photos of antigay Phelps clan- UC
about 8 members of the extended Phelps church picketed the UC vs. Arizona football game in Berkeley at 12:30 for an hour. They held antiamerican and antihomosexual signs, and one young girl stood on an american flag in the dirt as she held a "thank God for September 11" sign. A large group of football fans, organized gay rights groups, and a few members of the spartacist league stood in counterprotest, laughing most of the time at the zany comments of the Phelps group.
Three of the Phelps group were teenage girls. One wore a Woodstock t-shirt, which wasn't what I would have expected. The youngest one was stationed standing on an american flag. A lot of their signs were very antiamerican, saying, for instance, that god sent the sniper, god sent the 9-11 attacks, god hates america. A number of fraternity members stood in counterprotest with signs mocking their such as "god hates Stanfurd!". One was asking the 15 and 17 year old girls if they plan to go to college, and they were a bit reticent but declared "I'm in the top 10% of my class, and I'm going to college", and a woman who seemed like their mother who was the loudest of the bunch said that colleges breed sin. She singled out the guy who had asked the questions, always referring to men in the crowd as women and using feminine pronouns, and was saying that he was guilty of "judging others" and that he couldn't follow a logical train of thought, and that he need simply refer to the tale of lot's wife in the bible who apparently was struck down for showing empathy to others. She also said that gays caused the holocaust. The third reich was the work of homosexual deviants.
Three other adults in the group seemed to be having a jolly time, laughing and chuckling most of the time, and one even broke into the can-can dance. He started yelling at a loud spartacist continually shouting into a bullhorn "are people standing away from you because of your halitosis?" and he said 'halitosis' over and over.
I was sort of unhappy with a police officer who made a threatening statement "get off the bark area or you will be removed" when I was kneeling taking a photograph from some distance and was clearly not approaching them. Later, lots of photographers and fans were allowed to get close to them and hear their commentary.
