There is nothing we can do which will make you happy.

by Amanda (land_of_the_greed [at] yahoo.com)
"Nobody sold Saddam chem weapons. He built them himself,"
...from materials that were sold to him by the US under Reagan.

"The sanctions were UN sanctions, not US. "

There were various cases that materials were approved by the UN, but the US held them back. They may have been created by the UN, but they were maintained and led by the US.
by okey dokey
Amanda, are you saying we should have embargoed all industrial and agricultural materials going to Iraq?

Is that what you blame us for? Selling to Iraq what every other country buys and sells? Perhaps we should have cut off all Iraqi factories from American suppliers? Is that what you say we should have done? Because that is what it would take.

You're as bad as the guy who said it's our fault because Saddam used American helicopters. Rest assured, we would be blamed if Saddam used Belgian helicopters instead.

So tell me, now that you know for a fact that we supplied materials for Saddam's weapons factories, and you must also know these same materials are still sold worldwide in large quantities, who else should we deny the use of sulfates and other industrial chemicals now?

Also, what is your position regarding the French selling nuclear capabilities to Saddam? No big deal?
by Eric Wagner (eric [at] basetree.com)
Nothing like a red-herring argument to keep people on their toes.

Various countries sold various things to Iraq. The real issue is that the US made various claims concerning Iraq that were either outright lies or at least amazingly hypocritical.

For example: Saddam did gas "his own people", however, this occurred while the US was supporting and selling materials and technology to Saddam.

In any case, the core issue at present is the veracity of claim that the US was in imminent danger. This does not appear to have been correct. We can argue about who sold what when, however, the stated reason for the Iraq war seems to have been a lie.
by Scottie
yes and OJ simpson killed his wife while he was still considered innocent by the poliece..

after a little while they confirmed what he had done beyond reasonable doubt and they began to oppose OJ.

That is how it should be. should we have convicted sadam of killing people before he actually killed them? what a ridiculous argument
by Eric Wagner
Scottie, who are you replying to?

by nando
Man, there are documents about that!!! it's a FACT that those weapons were sold (at low price) to fight IRAN who was usa's ogre at that time (and now again)

I have a great deal of respect for the americans who, under hard circumstances (no freedom of speech, black lists) keep protesting against the imperialist us policy, that has caused 100 times more victims worldwide than a world trade center STUFFED UP with people. But Noooooooo, after 9/11 everyone has to feel FUCKING sorry for the usa. i just want to say: wake up you're suffering is no worse than the suffering of palestines, vietnamese, guatemalian, iraqi's, chechens.

+the war on terror is like cutting off a dragons head, everytime you chop the dragon multiplies. in the middle-east there's propably a whole line of Osama's in line just waiting to crush a plane into a us target...
Doesn't it make the pro-war americans think about their position when they see that the US flag is burnt all over the world, when thousands of people are willing to sacrifice their life just to harm the us????????

I am against terrorism, but it always has it's causes..
Bush'n co ROT IN AGONY!!
by nando
and another thing, there are a lot of people who call themselves protesters, who say: we CHOOSE not to attack iraq, as if there was an option, as if america could walk all around the globe, saying 'hmm should we attack this country? naaah.' That was a choice not to be made by america, the un security had that authority, and america just ignored the security council, with an arrogance that is beyond any imagination

by brenda-n
right on, down with Bechtel! down with corporate oligarchy! free the people of Iraq from US neo-imperialism!

-in solidarity with all those who assisted with and participated in blocking the Bechtel building
by Scottie
eric my point (quite a bit above here) was that the us supported sadam and then he did somthing bad and then not too long after they stoped supporting him. isnt that how it should be? we arent mind readers are we?
by amon
Eric Wagner and his marry little band of misfits
are still pretending that they did something at this little Bechtel protest ? you really believe this??
this is the silliest thing I have heard in a long time!
by Eric Wagner (eric [at] basetree.com)
Thanks Amon! I have always wanted a "marry [sic] little band of misfits" of my own.

Actually, I can't take much credit here for the Bechtel action as I am not much of an organizer. I just show up to take the photos.
See here for more information on the actual organizers:
