Intense Police Violence, Call Jerry Brown

by on the streets
There has been extroadinary police violence at this morning's dock action, including tear gas, concussion grenades, police running over people with motorcycles and rubber bullets. Pickets have been entirely peaceful. Over 1,000 people turned out to shut down the port and have been extremely successful. People are regrouping at West Oakland BART.

APL WAS SHUT DOWN! WORKERS FROM THE FIRST SHIFT WENT HOME BECAUSE THE ARBITRATOR STATED THAT THE PROTEST POSED A "HEALTH AND SAFETY HAZARD"! THE WORKERS STILL GET PAID!!!! ILWU workers who were not participating in the protest have been shot with rubber bullets and a ILWU business agent has reportedly been arrested.

There has been extroadinary police violence at this morning's dock action, including tear gas, concussion grenades, police running over people with motorcycles and rubber bullets. It is likely that this violence was called for by the Mayor's office, which generally has a practice on non-confrontation with pickets. Pickets have been entirely peaceful. Over 1,000 people turned out to shut down the port and have been extremely successful. People are regrouping at West Oakland BART.
Jerry Brown's Office: 510-238-3141 Ask that the police violence stop immediately and that the political prisoners be released.

The world from West Oakland BART is that folks are now marching from the docks/West Oakland to downtown. They plan to visit the Oakland Federal building and then City Hall. Folks interested in expressing their outrage can join this group (instead of heading to the docks.)

FYI - "12th Street" would be the appropriate BART stop for both the Oakland Federal Building and City Hall.

When you call, you get re-routed to (510)444-2489. It is the Community Assistance coordinator line. I left my name and number.
I think if anything, too, this mornings violence strengthens my resolve to block Tony Halls proposal- does any one know where that stands?

The current Yahoo and Associated Press reports posted here have claimed that protesters threw bolts and rocks at the cops. Can anyone who was there tell me if this occurred at any point during the action?

Thx,

I was tempted to throw rocks after I was hit 4 times with wooden bullets, but I supressed my urge. I did not see anyone at any time throwing anything except for the police throwing the concussion greneades like they thought they were in Iraq.

I very much doubt that anyone did throw anything. However, even if one or two persons had thrown something, it does not justify the brutality and severity of the responce. After the first wave of brutality, most of the people were trying to stay out of range of the projectiles. We were being chased and shot at for over an hour.

If one provocoteur throws something, that does not excuse the kind of behavior that was displayed. It was completely overkill.

I talked to many people who were there that day, and noone I talked to saw anyone besides police throwing anything.
