This Morning, nine bay area activists have locked down in front of the SF Military Recruitment Center in downtown San Francisco on Broadway and Davis. One activist has locked down to the doors of the building and 8 others are locked to him, effectively blocking entrance to the building. Police are at the scene and are talking to the activists right now who are critical of the military's role in seeking out and enlisting American youth in the increasing campaign to invade the Middle East.

Media support is requested from anyone who can get to that location with a video camera relatively soon.

I just got off the phone w/ one of the individuals at the action today, here's the latest word:

Nine individuals were arrested this afternoon after locking down in front of the Army Recruiting Station in San Francisco. They shut down the office and posted a sign declaring it a Peace Recruiting Station, as well as hanging banners from a nearby bridge. I was told that police used pain compliance techniques on some of the protesters to break up the lockdown. The one juvenile arrested has been released from police custody, and the other 8 are being held overnight at 850 Bryant. No word on bail or their exact release time. Exact charges are unclear as well, but it's looking like all will be charged w/ trespass and felony conspiracy, and possible resisting arrest.
Eight of the nine activists who locked down at the military recruitment center at Broadway and Davis in SF are being held overnight at 850 Bryant with $10,000 bail, and at last word are charged with felony conspiracy and (misdemeanor) trespass, and possibly a few may be charged with resisting arrest. The ninth activist, a minor, was released to her parents earlier in the afternoon, and is scheduled to meet with probation on March 7th.

At about 11 AM Friday, 9 activists locked down in front of the front door to the center, one of them was also locked by the neck to the door handles with U-locks. The police arrived almost immediately, and the fire department was later called to begin cutting chains and lock boxes. At about 12, the police began handcuffing and arresting folks. The first 2-3 activists were walked to the police van. Then the police began using pain compliance on the remaining activists, pinching pressure points in at least 2 people's necks and shoulders. Ignoring the witnesses' chants of "SHAME,SHAME!" the arresting officers began roughly pulling the activists apart, kneed an arrestee's ribs, yanked his arms behind his back and held his legs down. He was shoved down onto his stomach, face first onto the sidewalk as they handcuffed him, then dragged him to the police van. One handcuffed arrestee was also paced in the road on his side as a police officer groped/searched him before placing him into the van with the rest. They were then taken to the Vallejo Steet police station where they remained for several hours before being transported to the Sheriff's Department at 850 Bryant around 6:30 or 7 this evening.

No court date for an arraignment has been set yet... It is not yet clear how long they will remain in custody or if charges will be dropped.

To support these activists, get out on MARCH 5th (or before!) and say NO to war!- Walk out, call in sick, lock down, do what you can to STOP THE WAR ON IRAQ!!!

passing on the latest as of 1pm Feb 22:

the 8 activists remaining are being held at 850 bryant and being charged with trespass and felony conspiracy... the felony charges seem to be a tactic used to detain the activists longer.. and hopefully charges won't stick.

Please call the d.a. office @415 553 1741 and demand that all charges be dropped... hopfully the 8
remaining activists will be O.R ed this evening.. although this is not confirmed...

I must say that I am thoroughly impressed with the willingness of people to go to jail to protest all the crazy garbage going on in the world today, but more especially, the way people in SF maintain solidarity and show heavy concern for their friends who have been locked up. Going to jail last sunday from eight and market, I was surprised to find a slough of people waiting for us when we got out. It gives me hope that maybe we have more power and strength than I first initially thought., especially coming here from chicago where "solidarity" is a word to be laughed at mocked.
thanks again, and keep doing what you're all doing.
love, joey

Thank you all who were involved with the prtoest in front of the recruiting station. I recently moved here and am sorrting my way through this madness of possible war. I've been wondering if anyone has been working with the military people to support any of them who don't believe in this war but maybe feel compelled by a sense of duty? The other thing is there any group that is pushing for people to not pay their taxes if war comes around? It seems like the that would be the biggest threat to a government that wants to ignore public sentiment in its own country and world-wide.

I confirmed via phone today that the DA has droped both charges for all of the arrested protestors. Thanks again for everyone's help.

The charges against my daughter, one of the people arrested last Friday have been dropped. I am not sure whether all charges have been dropped against all the activists. She was charged with felony conspiracy and trespass. Thanks to all who called the DA's office.

Needless to say, I am very proud of her actions and of her enduring 34 hours in jail for her convictions.

Shut em down!!

How arrogance, self-centerism and anarchism can prevent a man from analysing realtities in favor of the interests of his own people?
If Bush is not blind for sure he is stupid!!! Blindness to biggest demonstrations, contorversies, peace seeking, anger over the war and peace demanded by people around the globe. Bush is a man who promises the heavenly land where in his home land orders arrest of people for taking intitiatives to stop a non-sense war. Didn't Satlin have the same approach?
Didn't Hitler ignored the masses arounfd the world?

Hitler claimed the dignity of his nation over his stupid "insane nationalism". In contrast Bush is selling it in the cheap world of politics over the policies of Israel!!! This is an irony of history to say that Hitler was more nationalist for Germany that Bush is today for America!! Turks saying "Yankees" go home, Germans, Greeks, French and etc around the world.
while Bush is trying to buydown some votes from the most barbaric regimes around the world who treat their own citizens like subhuman.

Where are we heading? New "world of democracy" under Bushism??

Those who do not know are stupid and whose who knowingly admire Bush are trators. It is the task of every journalist, writer to disclose Bush's machine war and domination of war under the pretext of democracy.

Of all 34 countries around the world which posses weapons of mass destruction, Bush is only interested in disarming Iraq!!!

Bush's frantic and fabricated stories are no longer interesting. Masses of poeple around the world have found a new way of paving the way to democracy.
A new way without the hegemony of Bushism !!!

Shame on Bush

Now it's time to slap the cops with false arrest and assault lawsuits, and the city and county with unlawful imprisonment lawsuits.

I just wanted to say something.

Where are all you peace protestors when innocent millions are being cleansed from this world? Where were the protests during Rwanda? During the cleansing of Kosovo?

Compliments of Anti war sentiment and "War is not the answer" people like you kept the Allies from declaring war on Germany in the 30's. Compliments of you people, Six Million Jews were allowed to be exterminated.

Where were you peace activists asking the Al Quaida not to blow up the World Trade Centers?
War is not good, but at times neccessary. Have any of you written hussein lately and asked him to stop using Chemicals on the Kurds? Or how about asking him to stop the use of Rape teams to brutalize women or Iraq?

The fact is the anti war activist is in full and total support of preserving dictatorships and horrendous governments.

Anti war activists have the following blood on their hands.

55 million dead in WWII because they wouldn't let the Allies intervene at a time when Germany could easily have been stopped.

1 Million + dead in Rwanda because "war was not the answer" to stopping the genocide.

60,000 Kurdish civilians dead because the US didn't finish its job in the gulf war and left Hussein in power. YOU let him use those chemical weapons on his people.

Thousands dead in Kosovo because you put so much pressure on the UN not to intervene in the ethnic cleansing.

Remember this children. Peace and appeasement may save a few civilian casualties in the short term, but by doing so, you are giving an oppressive regime more time to arm and begin exterminating the Unwanteds from its country.

Keep this in mind as you oppose the removal of Hussein in the upcoming war. Remember, people also protested the war against the Third Reich in WWII. I think you're no different.

Speaking as an anti-war protester I can say only what I myself believe, my views are biased. I do not speak for every anti-war protester but I know that I do not support genocide on any continent for any reason. As far as the war on Iraq goes, we are left with a black or white, as our ignoant leader says, "Your either with us or against us". I do know that many if not most protesters do agree that Sadaam should be overthrown, but we do not agree with the U.S. war on innocent civilians, killing the very people they claim they are liberating. As for the comment that was made regarding the anti-war movement supporting past genocide and ethnic cleansing I can only let out a deep sigh. We are living in dangerous times, the U.S. government is becoming stronger and more powerful, at the same time more people worldwide are waking up. Globalization is spreading, and corporations are profiting, but ideas are also spreading. Radical, revolutionary ideas of equality and self determination. The idea that we are all one people, we are all one human race, and that no one should be subjugated or dehumanized to make a profit. We are seeing larger peace coalitions forming on a world wide scale. It would have been great if we had the power and the numbers to stop past injustices. But I ask all you patriots, supporters of this "great" nation, have you ever considered the cost of your desires? Have you ever considered the blood that is shed worldwide so we can have our sneakers, our cars, our clothing etc. America the blood is on your hands. We are seeing manifest destiny shift into over drive. We are being led to war after war after war. America won't stop until it has complete world domination. This country was founded on profit over human lives. It started with American Indians, African Slaves, and in later centuries other minorities. In the late 1800's manifest destiny spread to the Philippines and spread from there. I can go on and on, but I just hope that we will learn to question what we have been told. We are not given the truth, if we really believe in freedom and democracy, if we believe in the US constituion then we should seek the truth and not let it be dismantled by the patriot act and other acts which are destroying are civil liberities.
