Diane Feinstein profits from war in Iraq
This just makes me sick. How can she assocaite herself with this blatant war of imperialism?

URS Corp., a San Francisco planning and engineering firm partially owned by California Sen. Dianne Feinstein's husband, landed an Army contract Monday worth up to $600 million.
The award to help with troop mobilization, weapons systems training and anti-terrorism efforts is the latest in a string of plum defense jobs snared by URS. In February, the firm won an army engineering and logistics contract that could bring in $3.1 billion during the next eight years.
Government contracting has come under increasing scrutiny by Congress and citizen groups, with critics decrying the political connections of firms winning lucrative jobs. Richard Blum, Feinstein's husband, serves on the company's board of directors and controls about 24 percent of the firm's stock,
according to Hoover's Inc. research firm.
A Feinstein spokesman Monday declined to comment on the contract.
Blum and several URS representatives could not be reached for comment. A Pentagon spokesman said he was unfamiliar with the contract.
Announced in a company press release Monday, the contract calls for URS Corp.'s EG&G division and partner International Consultants Inc. to help with operations planning, troop mobilization, weapons system training and anti- terrorism assessment. The contract runs for five years.
"We are very pleased with this important win, which further expands our strong relationship with the Army and demonstrates our ability to provide a full spectrum of support services to ensure that our troops remain combat ready and capable of quickly mobilizing to address threats around the world," said George R. Melton, president of the EG&G division, in a press release.
URS boasts some 25,000 employees working in more than 20 countries. Although the firm has a long history of government work, it has focused more on those activities since acquiring EG&G from the Carlyle Group investment firm last year for about $500 million.
EG&G works with the military, NASA, and several federal departments, according to Hoover's. The company's areas of expertise range from designing transportation infrastructure to training people to dismantle weapons of mass destruction.
URS brought in more than $2.4 billion in revenue during 2002.

How? Money, that's how. Like the story says, profit, as lot's of it.
Let's hope the resolution that the Berkeley City Council passed a few weeks back - an excess profits tax on war profits - finds its way to congress.
Sadly, if we aren't knocking our congresspeople unconscious with angry responses, they're useless. Except for getting personal profit from war, of course.

Earlier this month, another firm of which Blum
has a controlling interest in, the Perini Corporation
of Massachussetts, won a $100 million U.S. army
contract as well.
According to biz.yahoo.com, Blum controls 5.8 million
shares worth of stock in the Perini Corporation, worth
about $32 million, making him one of the top investors
in that firm.

Perini rises after company wins Army contract
Boston Business Journal
Shares of Perini Corp., the largest U.S. builder of
hotels and convention centers, rose 40 percent Monday
after the company was awarded a contract by the U.S.
Army.
The shares rose $1.61 to $5.60, the highest closing
price in 11 months. They have gained 26 percent this
year. In Tuesday trading, the stock gave back some
gains, slumping 12 cents to close at $5.48.
Perini won a one-year contract from the U.S. Army
Corps of Engineers to perform design, construction and
maintenance work for Central Command, the Engineers
Corps said Friday. Central Command is in 25 countries
and is commanding the war in Iraq. The contract's
value could be anywhere from $500,000 to $100 million.
"The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers picked us as one of
the three companies to provide services to Centcom,"
Robert Band, Perini's president and chief operating
officer, said. "That's probably one thing that spiked
people's interest."
Washington Group International Inc. and Fluor Corp.
received similar contracts. Engineers Corps
spokeswoman Joan Kibler declined to say last week
where the work would be performed.

Hello
The Carlyle group begins to be known in Europe, because of its high investments in Defence (Bofors, QinetiQ and recently Fiat Avio...), but also because Carlyle is being denounced as one of the major "winner" of the war in Iraq.
A pretty good article has been realized by the website http://www.infoguerre.com on the activities and the networks of Carlyle.
At last, a swiss website has been created called 'Stop Carlyle !' to denounce Carlyle as an influencal actor of Bush policy in Europe.

Sincerely,
Simon

Geez....at least the Freepers and the folks on the right-wing are honest about their support of the war.
When it comes to light that the Dem's only want to tell you what you want to hear to get them in office....as with Feinstein here....how does that make you feel?

I don't think Feinstein ever really represented the people. Typical big money Democrat (just like any Republican). Another good reason to vote Peace and Freedom or Green Party...hmm that anarchism is sounding better and better every day
Someone has to do the job, isn't it better to send in experienced people that already have a good track record?.
Feinstein admitted on her website that overwhelmingly the majority of people in California who phoned her SF or DC office asked her to vote "NO" for the war. And she still voted YES.
If you examine Ms. Feinstein's voting record, she has always put big $$ ahead of ethics. She's all about big DC insider dealings. She is also pursuing a Vice Presidential nomination in 2004. A huge mistake for the democrats.
There's a great quote I heard the other day:
"Republicans are bought and sold. Democrats go to the highest bidder."
My own quote is as follows: Both parties are the wings of the same vulture.
