I didn't know Rachel Corrie, but her death affected my deeply. I found out at work yesterday, in a telephone conversation with Rachel Engler-Stringer.
I fell to the floor.
My co-workers, wonderful people that they are, took over my responsibilities and let me begin mourning.
From work I went to the Vimy Memorial (in Saskatoon, Canada) for the Peace Vigil, where the wonderful members of our community shared their mourning with mine, as the brutal machinery of death poises itself to destroy the lives of innocent Iraqis.
I'm not really sure why Ms Corrie's death has hit me so hard. Perhaps it is the fact that she was (was, in this context, is a horrible word) a member of the ISM. Perhaps it is that I have been in similar situations and feel guilty that I am still here. Perhaps when I hear that a Rachel has died in Palestine I immediately associate this with our Rachel. Regardless,
yesterday I cried; today I am numb.
I don't want to believe that there is a degree to which it hurts me so because it is a white person, an American, that has died, but I suppose that is possible. The ramifications of Ms Corrie's murder are certainly horrible
for the ISM's work in Palestine, using our citizenship to stand between Palestinians and their oppressors. It is clear that we are all expendable, and perhaps that frightens me more than the knowledge that Palestinian and Arab lives have always been cheaply sold.
I am afraid that this day will be pushed aside for other deaths, new deaths, exploding, prime-time, made-for-TV deaths to be bandied about like batting averages and goal percentages. I am afraid that heroes like Rachel Corrie will go unmourned. I am afraid that I will lose the pain that I am feeling and move on, just so, and forget.
I am no longer a religious person, and in certain ways that troubles me. Not long ago I would have known that I could pray and have a Higher Power with which to share the guilt, shame, and rage. As an Atheist, all I have is other people. I think it is enough.
I think we will not forget Rachel Corrie. I think we will not forget the Palestinian people. I think we will oppose this new but old war in our different ways, singly and together, and ensure that no one who resists this empire will die in vain. I think we are the difference that will change this world, will topple this empire, and will move on to a better and more humane future. I believe it because I have to.
Something has to change. It might as well be now.
peace, love, solidarity,

I thnk it will be a while before anybody else lies down in front of a bulldozer. So we have that going for us. What did she think, because she was an AMERICAN (one who liked to scream and burn the flag, no less) that the Israelis, trying to protect their people from murderers, were going to back off? Wrong again.
Why put up with lying Zionist spam like the above from "uhh." This guy posted his 500 page bullshit report twice making it impossible to follow the thread.
Does the truth scare you? Apparently so.
P.S. Comparing nazis with those who believe that jews have the same right everyone else does to a safe homeland is idiotic. "Zionism" is that belief, that after 2000 years of discrimination against them, jews deserved a safe little strip of land to call their own. If you want to demonize and distort it, that's your problem.

At 2 pm on Friday the ISM received word that Israeli military bulldozers were demolishing houses in Rafah town in the south of the Gaza Strip. The destruction is part of Israel's "Apartheid Wall" policy towards the Occupied Territories. Whereby Palestinians communities will be sealed from the outside world by a massive series of walls, complete with towers from which military sharpshooters can monitor their activities. The section of the Wall under construction near Rafah stretches along the entire length of Gaza's border with Egypt. To give the snipers in the wall's towers clear fields of fire, the Israeli occupation forces in Gaza intend to demolish all the houses within 70 - 100 metres of the wall
As soon as they received word of the demolitions seven activists (3 US, 3 UK and 1 Dutch) left ISM Rafah headquarters in Gaza to resist them. The site of the demolitions was in an area of Rafah known of "Block O" that is overlooked by four of the wall's towers including the infamous Saleh e-Deen Tower from which Israeli snipers have murdered several of Rafah's residents. When they arrived the activists saw a row of six houses being systematically bulldozed by two Israeli military bulldozers guarded by a tank. They were unable to approach the bulldozers directly because of landmines but found an alternative route to the devastation, which bypassed the minefield.
As soon as the activists began to approach the bulldozers they were fired upon from the towers and the tanks which directed rifle and machine gun fire at the ground in front of them. Using their megaphone the activists announced that they were unarmed international peace activists and continued to advance. The tank and the soldiers in the towers continued to fire warning shots at them but the activists refused to submit to their intimidation and continued their approach.
As soon as the activists came under fire they phoned the ISM media office to alert me to the danger they were under and I immediately made an emergency call to the US consulate in Tel Aviv to inform them what was happening and request that they alert the headquarters of the Israeli occupying forces in the Gaza Strip that there were international peace activists (including 3 Americans) in Rafah Town that were coming under fire from Israeli troops and ask them to please exercise restraint (the standard ISM procedure in such circumstances).
After being put on hold several times. I had the following conversation with US consulate staff:
Diplomat: I'm sorry but its Shabbat and we can't contact anyone in the Army because they're all on holiday.
ISM: On holiday? Then what are they doing demolishing houses in Rafah and shooting and international volunteers for?
Diplomat: I'm sorry but we don't have anyone we can contact in the Army.
ISM: Then phone the Department of Foreign Affairs and tell them to contact the Army. [The standard protocol under such circumstances.]
Diplomat: What are they doing in the area?
ISM: They're trying to stop house... Can I speak to the consul please?
Diplomat: Please hold a minute....
Ingrid Barzel: How can I help you.
ISM: This is an emergency call about a group of International Peace Activists in Rafah Town that are being fired upon by Israeli troops. I'm phoning you because I want you to get in contact with the Army and advise them that there are American nationals in the area and ask them to please exercise restraint.
Ingrid Barzel: Please advise your people there to leave the area.
ISM: Look they're in the area and they don't intend to go anywhere. They're trying to stop houses being demolished by military bulldozers.
Ingrid Barzel: We have a travel advisory against traveling to the Gaza Strip and if these people are there they are there illegally. [This is untrue to enter the Gaza Strip one has to have a special authorisation stamp in one's passport and all the Rafah activists have one.]
ISM: What if one of them gets killed? Will you hide behind your excuses then?
Ingrid Barzel: They're not excuses. It's State Department procedure endorsed by the Secretary of State.
ISM: So what you're saying is you take no responsibility for the welfare of your nationals dong peace work in the Gaza Strip even if this means one of them gets killed because of your inaction?
Ingrid Barzel: We do not accept any responsibility for anyone who ignores our travel advisories and illegally enters the Gaza Strip.
ISM; What is your name?
[Pause]
Ingrid Barzel: I'd be happy to give you my name. It's Ingrid Barzel.
ISM: Right, now I know how useless you are I'll never phone you again. I also got in touch with the British consulate who said they'd phone me back but seem to have got in touch with the Gaza military headquarters and the Dutch consulate which was on holiday and had an answering machine operating.

So they stole it from the people who already lived there, and killed any who resisted.
So they stole it from the people who already lived there, and killed any who resisted.
No, they didn't steal it. They bought land, immigrated, and built communities up from the late 1800's though the mid 1900's, and control over that land area was given to them by the current owners (britain, who handed it to the UN). No land was stolen. Everyone in Israel of every religion was made an Israeli citizen. THere were no refugees, no one booted out or scared away until arab nations declared a war of extermination on israel later in 1948. Then, tehre were arab refugees from israel and jewish refugees from arab countries. israel accepted the jewish refugees. arab countries rejected the arab refugees and just kept waging attacks and terrorism against israel.
Reality. Try it, it'll help you.
Reality. Try it, it'll help you.
I compare people that are sure that "their kind" is better than every one else with nazis. Zionism seems to make a lot of people believe Jews are better than other people.
They had their little strip, although not completely safe, protected by the strongest army the middle east had ever seen. But that wasn't enough for them.
After preventing an attack from surrounding states, which they believed was imminent, they went on becoming occupiers.
With total disregard for people already living (or fleed) there they made their settlements on the hilltops, as watchtowers in immense camps.
The danger from an imminent attack from Egypt and Jordan is far gone. The danger from an imminent attack from Syria becomes more and more imaginary.
There's no need for the settlements anymore.
Abandon them. Please.

Why would anyone protest a funeral?
What stupid comments. Zionism isn't about believing you are "better" than someone. ZIonism was IN RESPONSE to about 2000 years of the world treating Jews like complete crap, usually simply for being Jewish, and the formation of a Jewish homeland. Zionism is no more about "supremecy" than America gives special treatment to Americans, or France giving special treatment to French people are members of their circle of countries, or Britain giving special privledges to Canadians that Mexicans don't get, or Australia giving special visa privledges to Brits that Russians don't get, etc. Every single country on this planet gives some privledges to certain groups when it comes to immigration, and Israel was formed to give Jews in need a homeland. Which you and many people seem againt and intentionally try to demonize the concept of.
It is ridiculous that the world is still obsessed with demonizing the concept. If you think that Israel's "occupation" should end, say so. It's debatable that ending the "occupation" would actually cause terrorism against Israel to end, since Hamas themselves say it won't. But, whatever, the point here is you don't have to lie about the definition of zionism and demonize Israel excessively in the process.

I cant help to comment.
The shit that happened to Rachel Corrie affected me just as much as Sept 11th Tragedy. My heart sank to the floor. I couldnt work. I dont know exactly why,..but this story hit me hard. I thought of the courage/and BALLS she had, to put herself in that situation and die for what she believed in. She was standing up for what was right and doing it not by carrying an M-16, but a bullhorn. Think about that.
Upsetting to me is all of this calling her out and portraying her as anti-american .(Not specifically here, but in the papers and tightly controlled media, if you hear anything other than IRAQ). In my mind, She was more american than anything I heard of, more human than fricken jesus.. She died for a belief of what was right..Nobody forced her to go there...and it is pretty certain what she accomplished through her sacrifice made my life and what I have done pretty much meaningless.
What upsets me also is the fact that I hear people saying "she was asking for it" or " she put herself in harms way".. I am sure all these fucks would have a heart to shake the driver of the bulldozers hand. Congratulations..youre a shitty human being. Or all these other pea brains calling out shame on using this this story to demonize Israel. I say fuck that. What happened in the past to Israel is no excuss to carry out thier bullshit nazi ass oppressive actions on a people who are desperately trying to live a dignified life on a day to day basis. Dont try to bullshit me and play the people of Israel the victim..On one side of the wall, that so called "Victim" has running water, a job, a nice irrigated green lawn, and is backed by a military might that is also,on the other side of the wall where you had Rachel Corrie and the people (HUMAN BEINGS)..that are being contantly humilliated.
What happened to Rachel is a tiny compared of what goes on there every day. For those of you who dont know what happens everyday and cry over the demonizing of Israel, look in to it. Read the letter Rachel sent to her parents before she died.. Read stuff from NY times reporter Chris Hedges. Read both sides of the story (That means you will have to get unglued from CNN or MSNBC) and use that tiny little skull and think!!
Rachel Corrie .. Rest in Peace.
her actions will not be a waste... Clearly her death showed the arrogance and complete disregard for life of the Iraeli millitary. and it brought more awareness of this here in the states.
I pray for a better world. Its unfortunate that praying wont DO SHIT.
