One Anti-War Protester Still Held

by Mahtin
Mary Bull still held by SFPD- calls you can make to try to get her out
taken from an email from Starhawk :

"Mary Bull, indefatigable Boycott the Gap organizer and Pagan cluster member, was arrested this morning at Chevron in the course of our GREAT action against the war in Iraq, in which a river of blood (cornstarch, food
coloring and water) was spilled across the ground in front of the entrance to the plaza. She is currently charged with felony vandalism. (People are being asked) to call the San Francisco District Attorney's office, Terence Hallinan, at 415-553-1741 and urge him to have the charges dropped. Please remember, when calling, that Hallinan is generally very supportive of activists and civil disobedience, so there's no need to take an antagonistic tone. "

Otherwise, protesters succeeded in blockading both Chevron and Diane Feinstein's office. About thirty people were arrested altogether. The others were charged with trespassing, cited and released.

Mary is a great great person and needs this support!

When I started to say why I was calling the woman said "For Mary Bull?"

They're taking names of people who are calling to register support.

I pointed out that she's done a lot of good work and is a great person.

Please call!

Court Support for Mary Bull

As you know Mary Bull was arrested this morning at Chevron. She is the
only remaining activist from the River of Blood action still in jail.
She has two Felony counts against her now -- Vandalism and Intent (?),
(excessive use of cornstarch!) with bail set at $21,000 She's likely to
be arraigned tomorrow morning at 9:00 am. So let's show support for Mary
by showing up at the County Jail at 850 Bryant St, rm 201 at 9 am. We'll
know more what's happening when we get there based on what's on the docket.

Hearing will be on Friday.

7:00 pm Tuesday

I spoke with Judy Haney, who is waiting with some others at the SF County Sherriff's Department for the release of Mary Bull.
As of mid-afternoon, Mary had been granted bail to be released on OR (own recognizance), but since then another hurdle has been thrown up. As the explanation goes, they are currently holding her in a psychiatric cell (the "rubber room"), and a psychiatric evaluation needs to be done before she can be released, adding another six or so hours to her incarceration. The sense of those trying to achieve her release is that other hurdles may yet be thrown up in order to prolong the ordeal as long as possible through administrative stalling tactics.

This is an outrage. To be charged with two felony counts is illegitimate in the first place, but to be refused release even when bail is provided is breach of due process and cruel and unusual punishment. Mary's attorney was completely unprepared for this bait and switch tactic.

If you know the evening contact numbers of any SF supervisors or other public officials that might have some influence over this vindictive process, you are encouraged to use them. Demand the immediate release of Mary Bull.

The latest on Mary Bull is that the OR officer has certified her for release. According to current appearances she should be out between 9:00 and 11:00 pm this evening.

Correction to the previous comment by me: bail was NOT posted, and Mary is being released on own recognizance.

You'll have to vacate it first.

According to emails I've received from Webb, Starhawk, et al, Mary was released at about 9pm. "She's in good spirits, and is animatedly questioning people about the parts of the action she missed (she was taken away from the scene and put in a van)."

Good news! :

Mary Bull is out of jail, as of about 9:00 this evening. She's in good spirits, and is animatedly questioning people about the parts of the action she missed (she was taken away from the scene and put in a van). She has not slept, and plans to sue for the mistreatment she received while locked up.
