THE SOCIOBIOLOGY OF SOCIOPATHY: AN INTEGRATED EVOLUTIONARY MODEL

Abstract
Sociopaths are "outstanding" members of society in two senses: politically, they command attention because of the inordinate amount of crime they commit, and psychologically, they elicit fascination because most of us cannot fathom the cold, detached way they repeatedly harm and manipulate others.
Proximate explanations from behavior genetics, child development, personality theory, learning theory, and social psychology describe a complex interaction of genetic and physiological risk factors with demographic and micro-environmental variables that predispose a portion of the population to chronic antisocial behavior. Recent evolutionary and game theoretic models have tried to present an ultimate explanation of sociopathy as the expression of a frequency-dependent life history strategy which is selected, in dynamic equilibrium, in response to certain varying environmental circumstances. This target article tries to integrate the proximate, developmental models with the ultimate, evolutionary ones. Two developmentally different etiologies of sociopathy emerge from two different evolutionary mechanisms. Social strategies for minimizing the incidence of sociopathic behavior in modern society should consider the two different etiologies and the factors which contribute to them.

Sociopaths, who comprise only 3-4% of the male population and less than 1% of the female population (Strauss & Lahey 1984, Davison and Neale 1994, Robins, Tipp & Przybeck 1991), are thought to account for approximately 20% of the United States' prison population (Hare 1993) and between 33% and 80% of the population of chronic criminal offenders (Mednick, Kirkegaard-Sorensen, Hutchings, Knop, Rosenberg & Schulsinger 1977, Hare 1980, Harpending & Sobus 1987). Furthermore, whereas the "typical" U.S. burglar is estimated to have committed a median five crimes per year before being apprehended, chronic offenders- those most likely to be sociopaths- report committing upward of fifty crimes per annum and sometimes as many as two or three hundred (Blumstein & Cohen 1987). Collectively, these individuals are thought to account for over 50% of all crimes in the U.S. (Loeber 1982; Mednick, Gabrielli & Hutchings 1987, Hare 1993).

Whether criminal or not, sociopaths typically exhibit what is generally considered to be irresponsible and unreliable behavior; their attributes include egocentrism, an inability to form lasting personal commitments and a marked degree of impulsivity. Underlying a superficial veneer of sociability and charm, sociopaths are characterized by a deficit of the social emotions (love, shame, guilt, empathy, and remorse). On the other hand, they are not intellectually handicapped, and are often able to deceive and manipulate others through elaborate scams and ruses including fraud, bigamy, embezzlement, and other crimes which rely on the trust and cooperation of others. The sociopath is "aware of the discrepancy between his behavior and societal expectations, but he seems to be neither guided by the possibility of such a discrepancy, nor disturbed by its occurrence" (Widom 1976a, p 614). This cold- hearted and selfish approach to human interaction at one time garnered for sociopathy the moniker "moral insanity" (McCord 1983, Davison & Neale 1990).

Sociopaths are also sometimes known as psychopaths or antisocial personalities. Unfortunately, the literature reflects varied uses of these three terms (Hare 1970, Feldman 1977, McCord 1983, Wolf 1987, Eysenck 1987). Some authors use one or another term as a categorical label, as in psychiatric diagnosis or in defining distinct personality "types"; an example is the "antisocial personality" disorder described in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of the American Psychiatric Association (1987). Other authors use the terms to refer to individuals who exhibit, to a large degree, a set of behaviors or personality attributes which are found in a continuous, normal distribution among the population at large; an example of such usage is "sociopathy" as defined by high scores on all three scales of the Eysenck Personality Questionnaire- extraversion, neuroticism, and psychoticism (Eysenck 1977, 1987).

Other authors make a distinction between "simple" and "hostile" (Allen, Lindner, Goldman & Dinitz 1971), or "primary" and "secondary" psychopaths or sociopaths (Fagan & Lira 1980), reserving the term "simple" or "primary" for those individuals characterized by a complete lack of the social emotions; individuals who exhibit antisocial behavior in the absence of this emotional deficit are called "hostile" or "secondary" psychopaths or sociopaths, or even "pseudopsychopaths" (McCord 1983). Other authors also make a typological distinction, using the term "psychopath" to refer to anti-social individuals who are of relatively high intelligence and middle to upper socio-economic status and who express their aberrant behavior in impressive and sometimes socially skilled behavior which may or may not be criminal, such as insider trading on the stock market (e.g. Bartol 1984). These authors reserve the term "sociopath" for those antisocial persons who have relatively low intelligence and social skills or who come from the lower socio- economic stratum and express their antisocial nature in the repeated commission of violent crime or crimes of property.

I will begin by using the single term "sociopath" inclusively. However, by the end of the paper I hope to convince the reader that the distinction between primary and secondary sociopaths is an important one because there are two different etiological paths to sociopathy, with differing implications for prevention and treatment.

My basic premise is that sociopaths are designed for the successful execution of social deception and that they are the product of evolutionary pressures which, through a complex interaction of environmental and genetic factors, lead some individuals to pursue a life history strategy of manipulative and predatory social interactions. On the basis of game theoretic models this strategy is to be expected in the population at relatively low frequencies in a demographic pattern consistent with what we see in contemporary societies. It is also expected to appear preferentially under certain social, environmental, and developmental circumstances which I hope to delineate.

In an effort to present an integrated model, I will use a variety of arguments and data from the literature in sociobiology, game theory, behavior genetics, child psychology, personality theory, learning theory, and social psychology. I will argue that: (1) there is a genetic predisposition underlying sociopathy which is normally distributed in the population; (2) as the result of selection to fill a small, frequency-dependent, evolutionary niche, a small, fixed percentage of individuals- those at the extreme of this continuum- will be deemed "morally insane" in any culture; (3) a variable percentage of individuals who are less extreme on the continuum will sometimes, in response to environmental conditions during their early development, pursue a life-history strategy that is similar to that of their "morally insane" colleagues; and (4) a subclinical manifestation of this underlying genetic continuum is evident in many of us, becoming apparent only at those times when immediate environmental circumstances make an antisocial strategy more profitable than a prosocial one.

... textbook example of a professional psychopath in action...

an old heavyset man, an old general, simply going for a walk in the park, a simple walk amongst the crowds, to listen to the birds...

... 2 years ago, when ariel sharon, surrounded by body guards and soldiers, marched on an islamic holy site in jerusalem, and provoked another intifadah. this calculated provocation ended the last period of peace between israel and palestine, and brought sharon to power.

i will never forget the images of this, knowing it would start another whirlwind. what was he thinking, for f*cks sake what was he thinking...

hollywood makes them out to be "psycho's". insane, crazy, out of control killers and rapists...

but that's 1 percent. most, might as well say all, are polite, clean, well dressed, talented and incredibly intelligent...

... but they have no empathy. none. they calculate and hurt and lie and cheat because they cannot feel the pain they cause in others...

...perfect characteristics for leaders, generals, and executives in today's fast paced, modern world...

Glibness/Superficial Charm
Language can be used without effort by them to confuse and convince their audience. Captivating storytellers that exude self-confidence, they can spin a web that intrigues others. Since they are persuasive, they have the capacity to destroy their critics verbally or emotionally.

Manipulative and Conning
They never recognize the rights of others and see their self-serving behaviors permissible. They appear to be charming, yet are covertly hostile and domineering, seeing their victim as merely an instrument to be used. He dominates and humiliates his victims.

Grandiose Sense of Self
Feels entitled to certain things as "his right." Craves adulation and attendance. Must be the center of attention with his own fantasies as the "spokesman for God," "enlightened," "leader of humankind," etc. Creates an us-versus-them mentality

Pathological Lying
Has no problem lying coolly and easily and it is almost impossible for them to be truthful on a consistent basis. Can create, and get caught up in, a complex belief about their own powers and abilities. Extremely convincing and able to pass lie detector tests.

Lack of Remorse, Shame or Guilt
A deep seated rage, which is split off and repressed, is at his core. Does not see others around him as people, but only as targets and opportunities. Instead of friends, they have victims and accomplices who end up as victims. The end always justifies the means and they let nothing stand in their way.

Shallow Emotions
When they show what seems to be warmth, joy, love and compassion it is more feigned than experienced and serves an ulterior motive. Outraged by insignificant matters, yet remaining unmoved and cold by what would upset a normal person. Since he is not genuine, neither are his promises.

Incapacity for Love
While He talks about "God's love" he is unable to give or receive it. Since he does not believe in the geniuses of his followers' love, he is very harsh in testing it from his devotees and expects them to feel guilt for their failings. Expects unconditional surrender.

Need for Stimulation
Living on the edge, yet testing the beliefs of their followers with bizarre rules, punishments and behaviors. Verbal outbursts and physical punishments are normal.

Callousness/Lack of Empathy
Unable to emphasize with the pain of their victims, having only contempt for others' feelings of distress and readily taking advantage of them. Their skills are used to exploit, abuse and exert power. Since the follower cannot believe their leader would callously hurt them, they rationalize his behavior as necessary for their ( or the group's) own "good" and deny the abuse. When devotees become aware of the exploitation it feels like a "spiritual rape" to them.

Poor Behavioral Controls/Impulsive Nature
Rage and abuse, alternating with small expressions of love and approval produce an addictive cycle for abuser and abused, as well as creating hopelessness in the victim. Believes he is all-powerful, all-knowing, entitled to every wish, no sense of personal boundaries, no concern for his impact on others. His followers only see him as near perfect.

Early Behavior Problems/Juvenile Delinquency
Usually has a history of behavioral and academic difficulties, yet "gets by" by conning others. Problems in making and keeping friends; aberrant behaviors such as cruelty to people or animals, stealing, etc.

Irresponsibility/Unreliability
Not concerning about wrecking others' lives and dreams. Oblivious or indifferent to the devastation they cause. Does not accept blame themselves, but blame their followers or others outside their group. Blame reinforces passivity and obedience and produces guilt, shame, terror and conformity in the followers.

Promiscuous Sexual Behavior/Infidelity
Totalist leaders frequently practice promiscuity, child sexual abuse, rape and sexual acting out of all sorts. This is usually kept hidden from all but the inner circle. Stringent sexual control of their followers, such as forced breakups and divorces, removal of children from parents, rules for dating, etc.

Lack of Realistic Life Plan/Parasitic Lifestyle
Tends to move around a lot or makes all encompassing promises for the future. Many groups claim as their goal world-domination or other utopian promises. Great contrast between the leader's opulent lifestyle and the followers' impoverishment. Support by gifts and donations from his followers who are pressured to give through fear and guilt. Highly sensitive to their own pain and health.

Criminal or Entrepreneurial Versatility
Changes their image and that of the group as needed to avoid prosecution and to increase income and to recruit a range of members. Is able to adapt or relocate as needed to preserve the group. Can resurface later with a new name, a new front group and a new twist on the scam.

don't mean to sound obsessed, but i know some of this from personal experience. here's what i'm familiar with:

>Glibness/Superficial Charm

>Manipulative and Conning

>Grandiose Sense of Self

>Pathological Lying

>Shallow Emotions

>Callousness/Lack of Empathy

>Lack of Realistic Life Plan/Parasitic Lifestyle

what clued me in that something wasn't right about this person was this person's detached, expressionless, flat demeanor. this person foolishly risked life and limb at one point, survived, and was as flat and expressionless after as this person was before. eerie! there's cool under fire, and then there's creepy dead cold.

the other things that raised some flags was a grandiose sense of self and the callousness. the person thought of himself as perfect, and stated it many times. no joke, no sarcasm. this person truly believed. the callousness with which this person schemed was amazing. so callous, this person got busted. thought himself perfect. thought we were all stupid and didn't know what was up. said sorry in the same phoney, eerie, emotionless, detached way.

there's definitely plenty of total assholes in the world. this is just opinion based on experience, but the difference between your typical a-hole and someone who is a psycho/sociopath is that a-holes don't make the hair on the back of your neck stand up, and don't use their supreme intelligence as weaponry to purposely hurt or con others.

can't blame this person too much. fucked up mommies and daddies make psychopaths. they're made, not born.

still, big daddy ariel sharon takes the cake. so harmless and friendly looking, yet so cold blooded underneath...

please review:

"...perfect characteristics for leaders, generals, and executives in today's fast paced, modern world..."

it's not a political statement. ALL leaders...

conning people out of money, callously destroying friendships, lying with ease, these are all evil in their own way.

but to scheme to hurt people and start fights in which people ON BOTH SIDES DIE, die as they had not been BEFORE his appearence, for the calculated purpose of gaining power, is something else. is cold blooded, calculating evil. so you want to tell me that even if ariel sharon HADN'T walked accross al-haram ash-sharif with all those soldiers, the intifadah would have started that very day anyway? gimme a fuckin' break. please.

ariel wanted it. he schemed. he knew the reaction it would generate. and he got it. it was brilliant. absolutely brilliant. callously brilliant even. suspiciously brilliant. brilliant except for the fact that many people have died since that very day. but pain and hurt is not something a psychopath notices in others or considers as he plans. areil had more "important" things to consider. this is psychopathy to the core.

you can play the game trying to say that muslims and palestinians should have pretended to not notice. i agree they would have gained the upper hand.

but then what about the moral purity of one mr. ariel sharon? does the person who provokes win that battle too? is the person who provokes innocent, with clean hands?

i agree, ariel broke no laws. he knew he broke no laws. here again we see the intelligence of the psychopath. but ariel also knew how much he was hated. he knew what would happen with his mere "innocent" appearence. is knowledge guilt?

so ariel did everything legal and broke no rules, and wins in the courts. but what about morality? how's he doing in that regard? is he respectable? or is he a scoundrel? a creep? a cold blooded man? a professional psychopath? is evil simply a matter of legality? are criminals only those sentenced? only those who do the act?

you have a strong argument. but be that as it may, i fail to see how what ariel did that day is "less" wrong than what palestinian militant's have done since that day. i fail to see why ariel's hands have no blood on them. i can't seperate what ariel did from the palestinians, and what the palestinians did from ariel. ariel didn't have to march accross that holy site. but he did anyway. and, sure, of course the palestinians should have shrugged it off. but they didn't.

evil is evil.
