Corrie, 23, a student at The Evergreen State College in Olympia, Wash., died Sunday, March 16, 2003, in the Gaza Strip (news - web sites) city of Rafah while trying to stop a bulldozer from tearing down a Palestinian physician's home. She fell in front of the machine, which ran over her and then backed up, witnesses said. Israeli military spokesman Capt. Jacob Dallal called her death an accident. ..."No one will see our demonstration." Others in Rafah echo this
sense of invisibility: "We make protest here for Iraq, but we need to think
about ourselves. Things are bad enough here. Nobody here likes Saddam Hussein.
We make protest for Iraq because we know what this is like and we do not want
this for the people of Iraq. Saddam Hussein is a king. He will not die. He will
not be hungry. He will not suffer. We make a protest for Iraq. Because we have
experienced this. Who makes protest for us?"

A later report from ISM Media Coordinator Michael Shaikh in Beit Sahour offered more details about the events: The confrontation between the ISM and the Israeli Army had been under way for two hours when Rachel was run over. Rachel and the other activists had clearly identified themselves as unarmed international peace activists throughout the confrontation.
The Israeli Army are attempting to dishonour her memory by claiming that Rachel was killed accidentally when she ran in front of the bulldozer. Eye-witnesses to the murder insist that this is totally untrue. Rachel was sitting in the path of the bulldozer as it advanced towards her. When the bulldozer refused to stop or turn aside she climbed up onto the mound of dirt and rubble being gathered in front of it wearing a fluorescent jacket to look directly at the driver who kept on advancing. The bulldozer continued to advance so that she was pulled under the pile of dirt and rubble. After she had disappeared from view the driver kept advancing until the bulldozer was completely on top of her. The driver did not lift the bulldozer blade and so she was crushed beneath it. Then the driver backed off and the seven other ISM activists taking part in the action rushed to dig out her body. An ambulance rushed her to A-Najar hospital where she died.
"This is a regrettable accident," Israeli Defence Forces [sic] spokesman Captain Jacob Dallal was reported as saying in Ha'aretz newspaper. "We are dealing with a group of protesters who were acting very irresponsibly, putting everyone in danger."
Members of the Israeli army and associated Israeli settler paramilitary units have been responsible for the killing of 2,181 Palestinians and the injuring of another 22,218 between 29 September 2000 and 14 March 2003.
In addition to the killing of Rachel Corrie by the bulldozer driver, Israeli troops have shot and killed several other internationals in different incidents during the Intifada: German doctor Harald Fischer, Italian cameraman Rafaeli Ciriello, and British United Nations worker Iain Hook.

-----Feb 14 2003. Previous near-death of ISM activists by Israeli
bulldozers in Rafah, Gaza. Emphasis added.-------
http://electronicintifada.net/v2/article1253.shtml
Excerpt from March 16 2003 article begins:
At 2 pm on Friday [Feb 14 2003] the ISM received word that Israeli military bulldozers were demolishing houses in Rafah town in the south of the Gaza Strip. The destruction is part of Israel's "Apartheid Wall" policy towards the Occupied Territories. Whereby Palestinians communities will be sealed from the outside world by a massive series of walls, complete with towers from which military sharpshooters can monitor their activities. The section of the Wall under construction near Rafah stretches along the entire length of Gaza's border with Egypt. To give the snipers in the wall's towers clear fields of fire, the Israeli occupation forces in Gaza intend to demolish all the houses within 70 - 100 metres of the wall
As soon as they received word of the demolitions seven activists (3 US, 3 UK and 1 Dutch) left ISM Rafah headquarters in Gaza to resist them. The site of the demolitions was in an area of Rafah known of "Block O" that is overlooked by four of the wall's towers including the infamous Saleh e-Deen Tower from which Israeli snipers have murdered several of Rafah's residents. When they arrived the activists saw a row of six houses being systematically bulldozed by two Israeli military bulldozers guarded by a tank. They were unable to approach the bulldozers directly because of landmines but found an alternative route to the devastation, which bypassed the minefield.
As soon as the activists began to approach the bulldozers they were fired upon from the towers and the tanks which directed rifle and machine gun fire at the ground in front of them. Using their megaphone the activists announced that they were unarmed international peace activists and continued to advance. The tank and the soldiers in the towers continued to fire warning shots at them but the activists refused to submit to their intimidation and continued their approach. ...
Meanwhile [Feb 14 2003] the ISM activists had reached the building that the bulldozers were demolishing while the tank and the towers had fired warning shots at them every step of the way. Two of the activists then stepped into the partially destroyed building preventing the bulldozers from any further destruction while the tank fired its machine gun over their heads. The bulldozer then retreated but then the tank rolled forward to within three feet of them and an uneasy stalemate followed until the tanks backed away. Then the bulldozer came forward again as the other five activists rushed to join their companions in the building and the tank resumed firing its machine gun.
This time the bulldozer didn't stop and five of the activists were able to scramble away while two others became trapped by the bulldozer in a corner of the building. When the bulldozer found its path blocked by rumble and backed off before resuming its advance the two were able to get away and stand on some barrels next to the building to photograph and film the destruction but the bulldozer then began ramming the barrels.

Tiananmen 'tank man' still at large
The unknown protester brought an entire line of tanks to a halt
The lone Chinese protester who brought a column of tanks to a standstill in Tiananmen Square during the 1989 crackdown was never arrested and is still at large, a Hong Kong-based dissident group has said.
Seven hundred people were killed in the Tiananmen Square crackdown |
However, the most memorable images are of a young man, carrying what appears to be a shopping bag, who refused to move out of the way of the advancing tanks.
He then climbed onto the leading tank and spoke to the driver.
The Information Centre for Human Rights and Democracy Movement in China says it has obtained official documents that show the Chinese government does not know what happened to him.
Although the man was initially identified as Wang Weilin, the documents suggest the name was false.
In response to an inquiry, President Jiang Zemin is said to have blamed journalists for giving authorities the wrong name. The Chinese government gave up looking for the man after checking lists of the dead and imprisoned.
Time magazine has cited the unidentified protester as one of the "top 20 leaders and revolutionaries" of the 20th century.
Dubbing him "the Unknown Rebel," the American news journal said his moment of fame was seen by more people than laid eyes on Winston Churchill, Albert Einstein and James Joyce combined.
Chinese authorities sent tanks into Tiananmen Square in the early hours of June 4, 1989 to break up an extended demonstration by Chinese student activists. Several hundred people were reported to have been killed.
China has never admitted publicly that there were any deaths as a result of
the crackdown.

Israel is just as racist, evil and immoral as apartheid ("Jim Crow") America was; ISRAEL is just as, RACIST, EVIL and IMMORAL as apartheid South Africa was; Israel is just as racist, evil and immoral as Nazi Germany was up until 1942 (long after the Nazi persecution began against the European JEWS when they were rising to power in the early '30's, but before the death camps started in the last few years of the war, 1939-1945). Only world public opinion keeps Israeli Jews - ironically - from commencing "THE FINAL SOLUTION" to "THE PALESTINIAN PROBLEM." The majority of the Israeli public already supports the complete ethnic cleansing--total population transfer--of Palestinians from Palestine.
The Israeli flag belongs in the pantheon of evil flags--right along side to the Confederate flag, the old apartheid South African flag, and the NAZI flag, as well as any other such flags. (I'm sure that Native Americans would put the American flag right up alongside there too.)
For those so-called "liberal/progressive" Zionists who recoil at my bluntness, it is time for you to WAKE UP and accept that Israel IS a RACIST, EVIL, WICKED and IMMORAL state whose RACIST ideology needs to be abolished right along with other racist ideologies.
The courageous Bay Area Jewish-American veteran photojournalist, pro-Palestinian human rights activist, and anti-Zionist public speaker, Jeffrey Blankfort confronted some Zionist Jews at the Saturday anti-war protest rally in Jefferson Park in San Francisco, and told them that the Israeli flag that they had wrapped around themselves is just as "RACIST" as the Nazi flag was in Germany.
I am sickened to hear of Rachel's death, and the many more innocent Palestinians who are killed by Israel every day, and my heart goes out to Rachel Corrie's family, as well as to all those Palestinian families whose loved ones are killed by the state of Israel too. Rachel was a courageous person, because she didn't have to be there, bearing witness, trying to protect innocents, and doing Peace.
Listen to the letter that Rachel Corrie sent her parents. It describes a world in which Israeli soldiers and settlers have been literally *terrorizing* Palestinian civilians non-stop, day and night. This is what she was over there to stop. This is what the UN was designed to stop but because the US government has blocked it from fulfilling its role, the ISM has become Palestinians' only protection.

Conflicting reports on Rachel Corey's tragic death
A quick comparison of the events as reported by differing sources clearly shows confusion among the eyewitnesses. No doubt these conflicting stories will only hamper the investigation demanded by US officials. Did Rachel stand, sit, lay or stummble into the path of the Israeli bulldozer? Sadly, although there are photos of her last minutes, apparently none captured the definitive moment.
from the Arab News
. . . The woman, identified as 23-year-old Rachel Corey, was lying on the ground in front of an army bulldozer when she was covered with large quantities of sand, Ali Al-Shaar, a witness to the incident, told Reuters. "The American girl was lying in front of the bulldozer when the bulldozer took sand and put it over her," Shaar said. Corey was taken to Al-Najar Hospital in the southern Gaza Strip where doctors said she died from severe skull and chest fractures. "The bulldozer put sand on her and kept crushing her," said Nicholas Dure, a fellow member of the International Solidarity Campaign to Protect the Palestinian People protest group.
from the International Solidarity Movement
. . . An ambulance rushed her to A-Najar hospital where she died.
from the Citizens for Fair Legislation
. . . Witnesses said Rachel Corey, from the state of Washington, was trying to stop a bulldozer from tearing down a building in Rafah, Palestine. A witness, Greg Schnabel, 28, from Chicago, said: "[Rachel Corey] waved for the bulldozer to stop. She fell down and the bulldozer kept going. We yelled 'stop, stop,' and the bulldozer didn't stop at all. It had completely run over her and then it reversed and ran back over her."
from the NY Times
. . . When the bulldozer approached a house today, Ms. Corrie, who was wearing a bright orange jacket, dropped to her knees, a practice that members of the group to which she belonged, the International Solidarity Movement, have used repeatedly, her colleagues at the scene said. As the bulldozer reached her without slowing up, she began to rise, but was trapped beneath a pile of dirt generated by its blade and the blade itself, said one member of the group, Tom Dale, who said he was standing about 30 feet away. "We were shouting and waving our arms at the driver," said Mr. Dale, who is British. "We even had a megaphone. But the bulldozer kept going until she was under the body or the tracks of the bulldozer." The bulldozer stopped for a few seconds and pulled back, Mr. Dale added. Her colleagues rushed to Ms. Corrie, who was bleeding from the head and face and badly wounded, but still breathing. An ambulance took her to Najar Hospital, where she died. She had a fractured skull and other injuries, said Dr. Ali Moussa, a hospital administrator.
from the Palestine Chronicle
. . . "She was sitting in the path of the bulldozer. The bulldozer saw her and ran over her. She ended up completely underneath it," fellow activist Joseph Smith told Agence France-Presse (AFP). "He absolutely knew she was there," added Smith, a 20-year-old student from Missouri.
Making matters worse is the ambiguous chronolgy of the photos as presented. Consider the following statements also from the Palestine Chronicle
. . . The peace activists from the International Solidarity Movement were blocking the paths of two bulldozers and an Israeli tank tearing down Palestinian buildings in the town, which sits on the Gaza Strip's Israeli-controlled border with Egypt. Smith said the group had been active for around an hour, standing on condemned structures and putting themselves in the pathway of the bulldozers, one of which had already pushed an activist against a line of barbed wire.
Now take a careful look at these two photos; 1) a clearly marked Rachel Corrie, holding a megaphone, confronts an Israeli bulldozer driver attempting to demolish a Palestinian home, 2) other peace activists tend to Rachel after being injured by the Israeli bulldozer driver. Notice that the backgrounds do not match -- the outline of the hills, trees, and homes in the distance are clearly different -- so photo #1 can not the presumed "Before" shot as implied. In fact, it isn't even clear if these photos are of the same bulldozer. I do not want to make light of this unfortunate loss, but neither do I wish to see it turned into propaganda. I must urge the ISM members to turn over every roll of film shot on the day of Rachel's death to an internationally recognized neutral party, such as the Red Cross, so that an honest investigation can be conducted.
They should be dealt with just like the neo-Nazi crap which they seem to be trying to emulate.
Rachel got up on the shovel, looked at the driver, fell back, probably in stages, got caught on something, such as rubble, the sand, the dirt, the blade or a combination of all the above in front of the moving blade.
Observers would see her going from standing on the blade, to "kneeling," to horizontal, to covered over, to driven over.
In any case, the driver didn't stop.
Just like they pushed activists back with the shovel before, into rubble, buildings, etc..

Poll. Huge unpopularity of USA worldwide. Pew Research Center.
People worldwide want Iraq's Saddam gone. Americans, in particular, just don't understand why their little glorious war should wait a few months to get the Europeans or Muslim nations onboard first. Or why no real attempt should be made to truly liberate Palestine first after 35 years of US vetoes. Or why no real concerted continuous increasing attempt should be made to contain and disarm Iraq. And further erode Iraqi military support of Saddam in a later war, and thus save many Iraqi and American lives. And possibly even thereby foment a coup that would save hundreds of thousands of Iraqi lives in war.
Palestinians and Iraqis are just brown-skinned infidel savages, though, to most Americans, just like the majority of people in the USA drug-war slave-labor prison gulags. And we Americans just gotta "win" a war for once. Europeans have drug reform. USA has 2 million inmates due mostly to a drug war that nearly everyone says is failing. War fever in America. Gotta have some kind of war.
Interesting spin going on. Foreign media point out the consistent polls showing the overwhelming unpopularity of the USA worldwide. For example; the latest Pew Research Center poll taken March 10-17, 2003, and released March 18. Whereas the US media mention the various latest US polls, but often bury the latest international poll results at the end of articles and news reports - after much spin and/or disinfo.

Likewise, even a number of prominent Jews and even some morally conscious Jewish Holocaust survivors and Nazi resistance fighters--even, with hateful, defiant hubris, some Israeli military officers--have compared Israel's Zionist regimes, toward "The Palestinian Problem", with the Nazi regime (up until the Nazi death camps started in 1942, the last few years of WWII). These anti-Zionist Jews see Israel's "The Final Solution" as the desire for total population transfer--the complete ethnic cleansing (driven out, in part, by Israeli massacres) of the Palestinians from Palestine.
How shameful.
Rachel Corrie represents the best of the USA, and the Palestinians very much respect that. They also respect sovereignty, because that is what they desire. So they are willing to honor our flag, because they want their own sovereignty and flag honored. Rachel Corrie explains well in an email about why she burned the combined American/Israeli flag she drew. Go to the original article above to find the link.
I have met Palestinians. Have you?
No Palestine, No Peace. Brown-skinned Palestinians, like the majority of U.S. drug-war inmates, are ignored by racist stupid white male Americans. I am a white male, so I can say this. Read below how a brave white American woman got treated by your tax dollars used by some Israelis. This is the "freedom" the USA has given to the world lately.

Four eyewitnesses describe the murder of Rachel Corrie
Tom Dale, Greg Schnabel, Richard Purssell, and Joe Smith, International Solidarity Movement, 19 March 2003
American peace activist Rachel Corrie was murdered by an Israeli bulldozer driver on 16 March 2003 while attempting to defend a Palestinian doctor's home from demolition. Four of the seven International Solidarity Movement members present have written their recollections of the incident: Tom Dale (US), Greg Schnabel (UK), Richard Purssell (UK), and Joe Smith (US). Greg and Richard's accounts are more formal accounts. Tom and Joe's accounts are excerpted from e-mails to friends and families. Courtesy of the International Solidarity Movement.

From this photo, there can be no doubt that the Israeli bulldozer driver could clearly see Rachel and that this was no accident.
Well, just to paraphrase a tad
From this photo, there can be no doubt that Rachel could clearly see the Israeli bulldozer and that this was no accident. T.S.T.L. Too Stupid To Live.
She was not over there sharing love and peace. She was over there sharing hatred of the U.S. A loving protester would not scream and burn the flag and invoke the hatred there. A loving protester would try to turn the hate to friendship. She was there to incite not embrace

She was turning hate into friendship. She showed that not all Americans are assholes.

The hypocrisy of the USA is amazing. Why not liberate the West Bank and Gaza from brutal Israeli occupation? Just keep on rolling through Iraq, then through Jordan (get permission first) then on into the West Bank.
But then there is no oil under the West Bank and Gaza is there?
At least if the USA occupies them, then there will no longer be any confusion about who is REALLY responsible for any further brutality there.
It will no longer be the U.S. proxy army consisting of Israelis using U.S. bulldozers, helicopters, jets, etc..

Joseph Smith, writing from Rafah, Gaza Strip

In December 2001, 70 activists used their bodies to protect Palestinian Authority Chairman Yasser Arafat's Ramallah headquarters from IDF tanks. During last year's stand-off at the Church of the Nativity in Bethlehem, ISM members broke into the church to act as human shields for some 200 Palestinian terrorists hiding inside.
Her organization is the same one that tried to protect the armed Palestinian terrorists who holed themselves up last year, and the same organization that tried to act as human shields when Arafat's building was being surrounded. They were not just protecting the innocent. They protected armed Palestinian militants, and terrorists whose goal is not the "liberation" of Palestinian land, but the "liberation" of Palestinian land and the destruction of Israel.
Imagine if Osama Bin Laden was in a building, and you were in a car and you wanted to ram the building to get at him, and some "protester" tried to block you by using herself as a human shield. Would you stop? You'd probably hit the gas pedal.
That day, Corrie was trying to protect a house, but her same organiation also protects Palestinian Hamas terrorists, Arafat, and every Palestinian, regarless of whether they are innocent civilians or crazed lunatics who think God will reward them for committing suicide while taking "infidels" with them.
Also, it should be considered that Israel gains nothing from running her over. "Israel" didn't do it. One driver did. Clearly this is not standard policy of the Israeli government. Israel benefits nothing from hurting innocent people, and Israel certainly doesn't benefit from this type of publicity. The driver should be blamed, and Rachel Corrie should be blamed, not "Israel."
If Palestinians want Israel to leave them alone, they should call off their self-destructive intifada, get some reasonable leaders, and put an end to Hamas and terrorism. Israel would respond in kind. Perhaps when Palestinians call off their terrorist attacks, Israel will be nice enough to offer the land-for-peace deal they made a few years ago. The one that Palestinians responded to with terror and an armed intifada.
As for Corrie, there's a difference between a peaceful protester, and a peaceful protester who acts as a human shield to protect terrorists. Her organization does both of those things. THey protect innocent Palestinians, and they protected the crazed, killer Palestinian terrorists who intentionally kill innocent Jewish Israelis, and then brag about it.
(To her mother)
Love you. Really miss you. I have bad nightmares about tanks and bulldozers outside our house and you and me inside. Sometimes the adrenaline acts as an anesthetic for weeks and then in the evening or at night it just hits me again - a little bit of the reality of the situation. I am really scared for the people here. Yesterday, I watched a father lead his two tiny children, holding his hands, out into the sight of tanks and a sniper tower and bulldozers and Jeeps because he thought his house was going to be exploded. Jenny and I stayed in the house with several women and two small babies. It was our mistake in translation that caused him to think it was his house that was being exploded. In fact, the Israeli army was in the process of detonating an explosive in the ground nearby - one that appears to have been planted by Palestinian resistance.
This is in the area where Sunday about 150 men were rounded up and contained outside the settlement with gunfire over their heads and around them, while tanks and bulldozers destroyed 25 greenhouses - the livelihoods for 300 people. The explosive was right in front of the greenhouses - right in the point of entry for tanks that might come back again. I was terrified to think that this man felt it was less of a risk to walk out in view of the tanks with his kids than to stay in his house. I was really scared that they were all going to be shot and I tried to stand between them and the tank. This happens every day, but just this father walking out with his two little kids just looking very sad, just happened to get my attention more at this particular moment, probably because I felt it was our translation problems that made him leave.
I thought a lot about what you said on the phone about Palestinian violence not helping the situation. Sixty thousand workers from Rafah worked in Israel two years ago. Now only 600 can go to Israel for jobs. Of these 600, many have moved, because the three checkpoints between here and Ashkelon (the closest city in Israel) make what used to be a 40-minute drive, now a 12-hour or impassible journey. In addition, what Rafah identified in 1999 as sources of economic growth are all completely destroyed - the Gaza international airport (runways demolished, totally closed); the border for trade with Egypt (now with a giant Israeli sniper tower in the middle of the crossing); access to the ocean (completely cut off in the last two years by a checkpoint and the Gush Katif settlement). The count of homes destroyed in Rafah since the beginning of this intifada is up around 600, by and large people with no connection to the resistance but who happen to live along the border. I think it is maybe official now that Rafah is the poorest place in the world. There used to be a middle class here - recently. We also get reports that in the past, Gazan flower shipments to Europe were delayed for two weeks at the Erez crossing for security inspections. You can imagine the value of two-week-old cut flowers in the European market, so that market dried up. And then the bulldozers come and take out people's vegetable farms and gardens. What is left for people? Tell me if you can think of anything. I can't.
If any of us had our lives and welfare completely strangled, lived with children in a shrinking place where we knew, because of previous experience, that soldiers and tanks and bulldozers could come for us at any moment and destroy all the greenhouses that we had been cultivating for however long, and did this while some of us were beaten and held captive with 149 other people for several hours - do you think we might try to use somewhat violent means to protect whatever fragments remained? I think about this especially when I see orchards and greenhouses and fruit trees destroyed - just years of care and cultivation. I think about you and how long it takes to make things grow and what a labour of love it is. I really think, in a similar situation, most people would defend themselves as best they could. I think Uncle Craig would. I think probably Grandma would. I think I would.
You asked me about non-violent resistance.
When that explosive detonated yesterday it broke all the windows in the family's house. I was in the process of being served tea and playing with the two small babies. I'm having a hard time right now. Just feel sick to my stomach a lot from being doted on all the time, very sweetly, by people who are facing doom. I know that from the United States, it all sounds like hyperbole. Honestly, a lot of the time the sheer kindness of the people here, coupled with the overwhelming evidence of the wilful destruction of their lives, makes it seem unreal to me. I really can't believe that something like this can happen in the world without a bigger outcry about it. It really hurts me, again, like it has hurt me in the past, to witness how awful we can allow the world to be. I felt after talking to you that maybe you didn't completely believe me. I think it's actually good if you don't, because I do believe pretty much above all else in the importance of independent critical thinking. And I also realise that with you I'm much less careful than usual about trying to source every assertion that I make. A lot of the reason for that is I know that you actually do go and do your own research. But it makes me worry about the job I'm doing. All of the situation that I tried to enumerate above - and a lot of other things - constitutes a somewhat gradual - often hidden, but nevertheless massive - removal and destruction of the ability of a particular group of people to survive. This is what I am seeing here. The assassinations, rocket attacks and shooting of children are atrocities - but in focusing on them I'm terrified of missing their context. The vast majority of people here - even if they had the economic means to escape, even if they actually wanted to give up resisting on their land and just leave (which appears to be maybe the less nefarious of Sharon's possible goals), can't leave. Because they can't even get into Israel to apply for visas, and because their destination countries won't let them in (both our country and Arab countries). So I think when all means of survival is cut off in a pen (Gaza) which people can't get out of, I think that qualifies as genocide. Even if they could get out, I think it would still qualify as genocide. Maybe you could look up the definition of genocide according to international law. I don't remember it right now. I'm going to get better at illustrating this, hopefully. I don't like to use those charged words. I think you know this about me. I really value words. I really try to illustrate and let people draw their own conclusions.
Anyway, I'm rambling. Just want to write to my Mom and tell her that I'm witnessing this chronic, insidious genocide and I'm really scared, and questioning my fundamental belief in the goodness of human nature. This has to stop. I think it is a good idea for us all to drop everything and devote our lives to making this stop. I don't think it's an extremist thing to do anymore. I still really want to dance around to Pat Benatar and have boyfriends and make comics for my coworkers. But I also want this to stop. Disbelief and horror is what I feel. Disappointment. I am disappointed that this is the base reality of our world and that we, in fact, participate in it. This is not at all what I asked for when I came into this world. This is not at all what the people here asked for when they came into this world. This is not the world you and Dad wanted me to come into when you decided to have me. This is not what I meant when I looked at Capital Lake and said: "This is the wide world and I'm coming to it." I did not mean that I was coming into a world where I could live a comfortable life and possibly, with no effort at all, exist in complete unawareness of my participation in genocide. More big explosions somewhere in the distance outside.
When I come back from Palestine, I probably will have nightmares and constantly feel guilty for not being here, but I can channel that into more work. Coming here is one of the better things I've ever done. So when I sound crazy, or if the Israeli military should break with their racist tendency not to injure white people, please pin the reason squarely on the fact that I am in the midst of a genocide which I am also indirectly supporting, and for which my government is largely responsible.
I love you and Dad. Sorry for the diatribe. OK, some strange men next to me just gave me some peas, so I need to eat and thank them.
Rachel

Startling findings about CNN's NewsNight with Aaron Brown |

PMWATCH – February 20, 2003 -- Editorial quality control seems to be suffering at CNN’s NewsNight with Aaron Brown. At a time when fair and contextual reporting on the Middle East is essential if Americans are to properly gauge and influence U.S. foreign policy, NewsNight focuses vastly disproportionate attention on Israeli casualties, perpetuating the public misperception that Israelis are suffering far more than Palestinians. Palestine Media Watch (PMWATCH) found that NewsNight reported 74% of Israeli deaths but only 18% of Palestinian Deaths. They reported 83% of Israeli deaths under 18 years old but only 22% of Palestinian deaths under 18 years old. And while Palestinian civilian deaths accounted for 40% of the overall deaths during the period monitored, only 7% of NewsNight’s coverage was devoted to Palestinian civilians. In fact, NewsNight spent nearly twice as much of its coverage on the conflict reporting on the deaths of Israeli soldiers as they did on Palestinian civilians. <SNIP>-----Article excerpt ends------ |
U.S. tanks should first liberate West Bank and Gaza from Israelis. Then maybe the future "freedom" envisioned under U.S. occupation of Iraq might have more credibility. But then the West Bank and Gaza don't have oil. And Israel already has nukes, unlike Iraq. Israeli nukes and armaments helped paid for with U.S. dollars. To this day. And Israel is EVIL enough to use those nukes on US tanks and troops liberating the West Bank and Gaza as required for over 35 years according to UN resolution 242. So why not just cut off the billions of dollars of yearly U.S. aid to Israel? And if that doesn't work, then why not threaten to smart-bomb Israeli military installations until they follow UN resolutions?

In fact, NewsNight spent nearly twice as much of its coverage on the conflict reporting on the deaths of Israeli soldiers as they did on Palestinian civilians. It is precisely because NewsNight with Aaron Brown holds itself out as a “thinking person’s newscast” in a media universe of disinformation and hysterical reporting that NewsNight’s shortcomings are of enormous concern. Failure to provide fair and accurate reporting of events in the Palestinian-Israeli conflict further endangers the opportunities for peace in the Middle East by failing to educate viewers about the true nature of the conflict leaving them to make uninformed decisions about its source and solutions. PMWATCH calls on Newsnight and Mr. Brown to address these issues in his signature “Page Two” commentary and to redress the editorial failings made visible by this report. For the full report, please see: http://www.pmwatch.org/pmw/reports/newsnight/021903.html To send a letter, go to: http://www.pmwatch.org/pmw/mediocrity/editCall.asp?essayID=92 For more on Aaron Brown, see: http://www.cnn.com/CNN/anchors_reporters/brown.aaron.html Questions or comments about this report may be directed to David Nassar at 703-981-9922 or Ahmed Bouzid at (610) 993 – 0608. The transcripts were reviewed for coverage of the conflict and relevant passages from the transcript were excerpted. Following this review, PMWATCH searched the web records of B’Tselem, an Israeli human rights organization, for their account of Palestinian deaths and Israeli deaths during the same period. Those deaths were then cross-referenced with NewsNight coverage. Only deaths that occurred Monday thru Friday were recorded since NewsNight does not air on Saturdays and Sundays. A quantitative comparison was then conducted of NewsNight’s coverage. PMWATCH tallied the number of deaths on the Palestinian side and the number of deaths on the Israeli side, while counting how many of each was covered by NewsNight. ABOUT PMWATCH Palestine Media Watch (http://www.pmwatch.org/ ) is a grassroots media watch group that monitors the American media's coverage of the Middle East. Its mission is to closely monitor news and editorial coverage by major US media outlets and push for a more balanced and informed portrayal of the Middle East conflict. Palestine Media Watch has officers across the United States, in Israel, the West Bank, and Gaza, and boasts an active and growing membership of over four hundred people. |

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
(1) Advocacy and facilitation of terrorism
· ISM/PSM is on record as advocating terroristic violence.
o A University of Michigan PSM organizer, Fadi Kiblawi, wrote that he "wants to strap a bomb to [his] chest and kill."
o New Jersey Solidarity leader Charlotte Kates defines Israeli children as "legitimate targets."
o ISM/PSM founders Adam Shapiro and Huwaida Arraf say that the Palestinian "resistance" must include violent methods for which Israeli civilians are legitimate targets.
· ISM/PSM activists have provided "safe house" assistance to terrorists in Israel.
· A member of Al-Awda (Right of Return), an ISM/PSM affiliate, allegedly posted a solicitation for a "martyr" to bomb the Hadassah Hospital in Israel, where Ariel Sharon is being treated for a stroke.
· At the 2nd PSM Conference at the University of Michigan in October 2002, the attendees chanted "Ittbach al yahood" = "Kill the Jews."
(2) Recruitment of American college students as "human shields"
· ISM director George Rishmawi says it is useful to recruit American college students for the purpose of getting them hurt or killed in confrontations with Israeli security forces.
· PSM spokesperson Nadeem Muaddi posted an essay calling for Christians to offer themselves as "martyrs" for the Palestinian cause. The context of his essay suggests that he means human shields.
(3) Promotion of religious intolerance and homophobic and sexist violence. ISM/PSM is an agent for the Palestinian governmental entities that:
· Treat Christians as dhimmis (second-class citizens).
· Sanction and condone domestic violence, including so-called "honor killings" of women.
· Imprison, torture, and kill gays because of their sexual orientation.

ISM/PSM activities
Advocacy and Facilitation of Terroristic Violence
Advocacy of Terrorism
(1) "Fadi Kiblawi is far from being an outspoken critic of terrorism. While an undergrad at U. Mich., he sponsored the national convention of the Palestine Solidarity Movement, a group that is on record endorsing terror bombing as a legitimate tool of Palestinian "resistance." Furthermore, Mr. Kiblawi actually wrote an article in a U. Michigan student publication in which he expressed his desire "to strap a bomb to one's chest and kill. …The enemy is not just overseas, the enemy is also amongst us."
o A Google search for "strap a bomb to one's chest and kill" should allow independent verification of this information. See also http://www.dafka.org/NewsGen.asp?S=4&PageID=945
(2) New Jersey Solidarity leader Charlotte Kates refuses to condemn terrorist bombings and defines Israeli children as legitimate targets.
o http://www.thejewishpress.com/news_article.asp?article=2709
"Charlotte Kates, the organizer of the New Jersey Solidarity Movement— an offshoot of the International Solidarity Movement— has refused to condemn homicide bombings and other means of 'armed resistance.'"
o http://www.discoverthenetwork.org/individualProfile.asp?indid=944
Charlotte Kates has said that Israeli CHILDREN are "legitimate" targets for Palestinian suicide bombers.
o http://home.comcast.net/~jat.action/ISM_info.htm "ISM organizers, however, occasionally forget to speak in code and actually say precisely what they mean. Charlotte Kates, leader of the New Jersey chapter of the ISM and organizer of the ISM's third National Convention, scheduled to take place on the Rutgers campus from October 10-12, explained that the ISM supports suicide bombing. "We support Palestinians' right to resist occupation and oppression, and do not feel that it is our place as a solidarity movement to dictate tactics of resistance to the Palestinian people. Why is there something particularly horrible about 'suicide bombing' - except for the extreme dedication conveyed in the resistance fighter's willingness to use his or her own body to fight?" (2003 by MidEastWeb and Ami Isseroff)
(3) Two of the ISM's leaders, Adam Shapiro and Huwaida Arraf, defended the use of violence against Israelis in a January 2002 article in the Palestine Chronicle:
o http://palestinechronicle.com/article.php?story=20020129050221695
"In actuality, nonviolence is not enough. Rather, what is needed is nonviolent direct action against the occupation." "The Palestinian resistance must take on a variety of characteristics— both nonviolent and violent. But most importantly it must develop a strategy involving both aspects. No other successful nonviolent movement was able to achieve what it did without a concurrent violent movement. In India militants attacked British outposts and interests while Gandhi conducted his campaign, while the Black Panther Movement and its earlier incarnations existed side-by-side with the Civil Rights Movement in the United States."
o http://home.comcast.net/~jat.action/ISM_essay_ref12.htm
"Nevertheless, he [Shapiro] justifies the Palestinian armed resistance against Israel as long as it is targeting Israeli soldiers and Jewish settlers in the West Bank and Gaza Strip. Otherwise, he is not in favor of suicide bombings." Settlers are civilians so he is advocating the suicide bombing of civilians. Furthermore, even soldiers are legitimate targets only for other soldiers and partisans who carry their weapons openly and wear uniforms or badges "distinguishable at a distance."
(4) The Georgetown Hoya (January 27 2006) reports this: "But [PSM spokesman Nadeem] Muaddi declined to condemn suicide bombings, saying that it would not be right 'to criticize Palestinians for taking part in violence when the Israeli forces are taking part in violence.'"
Safe House Assistance to Terrorists and Interference with Law Enforcement
(1) http://home.comcast.net/~jat.action/ISM_info.htm "Susan Barclay, the ISM organizer deported by Israel after she hid Islamic Jihad terrorist Shadi Sukiya in the ISM office in Jenin, told the Seattle Post Intelligencer that, "she knowingly worked with representatives from Hamas and Islamic Jihad— terrorist groups that sponsor suicide bombings and exist, according to their charters, to demolish the Jewish state entirely." (Seattle Post Intelligencer, Thursday March 20, 2003, "Activist's death focuses spotlight on Mideast struggle," By Sam Skolnik, Seattle Post-Intelligencer reporter.)
(2) http://israelbehindthenews.com/Archives/Jul-04-03.htm#agitate
"Days before a British suicide bomber detonated an explosives belt in Mike's Place, a bar in suburban Tel Aviv, the bomber and an associate took tea with members of the International Solidarity Movement (ISM), a pro-Palestinian group that promotes non-violent resistance to Israeli occupation."
(3) http://home.comcast.net/~jat.action/ISM_info.htm "The immediate goal of the ISM is to hamper the ability of the IDF to prevent terrorist attacks on civilians." "The ISM sees itself as working in tandem with the terrorist organizations: Hamas, Islamic Jihad, and Al Aksa Martyrs Brigade. Those organizations use violent means, while the ISM undertakes such aggressive non-violent actions as blocking the progress of Israeli soldiers on their way to arrest terrorists. The intention of the ISM in these actions is to protect terrorists from interference by the IDF."
o Hamas is a Foreign Terrorist Organization (FTO) as defined by the U.S. State Department.
Solicitation to bomb Hadassah Hospital and kill Prime Minister Sharon's visitors
This was seen on a Yahoo discussion board. The individual not only asks for a "martyr" to bomb Ariel Sharon's visitors, he gives directions to the Hadassah Hospital along with Sharon's room number. Al-Awda ("Right of Return") is an ISM/PSM affiliate organization.

Suicide-Bomber
Dear Abou el Fidda' ,
If you are next Martyr on the waiting list
get started and pack your heavy-stuff ,
kiss the hand of your mother
kiss goodbye you bothers and sisters
kiss the hand of your father
put on that heavy-jacket.......
Take the Express-Bus to Jerusalem-Central
and then take bus Nr. 17 which takes you to Haddasah
then step out at the Bus-Station called the :
"Hospital for War Criminal"
Show you Fake-Press-Card to the Security
and speak with an American-accent
walk slowly and do not attract attention......
Enter the main-Hall and walk straight to the VIP- elevator
tell them Mr. Wolf Blitzer has sent you.....!!
Go up to the seventh floor........
look for the room 714........ (intensive care)
and then slowly but surely hold on to that detonator
under your jacket.......
Once you reach that very-well-guarded-room # 714
stop and turn left.....
you will see a large "VIP-Waiting-Hall"
with the many Dignitaries from many countries
including ,unfortunatly, some Arab-countries......
who came to pay their respect to their dying-Hero.
Show again your fake-Press-Card and start
interviewing those "well-wishers".........
and ask them what made this man a Hero ??
and how come he became a "Man of Peace"
Then , order for yourself a cup of coffee,
sit down , rest and think for a while.......
If by then ,
you are still not convinced by the arguments you have heard
from those well wishers.....
then release that detonator !!
This man under intensive care will anyhow die,
with or without your suicide , my brother ,
your real enemies are
those who have called him a "Hero"
and could not convince you why.

Anti-Semitic hate speech
http://www.standwithus.com/news_post.asp?NPI=85 (and other online sources), "When the Solidarity Movement met at the University of Michigan, delegates chanted 'Kill the Jews.'" The ISM/PSM denies that it chanted "Kill the Jews," apparently because what it actually chanted was "Itbach al yahood" (Arabic for "Kill the Jews"). Per http://www.take-a-pen.org/Campus/Articles/Art01102004.htm
"...At the 2nd PSM Conference at the University of Michigan in October 2002, the audience chanted "Kill the Jews" — "Ittbach al yahood" in Arabic."

In March 2003, Evergreen College student and peace activist Rachel Corrie was killed in an accident with an Israeli bulldozer. Disturbing statements by ISM director George Rishmawi and a Hamas terrorist suggest that ISM/PSM had a motive for wanting Ms. Corrie dead.
(1) http://www.standwithus.com/news_post.asp?NPI=85 "Recently, the Director of the Solidarity Movement, George Rishmawi, explained to the San Francisco Chronicle that the recruitment of American student volunteers is useful to the Palestinian Movement because "if some of these foreign volunteers get shot or even killed, then the international media will sit up and take notice.""
(2) Joseph Smith, who was present when Corrie died and whose highest priority was apparently to take pictures, said "The spirit that she died for is worth a life. This idea of resistance, this spirit of resisting this brutal occupying force, is worth anything. And many, many, many Palestinians give their lives for it all the time. So the life of one international, I feel, is more than worth the spirit of resisting oppression." (http://www.freepalestinecampaign.org/Stranger article.htm, a source friendly to the Palestine Solidarity Movement,)
(3) "'Her [Rachel Corrie's] death serves me more than it served her,' said one activist at a Hamas funeral yesterday. '...Her death will bring more attention than the other 2,000 martyrs.'" Making of a Martyr by Sandra Jordan, Guardian Newspapers (http://www.buzzle.com/editorials/3-22-2003-37821.asp)
(4) ISM/PSM spokesman Nadeem Muaddi asks Christians to face "martyrdom" for the Palestinian cause. July. 30. 2005 "A Call for Christian Martyrdom" by Nadeem Muaddi (http://ramallahonline.com/modules.php?name=News&file=article&sid=2257 and other sources, copy enclosed).
o "Indeed, to become a true martyr, one must contribute equally to
“witnessing in word, witnessing in deed, and exposing oneself to danger,
whatever the cost”. If this “cost” so happens to be death, then one will
have become a martyr. However, to simply kill one's self in a desperate
act of hopelessness does not constitute martyria, but murder – a sin
against God in all three Abrahamic faiths."
o "Bishop Younan faithfully claims that “Martyria is the Via Dolorosa with
resurrection”. If this interpretation of “a theology of martyria” is
correct, then it’s about time more Christians step forward and offer
themselves up as martyrs for a true and just resolution to the
Palestinian Issue."
When challenged to explain what he meant by "martyrs," Mr. Muaddi provided the unlikely example of a firefighter who died while saving a baby from a fire. The word's context in "A Call for Christian Martyrdom" suggests that he means human shields, noting that if the cost of witnessing for the Palestinian cause in word and deed "so happens to be death, then one will have become a martyr." Our opinion is that Rachel Corrie was one such martyr too many.
Promotion of religious intolerance and homophobic and sexist violence
The Palestine Solidarity Committee is lying about opposing racism, sexism, and homophobia. Per http://www.palestinesolidaritymovement.org/pointsofunity.htm
In order for your organization to become part of the PSM, it must agree to all five of the following points:
o End the Israeli occupation of "Palestine"
o Equality under the law for Palestinians living in Israel
o Right of Return for Palestinian refugees
o Opposition to all forms of oppression (Racism, Sexism, Homophobia, etc.)
o Divestment is our tactic of resistance
PSM's actions in support of the Palestinian Authority's agenda, however, send a far different message.
Persecution of Christians (dhimmitude)
A dhimmi or "protected person" is a second-class citizen under militant "Islamic" rule. Contrary to the PSM's lip service to "opposition to all forms of oppression," the Palestinian Authority and Hamas are actively persecuting Christians in areas under Palestinian control.
(1) http://www.cbn.com/cbnnews/news/051219a.asp?option=print Palestinian Christians Face Persecution by Chris Mitchell, Christian Broadcasting Network
"WEST BANK - Two thousand years after the birth of Christ, Christians are leaving the Holy Land in record numbers, and a new report suggests persecution against Palestinian believers is getting worse." "…since Israel withdrew from the Palestinian populated areas of the West Bank and Gaza …[Christians] fear for their own lives, they fear for their own family, they fear for the future of their community."
(2) http://www.chiesa.espressonline.it/dettaglio.jsp?id=44202&eng=y "The general plan of Hamas also includes the imposition of a special tax, called al-jeziya, upon all of the non-Muslim residents in the Palestinian territories. This tax revives the one applied through all of Islamic history to the dhimmi, the second-class Jewish and Christian citizens." "In an interview with Karby Legget, published in the December 23-26 edition of The Wall Street Journal, Masalmeh, the leader of the Hamas contingent at the municipal council of Bethlehem, confirmed: "We in Hamas intend to implement this tax someday. We say it openly – we welcome everyone to Palestine but only if they agree to live under our rules."
(3) International Christian Embassy in Jerusalem (https://www.icej.org/cgi-local/view.cgi?type=commentary&artid=1998/01/01/299773494&mode=): " 'Palestine' is an Islamic state, top Arafat advisor tells pastors concerned about Christian persecution under PA."
o "In recent issues, the ICEJ's Digest has reported on the Palestinian Authority's oppression of Arab Christians in the self-rule areas. (see Tortured for their faith, Aug 1997; The price of conversion, October 1997; PA persecution of Christians, Nov/Dec 1997). Despite noteworthy efforts to end this official campaign of persecution, the PA is unrelenting, particularly in its targeting of Christian converts from Islamic backgrounds." "ARAB Christian Mohammed Bak'r is entering his sixth month in a PA prison for openly proclaiming his faith."
Violent persecution of homosexuals
The following articles— and a Google search for "Palestinian(s)" and "gays" (or "homosexuals") will reveal far more— show that the PSM supports a regime that is actively persecuting and committing violence against gay people in areas under its control. Matters are so bad that gay Palestinians, far from feeling "oppressed" by the "Zionists," are trying to flee to Israel to avoid being imprisoned, tortured, and/or killed.
(1) The Yale Herald (November 2004, http://www.yaleherald.com/article.php?Article=3749) reports, "The Palestinian Authority subsequently arrested Adam three times for his sexual orientation, torturing and humiliating him. It is illegal to be gay in the Palestinian Authority, Eli said, and the police actually employ special undercover agents that seek out gay men, whom the police then torture, kill, or force to work as prostitutes. It is not surprising, Eli said, that he and Adam decided to flee to Israel, the only place where they would not be persecuted for their sexuality."
(2) "Gay Palestinians Suffer under Arafat" (http://www.sodomylaws.org/world/israel/isnews004.htm) says in part, "It is not widely known that, along with its war against Israel, the Palestinian Authority is conducting a vicious campaign against its own homosexual population. The New Republic, in its Aug. 19 issue, exposed hideous human rights violations by the Palestinian Authority, which employs special police squads to capture men who have sex with each other. The lucky ones are forced to stand in sewage water up to their necks or lie in dark cells infested with insects; others are simply starved to death."
(3) Gay Man Criticizes Palestinian Society (Alex Tehranian, Special to The Hoya Friday, October 22, 2004; Page A1, http://www.thehoya.com/news/102204/news6.cfm): "A Palestinian man described the challenges of living as a homosexual in what he deemed an oppressive society last Tuesday in New South. …He said he was unwilling to reveal his last name or hometown for fear of being discovered by the Palestinian Authority."
(4) Palestinian Gays Seek Safety in Israel (http://www.sodomylaws.org/world/israel/isnews005.htm): "For these gay men, life in the seedy parts of central Israel is far better than the virtual death sentences they fled in the West Bank and Gaza Strip." "Torture by Palestinian Authority security services or vigilante attacks by relatives is a fate suffered by countless gays in the West Bank and Gaza Strip, where sodomy carries a jail term of three to 10 years." "Islam prescribes capital punishment for homosexual activity."
Tolerance and promotion of domestic violence and murder
(1) http://www.merip.org/mer/mer206/ruggi.htm "Every year, hundreds of women and girls are murdered in the Middle East by male family members. The honor killing— the execution of a female family member for perceived misuse of her sexuality— is a thorny social and political issue. Palestinian activists campaigning for equality find it difficult to stop the killings altogether. Legitimacy for such murders stems from a complex code of honor ingrained in the consciousness of some sectors of Palestinian society."
(2) http://www.worldnetdaily.com/news/article.asp?ARTICLE_ID=35663
"A Palestinian girl who was raped and impregnated by her two brothers was later murdered by her own mother – even though her daughter was the crime's innocent victim – in another of the disturbingly common, if vastly underreported, instances of "honor killings." The mother will be sentenced in two weeks, but a harsh penalty is not expected."
(3) A Google search on "Palestinian" and "honor killing" will yield far more examples.
Appendix: ISM = PSM
The Palestinian Solidarity Movement's standard defense against citations of the ISM's advocacy and promotion of terrorism is that the two organizations are separate. This appendix provides evidence that they are indeed the same organization.

The Strange Case of Joseph Smith
Who is Joseph Smith?
An ISM “activist” with no job but dual identities tours America
By Lee Kaplan
Information from Jewish Action Task Force

Why Does This Group Have So Many Names?
"The Solidarity Movement is not a legally incorporated entity. It is a
fairly loose association of individuals free to unite, to depart, and to
call themselves by a different name every day. Indeed, it is often to
their advantage to do so because if, as has happened, Charlotte Kates,
the leader of the New Jersey Solidarity Movement, gives a ringing
endorsement of suicide bombing, other branches of the solidarity
movement can say: she does not speak for us."
"...This particular International Solidarity Movement is often called
the Palestinian Solidarity Movement in the United States. Local chapters
have myriad names. Names of groups linked in the "local chapters"
section on the International Solidarity Movement web site, include:
Boston to Palestine, the Palestine Information Project (Seattle), and
the Free Palestine Campaign (Ann Arbor), which has a useful section on
its web site labeled "attacks on the ISM" [Ref. 1]. The section contains
several excellent articles regarding the nature of the ISM and its
activities."
"...The decision to quit the International Solidarity Movement in favor
of Al Awda was taken by New Jersey Solidarity leaders Charlotte Kates
and Summer Sharaf, either because they held more radical views than
other ISM members or because they wanted to express their views more
frankly. The split came over the desire of Kates and Sharaf to invite
Hamas to Solidarity Movement meetings (which the International
Solidarity Movement in Israel in fact already does)..." [Note that Hamas
is a Foreign Terrorist Organization as defined by the U.S. State
Department.]

(1) Common Dreams (http://www.commondreams.org/cgi-bin/print.cgi?file=/headlines02/0519-02.htm) "In the United States, the homegrown Palestinian solidarity movement has had limited political effect so far, acknowledged Adam Shapiro, a movement leader who joined Schurr at the news conference Saturday." But Adam Shapiro is the ISM's leader, isn't he?

==> Florida Palestine Solidarity Network
==> New Orleans Palestine Solidarity
==> Palestine Solidarity Committee/ISM-Seattle
http://www.palestineinformation.org/ism_seattle.htm
"Seattle Palestine Solidarity Committee is the local representative of
the International Solidarity Movement to End the Occupation (ISM), a
Palestinian-led movement which asks internationals to come to the
Occupied Territories and join in nonviolent resistance to the military
occupation." This one says flat-out that "Seattle Palestine Solidarity Committee is the local representative of the International Solidarity Movement" and furthermore that it recruits internationals (like Rachel Corrie, the Evergreen College peace activist who was accidentally killed by a bulldozer while several other ISM/PSM member stood by and, per their own testimony, did nothing to pull her out of the way) to engage in "direct action" against Israeli security forces.
